I was gonna post this in the Kinect/Natal thread that just started, but I somehow got on a rant on E3 as a whole, so here you go. Kind of random long-winded rant, but eh why not.

The press conferences definitely got progressively less crappy as they went this year. Microsoft's was an overall "meh" for me, nothing terribly groundbreaking, even though I'll be looking forward to the (already announced) Gears & Halo sequels. Plus a nitpicky thing for me, every one of those business reps practically screamed "IM A TOOL IM A TOOL" as they talked, and looked like they were faking it the most time. I just hate that in general.

Nintendo just announced a bunch of awesome, and everyone looked pretty excited about what they were doing. I could tell everyone was really excited as they were all CHECK THIS SHIT OUT. WE GOT SOME 3D IN YOUR DS. Plus that 3DS ad was quite excellent. All this new motion control stuff aside, I'm really excited for a new 2D Donkey Kong Country, and Metroid Other M looks like it can stay faithful to one of my favorite franchises :D

Sony's conference was just a lot of fun. The "Move" games announced actually looked like full games I'd be willing to play rather than Kinect's "tech demos" as I'd like to call them. Also you just gotta love the guy they've hired to do their marketing and commercials. His nonsense speech was just awesome. Also, the new Twisted Metal looks shiny and fun as always. Also Portal 2 on the PS3 has exclusive features? Kind of a dick move for Valve to develop exclusively for the 360 console-wise, then go and make an exclusivity deal with Sony. At least I have more confidence in Sony to actually stick with Valve's policy of free DLC. Sony's new paid PSN membership doesn't sound bad either. Basically an online discount card, while non-payers still get the same features PSN has always had.

By the way, does anyone truly get excited by the same-old same-old Call of Duty shooters and its clones that are coming out lately? Even Halo picked up some CoD elements in it's multiplayer. What happened to innovation? Kinect and its avatar games scream Wii Sports (One of the games is even called "Kinect Sports"), and Playstation Move is a blatant Wiimote ripoff. At least Sony had some truly interesting games to show off, plus Move support for games that can also be played with a conventional controller.

Just a general summary, I've got plenty of specific games I'm excited for and now want a 360 Slim/PS3/Wii/and 3DS. Still too broke though :P

My thoughts.

Kinect completely failed to impress me. Even the one game I was looking forward to - the Star Wars Lightsaber one - looked pathetic.

Xbox 360 remodel looks nice and I might just pick one up. Improved air-flow and in-the-box WiFi are things I've been waiting to see.

The 3DS is looking really solid. In fact, the winner of this E3 definitely goes to Nintendo. Not much on the Wii I'm interested in, but it didn't seem weak. The 3DS, though - wow.

Sony gets the award for biggest bombshell, though. Steam on PS3? I think this could be the start of something beautiful. I'm very glad to see Gabe turn around, and if we start seeing Steam games on the PS3... I might not need one of those fancy new 360s after all.

my thoughts.....

microsoft killed it

nintendo killed it

sony....i actually felt bad lol...

to me, they already copied alot of xbox360's things, now when others are done with controller-less gaming...they bust out with their copy of wii motion sticks lol
its like they cant go and do something original anymore.

in my heart, sony died after ps2.   ps and ps2 were amazing machines, awesome games, no one else came close.....then all downhill after that :(

Video games have ruined my life.....good thing i have 2 more lives :D

Really, you think Microsoft killed?

Microsoft's Kinect presentation and the games themselves felt so much like the early E3 presentations and games for the Wii, it was painful to watch. I was watching history repeat itself that day.

  • ...and that's the bottom line
It's funny how Sony and Microsoft both have their version of Wii Sports and sell it as innovation and their own idea :)

Microsoft:
The Kinect "software" looks ok, but they are not selling it to me with that. But I'm quite exited both about Move and Kinect and what third party developers can do with it. I liked how they were able to browse the Xbox' interface with thier voice but that's more of a cool gimmick than anything else. Metal Gear Solid Rizing looked pretty good though, but that's not an exclusive. I loved Dance Central :) If they are going for party games with Kinect, this is the direction they should go. Kinect Adventure or what it was called looked like fun, but they should stop there before they go down the same mini game shovel ware route that Nintendo took. They really need some games for non-casual players, or as they call it nowadays core gamers. Give away a few hundred new slim Xboxes was a nice move. I like the new model, but I already have 2 Elites. So unless the new slim model doesn't have SIGNIFICANT changes in heat-  and noise reduction I'll pass. I don't need a bigger HDD (I have 120gig at the moment, a truckload of retail and arcade games, Rock Band and other DLC and 2 or 3 most played games installed and Im still at 70gigs of free space) and I certainly don't need Wi-Fi. I prefer cable. All in all, it was ok.

Sony:
I liked Sony's announcement that the limited edition of Dead Space 2 will have a Move-compatible HD-version of Dead Space Extraction and that not only Resident Evil 5 will be made Move compatible via software update but also Heavy Rain. If Resident Evil 5 "Move Edition" plays anything like Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition control wise that that's enough for me to buy Move. I'm a Resident Evil nut anyway but RE 4 Wii Editon's controls were exellent and porting that experience to RE 5 will be awesome. I loved Heavy Rain but there were some scenes were the controls were a bit awkward (the butterfly trial for the ones who played Heay Rain). Now thinking about a more intuitive control for Heavy Rain gets me quite excited. And these are just the "old" games. Right now it's not much more than a Wii HD but that's good start. Gran Turismo 5 in November was good news as well. In their video of upcoming games they had a Sly Collection, if that's a collection of the PS2 games with HD graphics and maybe added features that'd be cool. Their version of Xbox Live Gold...i don't know yet. If it doesn't take away anything from the unpaid PSN service then why not. Everyone can choose whether it's worth it or not. But I hope they don't give paying customers any unfair advantages in games, like weapons or items that are in any kind exclusive and better than what you can get without paying. I was very surprised about their commitment to the PSP. Didn't see that one coming.
But just as Microsoft, ok but not groundbreaking for now.

