Title: Internet type change and speed upgrade
Post by: Arseen on July 30, 2015, 09:42:34 AM
I think I'll finally take the plunge and change my over the phoneline 8/1MB (which speed test tell is pretty accurate = 7.1+/0,7+ almost always) internet over the 4G LTE network 100/50MB internet.

Altough the fine print says that it might vary between 5-80mb download and my friend has achieved 20+ with his phone, but thru modem it should be constant over 60MB, but we'll see...
Price is same as current one, so at least it should be improvement.

The modem has the same 4 ethernet connections as my current modem, but the new one has 4 1GB ones where as the old one had 1 1GB and 3 100MB ones.
Modem also has 2 external antennas and closest 4G LTE tower is about 700 meters away over a pond so connection should be good.

I'll get it early next week latest so I'll let you know the results then.

Fingers crossed.

I want to do something similar here, but for us, the cost of that kind of setup is prohibitive.  I'm hoping that the costs come down within the next few years.  I hate my current internet provider, but I have not other choice for high speed right now.

The prices here are quite good.

The one I'm watching is 20 Euros per month for first year, 30 per month after that... but i think I can get better deal.

Modem is price is 216 Euros but you can divide that to 12, 24 or 36 payments if you want without extra cost.

The problem for us is that 4G LTE is NOT unlimited and the packages with enough data to cover us from going over make the deal cost prohibitive.  But I've been saying for a while now that once that cost comes down I am done with my current provider.

You're lucky!

I pay for up to 20 meg.  Fastest I have ever seen is 7.5 - usually between 4-6.  Often drops below 2!!!!!

We are the furthest point on the line, in the middle of nowhere - no cellphone reception.  Router supplied is garbage, but cant use another, as it also gives our telephone, and some TV services (although we don't use the French TV service, as it's generally just trashy soap operas and bizarre quiz shows.)

Added to that, we have other complications.  We have 4 houses - over winter I ran Ethernet to each of the other 3 houses, to a wireless access point, giving them direct access back to the router.  And as the houses are all stone built, with walls sometimes up to a meter thick, a number of boosters are necessary in our house, as the office is on the top floor, and the router on the ground floor.

Yeah, but at least you've got the view. ;)

Here it's with unlimited data. ;D

Over here, there are a handfull of providers that offer unlimited data, but their service is terrible and reception where I live is nonexistant.  Of course the providers with great reception limit their data.   ::)

The one I'm looking at should have the best coverage in Finland.
or atleast the map shows solid blue (which is their 4G LTE color) cover over my house.
There are few 20 meter or so blank spots 3 kilometers away but those is in the heavily forested swampy and hilly area and nobody lives there.

On side note:

The mobile phone antennas are on their own independent power grid with battery back up here so they don't go out with power for long time.
Longest power outage here was 4 days few years back and mobile network was unaffected.

And I checked that the modem runs on 12 volts so I can easily hook it up to heavy-duty battery so that the internet will not go out even with power outage... combine that with laptop and no internetless times for me anymore!

Yeah without internet I can be for a week or 2 easily as I have plenty of DVDs... Without electricity during summer after few days it gets boring... In the winter day or two goes before it gets dangerous.

I'm full blown atheist who has very harsh opinion about religion and religious... ;)

Well I got the new Internet today... looks promising.

Promised speed was 100/50... currently getting 33/22, but it's sunday afternoon (16:15) and thus 4G is in high usage.
Let's see what it gives during night.

Well this is more promising:

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/4577722354.png) (http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4577722354)

For some reason our house's walls block the upload signal sometimes.
Usually it is around 23.

My brother has the same contract on his mobile phone and he tried it outside and it gave result of 63/28

I ordered external 4G LGE aiming cross-polarisation antenna package (2 antennas that are set-up with 90 degree polarisation angle between them) with additional filters that remove all 2G and 3G signals and 11db boost per antenna.
The package should arrive tomorrow.
Ater installing them my connection should really speed up.

Upgraded to fiber connection.

I chose the 300/300 as it was OK compromise between price and speed.

Run few speed tests and got bing of 15ms, and average speed of 309/301
