This was just announced by hyperkin. A Nintendo 64 clone console with HDMI out. No word yet on a release date, as this seems to be just the Prototype. But it is still cool none-the-less to finally have a Nintendo 64 clone console. Maybe it wil be good, maybe not. But it opens the door for companies like Analog to do one as well. Exciting times.

The article says that there has been no confirmation if it will accept original controllers. However, the ports look exactly the same, and as long as the power supply is good I can't imagine this thing wouldn't support original controllers as well as those fight pads that came out last year. If not, hopefully the hyperkin model controller has a much better thumbstick.
-
Too bad this too seems to be console that emulates the carts, meaning N64 Everdrive will almost certainly not work.
Hope Analoque tips their tow in soon (as well release cheaper NES console and Sega 32-X, and maybe Mega CD).

Have you seen their controller? It’s nasty. NASTY.

Analogue is done with the nes. Don’t expect a plastic one from them.
VERY unlikely that at sega CD or 32x to happen either.
N64 hasn’t been completely cracked yet, which is part of why emulation still sucks, and why the hyperkin clone will be crap. May as well build a raspberry Pi console. It’ll be just about the same thing, sans cart port.
-
It's strange that Analogue never made an NES that was priced in line with their SNES or Genesis, but at least the Retro AVS exists. I would argue that it's on par with the Analogue systems, and therefore, well above the Hyperkin stuff.

Does this thing already exist? If so, I haven't actually seen it. I'm going by what I see in the video, which looks like a generic copy of the original.
See, I actually really can't stand the N64. It's got a handful of great games, but the majority of that system never did anything for me - the problem is it's actually pretty fun to collect for, with all its variants and what not.
And whether or not this is good doesn't really effect me too much. But it IS a step on the right direction. I really like FPGA systems of old hardware, and while the retron stuff isn't the greatest, this kind of stuff is what jump starts a lot of other copies. So my hope is that this thing is good and does well enough to inspire others to do it better. If it flops, people may just say screw it and not go back to this console for another decade.

Probably unfortunately right as CD-drives are less reliable/more expensive than cart connecters.
I guess I'll have to internatiolize my MCD2.
... 32x to happen either.
Yeah probably too nieche to be worth onw console, but maybe they figure how to make it as an add-on.

Again I hope Analogue saves us.

Starting to lean towards this (or maybe bit stronger PC based system. In addition with still collecting carts of course).

One can hope as...

... If I have read correctly Retron AVS is 720P where as Analogue is 1080P.
But on the other hand Retron AVS has front load NES carts (takes less space even tough Famicom carts are top load) and supports Famicom Microphone.

You've pretty much covered it, but each of those systems has advantages and disadvantages over the other. However, either one is about as close to perfect as you are going to get for playing original games on non-original hardware on modern TVs.

I'm all for these types of consoles. Heck, I may even get this one. But I'm not too crazy about the controller. It might feel better than it looks though. I've had that before.
-
Yuck. Hyperkin makes some of the worst clone console device type things. Build quality on these are always garbage.
If they could get the edge connectors to not suck and get them to stop self destructing they'd be worth the asking price. I see these all the time at work and they very frequently have serious issues with them.
::thumbsdown::

I personally don't trust Hyperkin stuff. The first thing that I ever got from them was a SupaBoy years ago that violently fried itself like a week after I got it. The only reason I even own a Retron5 is because I won it in a raffle and, after some preventative maintenance, it's honestly not bad but I won't be intentionally buying anything from them until their quality control goes WAY up.
-
Also have a SupaBoy -- surprisingly enough it's lasted a number of years so far though an annoying 'feature' is that it doesn't tell you when battery is low, the screen just goes all weird on you. Had to google it just to realize that it wasn't actually defective, just was low on battery. ::)
Retron5 is a neat idea but like I previously said, the edge connectors are so poorly manufactured and the power management IC is so shitty that they self destruct at an alarmingly high rate.
Who knows, maybe this time around they'll do it right. But me thinks they're just like AtGames -- they never learn from their mistakes.

Another thing with the retron5 is that it almost always erases save files from your carts >:(
-
Yeah... people get real pissy about that (not surprisingly).
There was a review on Amazon recently for a Sega Genesis Model 1 that someone left a 1 star for because "It couldn't read my save games! But it works fine in my retron!" Like uh, yeah dude, of course it 'works' in your retron5, it creates a ROM dump of your game and a save state.
But yeah, maybe it's a bit too early for my generally cynical attitude toward dumbasses online. 0.0

I've never had that problem. I still use my Retron 5 to this day for any game I want save states for. Although I don't think I ever really bother transferring saves back and forth to the carts. I just use the save files the system has.

Do you ever play the carts in something besides a retron5 AFTER putting them in to a retron5?
That’s how I found out
-
It's also entirely possible that the save state battery is dead. They're getting to be 30 and 40 years old now.
I haven't tried personally, I prefer to run my games on original hardware. Not that I judge anybody for using a retron or similar clone console. I just see so many retron's that have a variety of issues including now power, shitty edge connectors, some won't read one type of cartridge, etc. We've had a few customers at our retail stores that had Retron5's that were brand new out of box take a dump after only a day or two, made us have to deal with Hyperkin directly. They're QC seems to need a bit of tweaking.

Yes. But I dont save. I use the built in save states. One game, for example, Mario RPG. I had a cart save at the end boss. Went back and replayed it in R5 start to finish. 5 mins ago popped the cart into my super nt and the save was there. So I don't use the cart save transfer to Retron feature. That might be where the problem is? I don't know. I also just popped a link to the past in to test it. Didn't do the transfer save, but played it for 10 minutes and then popped it into the Super NT. Save file still there.

None of my cart batteries are old.

I didn’t even know the retron could transfer saves. I just know it’s wiped my save files on a number of carts.

I can second this, and I sometimes use it to transfer saves back and forth when replacing cart batteries. Also, as to the edge connectors thing, I've seen some people say to use a touch of dielectric grease to ease the death grip on the carts. The only one that was tight on my system was the SNES one, but I just bought an old Retron 2 and de-soldered the edge connector from that and swapped my Retron5's SNES edge connector with that. The grip is much less violent, and just feels higher quality? I don't know how to say it, but it's 100% more reliable now. And really, I just use my Retron for big screen Gameboy and Game Gear or to play English patches on my JP games.

Yeah well, not everybody is as fastidious about their carts as you and I are. :) There's a shocking amount of people who don't understand that non-volatile solid-state memory wasn't an attainable thing until recently and that batteries don't last forever. ::)
