I thought it might be a fun idea to start a monthly thread where people can share and comment on what games they’ve been playing recently. Please try to avoid spoilers for newly released games. I’ll start!

----

I’ve been a fan of first-person puzzle games since 1996. That’s when I got my first computer - a Gateway 2000 with a massive 2GB hard drive. It came bundled with a copy of Myst. I was just a kid, but with great effort I slowly worked my way through that game until it was finished. It took me more than a year, and I fell in love not only with the gameplay, but the story and mythos as well. Sadly, Cyan, Inc. doesn’t make Myst games anymore, so I’m always on the lookout for games that capture a similar spirit.

Which brings me to a month ago, when I picked up The Witness during a PSN sale. Watching the trailer had me mildly interested, but the core puzzle mechanic looked repetitive and didn’t seem terribly engaging. But the price was right, and I decided to give it a shot. So far, I’m very impressed. One thing that stands out immediately is the gorgeous environment. It reminds me of Robin Williams vision of Heaven in the film What Dreams May Come. It’s a bright, technicolor landscape with a lot of variety. Another detail that caught my attention right away was the difficulty level - this game is hard! There are many puzzles I still can’t figure out, and whole sections of island I still don’t understand. I could look up the answers online of course, but so far I’ve stuck with my trusty notebook and pencil, just like I did while playing Myst all those years ago. The storyline is pretty abstract so far, but it only adds to the mystery of the abandoned island on which you’re stranded. I hope the game provides some answers the further I progress, because I’ll definitely be playing The Witness for the foreseeable future.

I’ve been playing a few other games as well, but I already got a little carried away here, so I’ll save that for another post!

Oceanhorn on the Vita. I'm digging it so far. People were telling me that it "has hard puzzles".  Um, I think modern gamers have a very loose understanding of what a puzzle is in an adventure game lol

Speaking of first person puzzle games, I just finished Portal 2 for the first time last night.  Fantastic game and a great improvement on the original.  Playing this has made me want to go through the Half Life games, which I plan to do next.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Resident Evil Revelations Xbox One re-release.  I haven't played this since the original 3ds launch.  It's a pretty nice upgrade.

Sudoku on my computer if you call that playing instead of just puzzle solving.

Next I'll play Lego Dimensions when next (last?) wave comes out in 2 weeks.
After that SNES mini probably.

I loved the Portal games. If you're able, get together with someone else and play through the multiplayer levels. I think they're even better then the single player puzzles. If you hadn't heard, a former Valve employee and writer of the Half-Life games leaked the plot outline for Episode 3 the other day. Give it a read once you're done with your play through for a little closure. And check out Black Mesa too! It's an excellent fan-made remake of the original Half-Life that is incredibly well done.

Thanks awesome. Are the battle.net servers still online? I tried playing again many years ago and the place was overrun with hackers and cheats. Is it any better today?

Diablo II. I am always playing Diablo II.

I just played through Diablo I and II earlier this year.  Was working up to finally playing Diablo III but still haven't got around to it...

I'm currently playing Persona 5 and Sonic Mania.  P5 is a lot of fun but man there is a TON of dialog. I'm currently stuck on the Oil Ocean level in Sonic Mania lol.

I also picked up Sonic Mania recently (for the PS4), but after zipping through to the weird newspaper level I think I want to buy it again for the Switch. That game is amazing. You can really see all the S.A.G.E. influence over the years shining through.

But right now I'm making myself go back and finish LoZ: Twilight Princess HD so I can save my character data to my Wolf Link Amiibo for use in Breath of the Wild. I just got a Switch recently and I'm reallu looking forward to starting BotW over again on it (picked up the Special Edition box ages ago, haha).

I've picked up Sonic Mania as well and it might be one of my favorite games ever. The music is awesome, the gameplay is spot on, and the animation is fantastic. At this point I may have more hours on this game than I do on Zelda BOTW.
To be this good it takes AGES!
