Hey guys. I was looking through the Xbox 360 covers and I noticed that nothing has been uploaded since Oct 25 last year. What's going on? Why hasn't any new covers been uploaded...? Not trying to sound whiney, but it seems a rather long pause for what is a very current system.
-
I'm sure Snowcone would let you be an admin if you asked.
-
I should be able to add a few during this weekend.
I have about 5 (from several artists) ready to be added
-
I suppose we shouldn't throw around the admin status too easily....
You know the more admins we are the more chances will be that covers get added which are sub par quality wise!
To the topic:
I suppose there haven'T been added many 360 covers because
1. it is a current gen system and it's much less interesting to preserve covers for games which are new and everyone has a cover anyway....
2. There is always much crap uploaded for current gen systems... I dunno why but people tend to just scan in the 360 covers and uplaod them as final without even bothering to check quality/resolution....
3. There is always the thought in the back of my mind that those covers will be used by software pirates to cover their downloads....
I personally would be all for scrapping the current gen systems and just make our cover site a site for everything except(360,Wii,PS3,DS,PSP) or just custom covers in these sections....
But hey that's just me....
-
Could'nt agree more. A quick scan reveals 360 & Wii to be far more popular than any other systems (including PS3...not been cracked yet). Why would that be? I know not everyone taking them is a pirate (i made one and have D/L one myself) but customs and requests only on current gen systems would be a safer way to go. I think more Admin's may be necessary, membership here is increasing very rapidly.
-
Hey now, I don't pirate games for my 360 but I do buy a lot of used games and used games don't always have their original cases or covers, so let's not be to hasty in removing any thing from the site.
-
I think it's important to preserve these covers while they ARE current gen.
Think of all the pristine covers we would have right now if someone had been preserving say NES or Coleco when they were current gen. I know the technology wasn't there to do it at the time, but all the more reason to take advantage of what we have now.
Also I've been in need of many PS3 covers which i've either downloaded or created - there's no reason that people weren't in a similar situation to me but requiring them for 360 (Although i do agree it's probably more piracy related)
-
Its only an opinion, i dont think that removing next gen stuff will ever happen. I know people have very valid reasons to come looking for next gen covers. As i said, i made a Bioshock for myself and D/L Oblivion, both because i had collectors editions that dont sit well on the shelf. Point taken about the preservation side of it sheep.
-
Well, I would like to become an admin if possible. I know the difference in quality and would like to help the site out as possible. The reason why I want 360 covers is that I buy games from a local shop that places stickers on the inserts themselves. Removing them is NEVER satisfying so I always resort back here to replace them entirely. I'm a fairly cheapass gamer, so i rarely am willing to spend the $60 price for a brand new title, so the majority of my 360 games needs replacing in this manner.
The covers I'm looking for include
Call of Duty 5
Dead Space
Fable II
Fallout 3 [the custom one someone here did]
The same shop does the same thing to other consoles as well, the PS3, PSP, DS and Wii, Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube. I buy them because they're cheaper and thus I have this problem.
-
oh god I hate stores that do that. Biggest pain in the ass. I just bought 8 used xbox games (getting 'em before gamestop stops buying used xbox games) Took me so long to get all the individual stickers off of the cases, then to delicately peel them off the inserts. Seriously whoever thought of that should be kicked in the shins.
-
Ok wow, I'm going to be blunt here, but the argument that we shouldn't host current gen scans because "pirates will use them to cover their downloads" is the biggest bunch of crap that I've ever heard.
In no way does having current gen covers on the site encourage piracy. I don't even see how you made that connection. I can almost guarantee that most people downloading those covers are doing so for the same reason the rest of us are: because we bought a copy used without the case or our own case is damaged and we want a high quality replacement. Not hosting them because they have the potential of being abused is absurd. That would be like banning pencils because they can potentially be used as a deadly weapon.
Also, someone mentioned that the ps3 is behind simply because piracy isn't as easy on it. Here's a news flash: piracy isn't quite as rampant or widespread as it seems. The PS3 is in third place because of its high price point and lack of worthwhile (in the average consumer's eyes) exclusives. I can guarantee that piracy has little do to with it. If that were the case, the Dreamcast might have actually sold systems!
EDIT: One last thing, I don't think it's any of our business what people do with the covers on this site anyhow, regardless of if they're using it to case pirated games or not. I know that TCP is officially against piracy, and I'm fine with not allowing things like say, emulated SNES games getting custom ps2 covers (though I think we should allow covers for unreleased games and repo carts and such, but that's a different story). However, we can't just not allow retail covers in certain section simply because someone MIGHT use it to cover pirated games. If you're going to do that, we might as well not have retail covers at all.
-
I have several 360 covers to upload, but I have yet to get around to it, because I'm lazy, and tend to procrastinate on that kind of thing.
-
I think I'll look into getting a cheap scanner soon, I have 30+ 360 games, I'm pretty sure I have a few covers that aren't on the site, and I need to contribute a bit more round here.
-
Satoshi,
I've made you an admin with the goal of helping us catch up on the current gen stuff. If you have questions, ask me or one of the other admins.
-
Always care about the quality satoshi when uploading stuff!!!!!! Please be as eagle-eyed as you can be and adhere all our standards!!!!
Quality is the most important thing nothing else!!!!

