So, E3 was full of a bunch of AWESOME surprises. Seems like the game industry this year is growing for the better, but one thing that worries me is the growing introduction of downloadable games. I personally love them, but for an OCD freak like me, it's kind of a double edged sword. I still want hard copies of EVERYTHING I own, just because I trust a hard copy a lot farther than I do a download. (Even though the PSP Go! is oh so tempting)

This site is dedicated towards casing games for shelf use, so what do you guys think?

I'd like something like this too.  Another thing that worries me is indie games; they're all mostly downloadable. I've always craved a hard copy of IWBTG for my collection.

Being a CAG, download only games worry me. Download only means no clearance games, probably no or crappy sales, long download times. :'(

Unless, of course, you manage to get 1,600 MS points for twenty cents...

Not necessarily. Look at Steam - every weekend, they have a deal that you can jump on. Sometimes they are really good too.

Also, take a look at PSN. Just a few weeks ago, you could download Rag Doll Kung Fu for free - If that ain't a deal, I don't know what is.

I look at downloadable games as good and bad. They give up and coming developers a much lower thresh-hold to getting into the gaming business - no worry about packaging, shipping, retail placement, etc. On the other hand, I do like having a physical copy of the game.

The PSP will be getting most of its games through digital distro soon enough. We'll see how it works. I know that they are doing it because UMD is just not working as a format, but I think UMD could have succeeded if they just changed the way it worked. They should have gone with the old PC method of insert game, insert CD Key/other verification method, install game and then play the game without having to lug the UMD around all the time. Keep the option to play the game without installing, but making it so that you don't have to carry UMDs around with you everywhere would make it much more convenient.

No, that happened during school. :'(

I'm worried most about Nintendo, and kinda worried about Microsoft. Steam is awesome. Nintendo has never had a sale on a digital title. Microsoft's sales are generally crappy. If every company were to charge full price for games 100% of the time, then no company would need to have sales. If they all do this, their profits are higher.

I'll never support downloadable stuff.... I dunno it just hasn't got any kind of the same spirit.... I donwloaded MM9 for WiiWare for example and I'm sooooo unhappy that it is kind of non-existent on my shelf.... Besides WiiWare stuff is the only downloadable content I ever used.... Never did XBL nor PSN nor Virtual Console(which I think is the most unnecessary thing out there)....

I will refuse to use a system that ONLY supports downloadable content. The new PSP looks cool and all, but much like everyone else who stated their dislikes of downloads, I like hard copies.

This will also KILL any Play N Trade and Gamestop sales for these games (can't trade in a downloaded game)

There are a few things I have, or would consider for downloading

I downloaded Castle Crashers for myself and my little brother.

If I didn't already have it, Final Fantasy 7 was just released as a download from the PSN store for $10.

But like I said, I like my physical copies. I'm cheap to begin with and I don't like spending money on ANYTHING I can't keep or physically touch.

i personally like hard copies as well ( allthough i do  DL games on my wii and 360, FFVI afteryears anyone ?) but what worries me the most is how fast will people be bootleging on these digital only systems which will hurt the industry even more. i would be bummed out that you wouldnt be able to buy used games anymore  but on the plus side of that gamestop would lose money  ;D.

I agree - i think ALOT of people buy games as they like to have the physical object, nice artwork, something to display, etc - if you take that away, then what's the difference between downloading a game legitimately or hacking/modding your machine and getting it non-legit?

I have the option of playing non-legit on most of my consoles, but still choose to buy stuff because i feel i have purchased something tangible - i don't think i would have that same feeling if i were not getting a physical thing that sits on my shelf.  Inevitably this will ruin the console for me, as i would end up having too many games at once, and not dedicate time to playing anything in particular (i'm already bad like that with legit stuff)

Yeah I'm loving the rerelease of rare games like FFVII for download (still need to get a new PSN card for that...), but I think we should really be offered the option of both. Hell, I don't even mind some form of a 'Collection' disc for a console, as long as I get a hard copy of it. Who wouldn't love to see a Super Mario Bros Collection WiiWare disc? (ok, those have already been rereleased 1,000 times, but you get my point :P)

It's a shame, I want the PSP Go!, but the lack of a UMD slot kind of killed that purchase for me. Unless they start selling games on tiny Read-Only memory sticks, I don't see the reason. I did hear that Sony is giving people a way to transfer all their old games to the PSP Go!, but that probably won't work so well for someone like me who has bought mostly used PSP games. But it would be great to buy a hard copy of a game and also have it marked as available for download. Something like Patapon 2, where the retail game comes with a download voucher, except it comes with a UMD as well :P

Steam is an excellent service, it's just a shame we'll never see hard copies of some of those games. Digital data can always get lost, some way, somehow.

While I do prefer a hard copy of games at this point, I'm not exactly against downloadable copies of games under the right conditions.

What I would honestly prefer is for all systems to have large enough storage space to accommodate a wealth of downloadable content (the PSP Go! would barely/not have enough space to hold my current PSP game collection, and I don't even need to mention the Wii do I?).

The prices of downloadable games also need to be comparable with 'sale' prices (read: cheap) for current physical copies of games. There also needs to be some sort of buyback/return system in place where say, you have 14 days from your downloadable purchase date to sell back your rights to play said downloaded game for half the price you spent on it.

Or failing that, free demos available for every downloadable game so you can make sure you're getting something you want before you make a purchase you can't return.

We're not quite there yet though. So for now, I tend to purchase downloadable content if it is something I am considerably interested in, is not very expensive (like $10-15 max, not including add-on content for it), and only if there is no physical copy available for it.

If it's a release with both a physical copy and downloadable, then the only way I would purchase the downloadable copy of the game is if the price was much lower than the physical copy, again, like $15 difference or more. Unfortunately, this is very rarely the case.

To make up for not having an actual physical copy I can put on my shelves, take with me to play over at friends' houses to play on their systems or let them borrow the game, etc., I have to really feel like I'm getting something I want for a good deal and getting my money's worth.

That said, I am a pretty big sucker for buying the re-releases of games I may have missed the first time, or my (increasingly rare and expensive) favorites when I feel I am getting my money's worth. FFVII that I can play on PS3 and PSP for $9.99? Yes please.

  • ...and that's the bottom line
Mega Man 9 and Bionic Commando Rearmed are absoluely awesome games and my heart bleeds that there is no possibility for a physical copy of the games. I would pay even more than the price for the download to get it on disc with a case and a nice cover. So I do enjoy downloadable games and will continue to buy them (Battlefield 1943, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, KOF 98 Ultimate Match) but I'd love if they would offer a service to get them on disc.

Had no idea KOF 98 UM was a downloadable. Does it have online multiplayer? PSN needs to step it up if so, considering all we have is a straight port of KOF 99 for the PSX.

Of course, Sony of America has always treated SNK like crap anyway...
