Sony is getting the best marketing they could ask for and it's totally for free. They have a huge chance right here to show off something good in E3 and reel in a lot of disgruntled people into their corner, that is, if their approach to DRM isn't as overblown as Microsoft's. If it's more or less the same many people will be hugely disappointed.

One thing I think is funny though is that Microsoft finally put a Blu-ray drive into their console. So wouldn't Sony make a cut from every XBOne console/game sold?

Blu-ray isn't Sony's invention per-se. It was invented by a group of companies called the Blu-ray Disc association which comprises of 19 companies including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, Intel, Sony and Sharp. The association gets the money, and that money is dived up between the 19 companies...so if Sony made money on every Xbox One sold, it would be very small.

They do?!  Microsoft and Sony are both giants. They can both throw a LOT of money into marketing, and both have and will continue to, I'm sure.

That said, I severely doubt that either is trying to pay off developers. That's like mob mentality right there, not to mention how much potential that has to hurt the developers and publishers in the long run. Sounds like schoolyard rumor to me.

IT actually sounds very possible if you ask me devs being payed off to not show there games for one day, that wont come out for a year or So! they will have many chances to show there new games, but that one chance to get payed a lump sum, We already know microsoft is suffering a ton of bad press! and have been muting comments, flaging negitive comments and dissabling comments all together on youtube and other such sites, and one of there latest pr stunts while trying explain the DRM seemed to try and push blame on the devs, and publishers! so we know microsoft is not to good to play dirty! its also been confimed that microsoft has highered people to down vote negitive comments, upvote possitive ones, and post positive ones on sites such as blip! so I dont see how its not believable that microsoft would do this!!!

it's not a bad move - they're investing a billion dollars into exclusives for this machine noone wants right now, and they will also be paying for multiplats to be advertised only for their platform. even if they're still multiplats. smart if you ask me, games are what'll be the deciding factor in the end. also keeping my fingers crossed sony doesn't squander this head start by announcing any shit that'll be likened to what microsoft is doing.

I can't see too many non sequels doing all that great if they go this used game/DRM route. I personally think about Mass Effect.  My favorite game series.  Ever.  However, I sure as hell didn't buy it in 2007 (a 24 year old with no money) without playing it first.  Once I rented it, I was hooked and have spent hundreds of dollars on the franchise since.  If the only way to play the game was spend $60 outright, i doubt I'd have played it until it went dirt cheap.  hence those hundreds of dollars would have gone somewhere else.  And I can't be alone, so those hundreds (across thousands of gamers) could very well turn to millions.

Ok, I have this hypothesis. What if Microsoft made the Xbox One to fail. They know gamers won't stand for their douche buggery. What if...Microsoft is banking on the Xbox one to fail, just to reintroduce the Xbox 360 as the "Xbox Classic" as a budget system?

I know its crazy, but Coke did it and it worked.

Coke and consoles are totally different. I don't think they would invest all of this money into a new system, marketing for the new system, and ruin their reputation so they can sell more 360s. People aren't going to fall back to 360 because the XboxOne is bad, they're going to run to Sony, Nintendo, and PC. The reason they're doing what they're doing is greed. Always online and DRM gives them massive control over anyone that buys into this platform. They are making sure they get their cut of the pie every time someone wants to play an XboxOne game by controlling trading, resell, and rental.

also sony was involved in the DVD as well. So its no different than the small share they got off dvd players and regular xbox / xbox360

So yesterday I was thinking about this in a way that's more personal to me.  My long time girlfriend's brother has Down Syndrome.  He is roughly 30 years old and the absolute sweetest guy I've ever known.  He loves video games probably more than anything else.  Since I've known him he's gone from playing Wii all the time to the 360 a couple years ago.  He has a Game Informer subscription and though he can't read loves looking through the ads every month.  So he always knows when a new game comes out and points it out to his mom.  He plays all sorts of games, but will definitely want anything that involved Batman or James Bond.  Even without reading, his ability to figure out games constantly blows my mind.  His parents are getting older and not particularly tech savvy.  They absolutely do not want him online in any way and I agree with that.  They want him to able to pop a game in and play it.  Simple.  Eventually we'll be in a situation where the new Batman game (or whatever) he sees an ad for will only be available on this next generation of systems.  So yesterday I was reading through this thread and thought of him.  I talked to my girlfriend and explained all of these thoughts and concerns about the Xbox One.  She instantly said, "Well he's not going to have that.  No way."  I certainly hope that for his sake, the PS4 is what I hope it will be from a standpoint of being the opposite of all of this Xbox One nonsense.  I'd be glad to recommend it to his parents if it is and then hopefully everything will be fine.  I suppose that this situation is not dissimilar from a parent who has a very young child who wants the new system.  Being an "all one one media system" that over-complicates just playing games may just leave these people behind.  I am concerned about the long term future of him being able to enjoy what he loves and that's sad.

That's a very legit concern, but it's going to have parental controls, I'm SURE.  Setting it to zero web access shouldn't be an issue I'd imagine, save for the updates that the system will run, but require zero interaction to perform.

You can set 360 so that a profile can't send/receive messages or do voice chat. No reason he can't enjoy multiplayer if you're worried about jerks. I've got a 4 year old who loves gaming and I don't want him associating with the riffraff online.

Perhaps.  His parents are not going to know how to set any of that up or administer it.  I can do that but I'm over there once every couple weeks at best.  He doesn't do multiplayer at all.  Single player and offline is really the best option for him.  It may all turn out to be fine.  We'll see.

Also I'm assuming the voice commands are only going to be optional for the system.  He has speech issues and that wouldn't work.

I shed a tear when it was announced that Dead Rising 3 was a Xbone exclusive.  :'(

I would be excited for DR3, Killer Instinct (not much to go by yet other than the name and little gameplay we saw), and Crimson Dragon (if it wasn't for stupid Kinect) in terms of exclusives for the Xbone from what I saw, I feel asleep half way through their conference.

Ryse looked interesting at first, but ruined it with the QTE kill sequences. Nothing is really exciting me so far.