Nintendo:
Nintendo is a mixed bag. I think the Zelda presentation (for me personally) was a HUGE let down. It's Zelda, and no matter what it WILL be awesome and I WILL buy it. But what I found rather shocking is that the new Zelda, coming 2011 looks just like Twilight princess, a game from 2007! Don't get me wrong, I didn't buy the Wii for its graphics, but to see them not evolving graphically in the slightest was really, well, shocking. I can't put it another way. The fact that they had technical difficulties during the Zelda showcase, where they wanted to show the Wii Motion + features didn't help either.
Then Mario Sports Mix. What the hell? I guess calling it Wii Sports 3 was too embarassing even for them. I was about to turn off the press conference at that moment and thought I've outgrown Nintendo. But it got better with Epic Mickey, that looked quite good and they totally had me with Kirby's Epic Yarn and the New Donkey Kong Country :) Metroid Other M didn't fully impress me yet. I think of it as Ninja Gaiden meets Metroid, but they showed very little combat and just Morph ball, platforming sequences. I have high hopes but I'm not completely sold.
The new Goldeneye..I don't know. Multiplayer is out of the question for me, at least online multiplayer. So they have to deliver on presentation, and I don't mean graphics. They won't stand a chance agains COD Black Ops and Halo Reach anyway, but if it has a cool story and good production values I'll give it a shot. I'm not the biggest fan of the original Goldeneye so they have to impress me, the nostaliga alone will not draw me in :)
I'm not sure about the 3DS yet, I have to see it with my own eyes to fully understand it. I liked how enthusiastic they were about it and that they are really convinced of it. The new Kid Icarus game looked great. An all new and original(!!!) Metal gear and Resident Evil were awesome announcements, but I have to see the hardware first and experience what it does to me to decide.

At the end of the day, I think Nintendo had the best presentation but they were all close.

The biggest disappointment was no mention of the rumored Ico/ Shadow of the Colossus collection for PS3 yet. THAT would have made my day, Shadow of te Colossus in HD.

It didn't look exactly like TP. Did you not notice the cel shaded effects? It looks like TP and Wind Waker thrown into a blender maybe, but I wouldn't say there was no graphical evolution at all.

yeah most def.  controller=less gaming? (when they actually make awesome games with it)i do agree that the mini games they busted out is lame but i can appreciate they want to appeal to little kids as well...bringing the whole, everyone in the family has something they will like.
the thing i liked the most about kinetcs or however they spell it was the browsing, voice activation, and yeah that dance game looked awesome, plus they showed games that were all 360 exclusives which i liked, compared to most of what sony showed was multiplatform games.
plus the windows 7 phone they showed....being able to play xbox live and get achievements  on it? that pretty much sold it for me lol

for me the sony presentation was like the early nintendo one....they basically were going over how to use wii sticks all over again lol

and nintendo....donkey kong country returns, new zelda, kirby even looked cool, and kid icirus, its like their goin back to their roots and busting out some goodness....i def like that

Video games have ruined my life.....good thing i have 2 more lives :D

Though the tech itself is pretty cool, i feel Microsoft was trying to get Kinect out asap. It felt unpolished to me. Move actually had some interesting things behind it (Heroes on the move, various shooters on a ocnsole that can actually handle them, that Sorcery game, etc). Microsoft had Wii sports. Even the mens were laid out like the Wii's channels. Also I see no point in a controllerless racing game other than pure gimmick. The actual controls have been dumbed down to holding an imaginary wheel, and there's no real way to control speed as far as I can tell. IMO if you want to play a racing game with something other than a controller it better be a freakn wheel.

Dumbed down controls hits the nail right on the head! All they can do with that control are very casual racing games. One of the most basic racing games is Ridge Racer and I doubt they could even pull that off with this control scheme. I HOPE that I'm wrong though, I really do.

One more thing I found very alarming was that they put so much focus on Kinect, having a Kinect showcase with Cirque du Soleil and all, but in the end they don't mention a PRICE! Sony gave us the Move price, which is not too friendly on the wallet but bearable. I fear Kinect will be either around that price or maybe even more expensive.

I imagine Kinect will come in a bundle with the 360 slim in the future, and probably at $400 to compare with sony's bundle. I just wish that they'd give us the subcontroller in the bundle, seeing as it's probably going to be pretty nececary in a lot of games. What annoys me about kinect is that they want to sell these "avatar games" at full price at retail. The Wii sports line was gimmicky, but at least each title was more like a tech demo tha came free with each new product (the console, new controllers, wiimotionplus, etc).

That's one thing where you have to give kudos to Sony. I think they said during their press conference that the suggested retail price for Move games would be $39.99. That's a nice "move" for these otherwise greedy bastards :)

lol i dont think they would get much more for it then that dude.  their selling it for the same price as wii sticks lol.  if they tried selling sticks for more then that, no one would def buy it.

They were saying in a pod cast its estimated to be 150$ for kinects, and packaged in the bundle for 399, so you save 50 bucks if you buy it with the 360.   thats not bad at all

More than the "Wii Sticks". The Move "remote" is $50 and the Move "nunchuk" is $30 - so the set runs you $80, vs the $40 Wii Remote and the $20 Nunchuk for $60.
