Title: April's (Not So) Foolish Pickups 2019
Post by: Megatron on April 01, 2019, 06:43:14 PM
A buddy of mine hooked me up with this for $100...

An Ice Blue N64 CIB with plastic wrap and paperwork.

This thing is beautiful.  I don't know if the controller has been rewrapped or not, but it feels like it was never used.  And the console itself is immaculate.  I can't find a scratch on it or any sign that it was ever played.  The box shows some wear and is a little bent out of shape in the middle, but is otherwise in really good shape for its age.

Never heard of downward spiral. Will have to look into that.

Been itching to get one of these kits for some time now. Just gotta figure out which N64 is going to be treated to it...

SO I ordered these from Gamestop back in February. The tracking numbers they gave me said that USPS was awaiting the arrival of the package and when I contacted gamestop they said the packages got lost in the warehouse and they were going to refund me. I told them not to refund me and that I would wait for them to come back in stock but they said no and refunded me anyways. Then I check my mail today and get a bunch of packages only to find the games that they said got lost. I got these games for free. Thanks gamestop!

This also came in the mail today!

Bit like my first Xbox 360 story.

I got it with financing.
Pay 40 euros when getting the console then 9 other payments of 40 euros next months.
Never recieved the bill for the 9 other payments even when I asked once they just told to wait and it would arrive eventually which it never did.
This console also RRoD 3 times.
First time compensation was 1 month free Xbox Live Gold, second and third time free controller and 12 months free Xbox Live Gold.
Free pick-up and delivery back to home everytime, took less than 2 weeks each time.
So Xbox 360 at day one, two extra wireless controllers (so three total) and two years and one month Xbox Live Gold (+ one year that came originally) for 40 Euros.

Funny side story relating to this:
First time when they where returning the console I got phone call at 6AM that started: Upsista päivää (translation: Oopsie daisy).
I said what (I had slept only an hour and the phone call woke me), answer was again upsista päivää.
I repeated what, and got answer: From UPS delivery company, good day.
Upsista päivää can be translated also: From UPS (good) day.
Turns out the driver knew me (was father of classmate) and he wanted to have little bit fun.

THat's awesome, I've been wanting to pick one of these up, just never pulled the trigger.

Maybe if I could get Youtube revenue from it, but doesn't look like install videos fare very well.

It's a pretty easy install as well, despite them making it sound like it's rocket science.

Even if you suck at soldering? I used to solder mod chips in Japanese and US Dreamcasts to enable playing the other region games. I probably ended up ruining about 50% of them. I'm terrible at soldering.

Yes, it was, especially in light of all the controversy surrounding the use of player images without compensation (which would have been illegal anyway under NCAA rules), despite the fact that they never used their actual names. The NCAA decided not to renew any of their video game agreements after that, IIRC.

Grats on the really really great game. Try to look past the visuals and just enjoy the great story. This game had me shouting at the screen on my first playthrough.
Super excited for you if this is your first time to play it and a bit jelley too.

I went to re-opening (after some renovations during which they were pretty much fully open anyway... ::)) as they had Playstation VR Mega Pack (goggles, camera and 5 downloadable games: VR Worlds, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Skyrim VR, Doom VFR and Wipeout Omega Collection) on sale.
Normal price 350 Euros, now was 250... so I bought 2... ;D

I also found used PAL Bayonetta 2 Limited Edition for Switch cheap from ebay.
All parts present and in great, if not mint, condition altough Bayonetta 1 code is probably used.

I played it at a friends house many many years ago but never got more than a couple hours into it because his save battery went kaput so I never got to the ending.

There's a joke between Me and My Parents, (probably others share it too, we can't be unique...) Where we say if something is really expensive and the ad says, "only XXX pounds!", then one of us will say, "only XXX pounds?, We'll have 2"

Nice pickup by the way, enjoy!

Didn't know where else to post this so I figured it could go here. When I started collecting years ago I never really thought I would have a complete set for any system. Even after I found a inbox 32x at a local store for a great price I didn't think I would end up with all the games for the system. Not long after buying my 32x my sister, who was working at a daycare at the time, told me there was a handful of old Sega games sitting in a closet there and they didn't even have a system. She asked if I would want them and I said sure. I figured it would be the typical common junk games (and it mostly was) but in there was a lone, cart only 32x game - Spider-Man Web of Fire. That was the spark to get me going. I thought since I had the hardest game to get, the rest would be easy! This was roughly 10 years ago and this past weekend, I finally picked up the last game I needed to have a complete cart set: Dion Sanders Stupid Expensive Baseball. Yes, I could have put this together a lot fast but that's not how I collect. A LARGE majority of these games came from local shops. Of course this isn't 100% complete as there are a few games missing manuals, posters, boxes, etc. but I couldn't be happier :D

Wow! That's impressive to see all together like that. I may be wrong, but wasn't there a FIFA game on 32X? Maybe it was PAL only.

Yep!  It's a PAL exclusive but I would like to pick it up at some point.  There was also a Japanese exclusive game too, Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV but I'm not as interested in that one unless someone does a translated version of it some day (would get a repro).

Thanks!  Yep, Star Wars, the golf game, and for some reason Moto Cross are the ones I tend to see... usually all loose carts.

IIRC, Star Wars Arcade was the pack-in game at or near launch. They later included Doom, and I think that even Virtua Fighter was a pack-in for a while. That being the case, it's likely that there are a lot of cart-only copies of those games floating around, as I doubt any of them came in their original retail packaging. Sega had gotten REALLY cheap by then.

Huh, I guess that would explain it then. Makes sense that they'd be pushing Star Wars and DOOM as those titles have name recognition. I never even realized they did pack-ins for the 32X. Was there any difference in the 32X's packaging itself or was it just the same box and was advertised in store that it included the game?

But the issue is that I actually PAY to have the pro account or whatever they call it, and I've already got a TON of images uploaded to the site.  Photobucket gets more busted with every passing year.  I can't even scale it within PB after uploading anymore (their interface is broken).  I have to do it in photoshop BEFORE uploading.

I bought Labo Toy-Con 3 Vehicle Kit, Sonic Forces Bonus Edition and Flashback 25th Anniversary Edition for Switch, Killer Instinct for Xbox One, and Lego Harry Potter collection and Farcry New Dawn Superbloom Edition for Playstation 4 few days ago.

And today I recieved Asian Version of Gyakuten Saiban 123: Naruhodo Selection (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy) which has all three games on 1 cart.

Relating to this: I'll try to be scanning some stuff today or tomorrow as I need some stuff edited in a way that exceeds my skills.

Gotta get the Labo, even though Oscar and I are still building things from kits 2 & 3 :P

Always thought it was funny that a record label (Ghostly International) had exclusivity of a colour for a retro console.

I had a little out of town trip this past weekend as my wife was doing a half marathon so I got to hit up every game store in the area. Found some good stuff too!

Yeah. Somebody at analogue must be pals with someone at Ghostly or something like that.
