Title: Poll-Want N64 Mini Boxes?
Post by: ShoothimNow on April 15, 2010, 07:23:13 PM
If you haven't read yet, read Shenske's N64 Mini Box Replicas (http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=3730.0)

I have talked a little with Shenske and he is wondering if this project is worth doing.  Personally, I love this idea!

Reason being, there is no top label to a Nintendo 64 game, thus having a case solves the problem.  However, there already are UGC covers.  Now the thing is...

For those who don't have UGC's, would you use these Mini Boxes?  Do you like these Mini Boxes?

For those who do have UGC's, are you interested in boxing your collection with a scaled down original cover to the N64 game.  As Shenske stated in his thread, "As custom vertical cases are created, the original cover art is somewhat lost."

Or do you guys think this is a waste of time?

-----

Now I am grateful that Shenske has allowed me to test out his Mini Super Smash Bro's Box and I hope you all like this review.

First of all, I love this idea as I have bought a wide variety of N64 games from Salvation Armies, Garage Sales, Pawn Shops, etc for next to nothing (most of the time $1).  Though I have no way of storage.  I do own the (3) 24-game storage containers, but I still have excess games.  And yes I do have UGC's, but I am currently using them for games that I own manuals to (about 45/100 used).

I Printed This On Letter Sized Card-Stock(Thicker Paper) and its works Perfectly

The size of this custom case is smaller than a PSP (little wider than the screen and no thicker than the system)

Height = Same as a DS Case
Length = Little shorter than a PSP UMD Case
Width = Roughly the same as 1.25 DVD cases

I have shown friends, family, retail stores, and everyone has praised how awesome this case is and if need be, I will continue this project for my own games if Shenske decides not to continue.  This idea to everyone I know and myself, is amazing.  Thank you Shenske for your awesome talent!

Please vote for this on what you think.

These things are freakin' awesome. I plan on printing em out as they come 'cause these loose carts are bugging me and I have no need for 100 UGC's at the moment.

I really love them as an alternative to bulky UGCs. I have all of my n64 titles in a storage drawer made for them, so I hope they fit with the boxes. Really a cool idea!

I use double-width dvd cases to store my games as they are similar dimensions to UGCs, and it's too costly to get UGCs sent to Australia. These mini-boxes would be ideal to stop the games from rattling around in the cases.

Just curious, what's with the two copies of Crisis Core? It's my favorite PSP game, but I don't love it that much ;)

I plan to try this out as soon as I can. I've yet to case any of my cartridge-based games, so I'd feel perfectly comfortable with doing my whole collection this way.

I needed to buy some card-stock paper anyway, so this is right up my alley.

Just to be different, I'd re-purpose the vertical UGC covers for these, though. After all, all my SNES covers were made that way.

Awesome! Can this store the Manuals inside with the game?

I still don't think I'd do this at all, but this image makes me smile.

No, these mini boxes are for the game only.  UGC's do however hold manuals.  These boxes are only for the game itself.

As you can see, this box is mini

First of all, thank you for the praise, I do appreciate it  :)
As I've stated quite a few times, cardstock does work but if you have acess to label paper i would definately recommend using that. The corners of the box are much more flush and sturdier.  Very nice write up ShoothimNow, i think you are generating quite a lot of excitement towards this little project.  FYI - letter size cardstock is not necessary, the entire mini box fits on a normal 8.5 x 11 size paper.

Just giving you guys a heads up, every UGC N64 cover i make i will more than likely make a full-size box and a mini box along with it (as long as i have the resources to do so).  I like giving people the option of how they would like their covers to look as long it is consistant.

I in no way want this idea to replace using UGCs. They are far superior for the time being and in the long run plus much easier to create inserts for. Cardboard simply doesn't last in the long run, I myself am just going to put the miniboxes inside the UGC w/ cover.  That should help keeping the box in good shape and keeping all games in UGC uniform.

Unrelated: @ShoothimNow
I guess you really like my covers  ;D  Also, I've been working off an on for a few months recreating a SuperMarioLand2 cover too  :)

I forgot you were the one that did the unified Pokemon spines for DS. I'm using them and I like them very much :D

I love the idea but I would only print them if the cardboard was of the original size.

I thought of this myself way back when I was scanning all those N64 covers I submitted. I even scanned some of the tabs etc. However, I didn't like the idea of glueing paper onto cardboard and I didn't want to spend a fortune in ink using a straight through inkjet printer so just stuck with the UGC's. Great to see someone else thinking the same way though ....

you dont need to glue the paper, you can find the right Cardstock to print on  or they have full sheets of paper that are like a huge sticker. My work used them to mark Pallets.

When I was considering it I wanted good thick cardboard with a shiny surface to make them look as nice as possible but then obtaining a straight feed printer that can take heavy weight cardboard wasn't easy to locate either.