True and for the most part, I agree, I can't count the number of times I have bought used games and not gotten a lable with it (for a CD/DVD game) or box (cartridge games) in the past.
But, please elaborate on this point:
How do you explain the need for a CD/DVD Lable?
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=6146
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?game_id=5643
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?game_id=4213
I mean, those are commercial games with custom/retail lables there. In what situation would someone need those lables for a CD/DVD without pirating the game being involved? I can understand lables for homebrew and ports made by developers online like say, Quake 2 for Xbox and such.
-
Well, in one case, I actually would use disc labels if I had such technology available. Namely, my copy of Star Wars: Battlefront for the PS2 has scratches on the front of it. It doesn't affect the game, but it would be nice to fix as it is pretty unsightly.
Still, I can certainly understand why such a thing would be unnecessary to host. Considering space is always such a precious resource, I'd also say there is no need to have them here when we could have more covers instead.
-
Quadro has mentioned his views on CD/DVD labels in a couple of threads here to date revolving around the idea that the only use for a label is piracy.
Personally, I agree with him.
Printing a cover onto a paper label for the purpose of covering a scratched original disc is almost non-sensical. The issues around disc's not spinning up quickly enough due to the added weight or labels coming off in drives when they heat up & the adhesive lets go are well known .... I ruined a cd-writer that way .... so anyone trying it is courting disaster frankly.
However, as I stated in another post ... why should our preserving original artwork in all it's forms ... be stopped because the POTENTIAL exists for its misuse. That's the same as the idea of banning cars or guns because they can be used to run someone over or shoot them. It's not the tools [in this case disk labels] that is the problem.
In the movie Happy Gilmore a shirt logo on Happy's old boss stated it very well indeed "Guns dont kill people ..... I kill them"
-
I would respond to Quadro, but TheValeman pretty much nailed my response for the most part.
-
Agreed. We aren't pirating games and we aren't advocating it. We are in the pursuit of preserving this content in it's original form in a high resolution form. We make it available to the community free of charge. I scan both insert and disc simply because I can and I'd rather have both while I can still find both.
-
Yeah, too bad no one scans manuals anymore. Although I'll never print 'em out, they're always nice to look at for nostalgia and such. Even though last time I saw a 360 manual, it was like 2 pages. Depends on the game. Just taking 2 original xbox games as exampls: Indigo Prophecy had lyrics for the soundtrack and a bunch of stuff written by the creator telling about his ideas, and the Warriors was this huge full color book with promotional art and information on all the gangs and such.
Plus most used games I get these days are lucky to even have the dvd case intact :P
-
I uploaded some 600 DPI 360 raw scans some of you might be interested in (satoshi_matrix)
Fable 2 Collectors Edition (scanned the outer box too)
Conan
Dynasty Warriors Gundam
Eternal Sonata
Guitar Hero World Tour
Lego Indiana Jones
Mass Effect
Naruto Rise of a Ninja
Naruto the Broken Bond
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Rock Band 2
and Warriors Orochi
(((( I have uploaded these Raws in 600 dpi.))))

I've needed the cd/dvd disc cover a few times. I bought the SE edition of Devil May Cry 3 which I guess only comes in either a greatest hits version (yuck) or in a special pack with the rest of the series. The version I bought 'used' came from the pack (no red band). The disc the gamestop guy gave me however, has a red band at the bottom. I'm still not sure if the SE that comes from pack has a red band on the disc or not. I'm assuming it doesn't but I truly don't know since I haven't seen the disc. ???
All of it is a moot point anyway, I'm going to end up buying the pack. I can't stand that one my games has 'This game came in a pack, not for resale' on the back, while the rest don't. I can reprint the case label, but that doesn't change the red band on the disc.
</rant>
On the point of disc labels-
It's always easier creating custom cases when you have more images to work with, sometimes discs have cleaner logos or art to work from. Pirates shouldn't deter us from uploading anything that could help us.
On another note-
I know I'm kind of (really) new here, with this being my second post and all, but someday I wouldn't mind taking an admin role. I have a B.A. in Animation and a minor in graphic design, so my background fits with the content. Having high-quality content was and is a priority for many of the things I do.

:o Wow.

:o Wow.
Ehehe. I knew I shouldn't have said anything. It's been a long time since I've posted on any sort of forum at all. I forget how people treated newbs. >_<
Either way, I didn't mean to sound demanding or anything of the sort, mostly just wanted to help. =D

Show us your works and dedication for the project by creating covers and being an active member and maybe you'll become an guru/admin sometime in the future.... ;)

Sorry, I meant more "wow, someone who's qualified." Snowcone (site admin) probably won't give you FTP access, but make a few covers and at some point you could probably get in.

Wrong train of thought on my part, sorry about that. I'll go upload a cover to feel better. =D
