Title: Welcome Back!
Post by: Snowcone on March 24, 2015, 09:59:40 AM
My apologies for the extended downtime over the last 36 hours. We had an issue with some malware on an associated site I host that forced our host to take us offline until it could be resolved. That is under control and I'm working to separate this site out so it's not impacted by things of that nature in the future. Welcome back!

thus, our withdrawal symptoms begin to disappear  :o

Look, Arseen, I don't have to bug you with email  ;D

Arseen, since I'm officially sick with a virus, I will spend some free time working on past projects. I will be home for the next five days per the Doctor.

 :P

Thanks for fixing the site, Snowcone!

Well for those who know you also run Snackbar Media/Games it wasn't too hard. Though by the time I had the idea to check there and find you on twitter, I saw someone else had already brought it up :D

Googling "is thecoverproject.net down" yesterday brought up some interesting results, lots of concerned parties out there who don't make themselves known on the forums.

I saw those as well.  I figured I might as well google the problem and see what I can find.

Thank god everything is ok.  ;D ;D ;D

Was the site down?  Hadn't noticed.......not!  I have no finger nails left and I've had the shakes since I woke yesterday morning.  Whew, now I can relax!  ;D

I had confidence that the problem was temporary, but since there was no way to communicate with anyone else, it was a little unnerving.

You had to bring that up huh?  ;)

TCP is an interesting site from a technology perspective. It's plain PHP, but rides on top of SMF for many functions. That means i have a lot of pieces to build to separate from SMF (which needs to happen). THe visual style is a point of contention. I personally hate the design today, which is fair since I designed it. :) I've asked for feedback on many of the early design ideas and they've not been widely liked so here we are. :)

Rest assured, another public mechanism to retrieve the cover data is on my list... I've got the data replicated to another server at the moment.

I think more work needs to be done on the back end for the admin panel, making it easier to add to the database, rather than the user interface.  Sure the current design is a little.....dated, but at least it works, and is intuitive.

Security is a concern though, as a number of regular users have lost accounts over the last months, arseen being the prime example.

I also hate the fact that you have to select a game name when submitting a cover to the site - the old version where you entered the game name as a text string was far mor convenient - I realise this is off topic though, so I'll say no more about it. Lol  ::)

Any thoughts on creating a TCP twitter or FB account or something else where in the event of the site being down like this, there's a way to reassure people easier?

I think that I will download smf and see how it works. I've never used it before. I am an intermediate PHP programmer. I have my development server running but it's currently configured for ASP.net. I am curious about the site now. I'm going to install php, mysql and smf.

Hopefully, some of my opinions will be useful. First, I need to educate myself about smf.
I'll post here later.

Meantime, I designed a logo for the site awhile ago but I'm not sure if anyone is interested in looking at it??

sorry to interrupt the conversation. If anyone wants other opinions, let me know. I'll even post my little logo idea...

Sort of like when you are a little kid at the fair and your family all agrees that if we get lost, we will meet up at one place.  We can do the same thing with a facebok page.  If we get lost (site shut down), we can all meet on facebook. :P

I used to like IRC a lot, it could be a good option, but at the same time, it may steal away lots of forum activity. At least, on IRC, you can see the list of people present even if not participating.

IRC is great, but it's not the best chat for image based things and it would split the site and the conversation. In that case, we'd be better of starting a subreddit and purely hosting content here.

I experienced the same thing.  From what I can tell, the site wasn't technically 'down", just blank.  So it would always take me to a blank white page, and still register as "working"

@ Snowcone:
I've just installed the forum that you had mentioned and it was a quick and easy process. Looks interesting but much different. I'll mess around with it.

Migration on my local server was easy but i'm attached to a particular directory name. id est, if you must have the default directory as tcp.net/forums/ then you would have to perform offline adjustments. Otherwise, it appears to me that you make a new directory (say tcp.net/chocolate/) and the sweet stuff is ready to go  ;D

Looks promising ...

@Arseen
I've installed the newest version of SMF and the glowing text works.  ;D

I'm trying to see if it is possible to lock admin to an ip, as in Wordpress. Security is a big deal these days and spammers are everywhere.
I am still sick, so i need to rest a bit now.
Anyway, I like the new version of SMF better. I'll look at the code a bit more later and think about modifications...

noemann, in the new forum stuff your testing, does it support wiki style-threads? (or at least first posts?)

I'm not clear about wiki style-threads. Keep in mind that anything is possible with programming. So, essentially, it can be done. I'd have to know exactly what you are thinking here. Currently, I'm just taking all that i see and know and upgrading it. Nothing has changed except appearance and upgrades to what is already TCP.

I'm just offering my experience and skills to help Snowcone with TCP. Snowcone is the owner. I haven't discussed functionality/appearance. Snowcone has never mentioned that he is planning to update the forum or use any of my work. I am on my own as far as I know. I told everyone here that I am willing to help and I'm oviously working on an improved forum base on TCP. Ultimately, the answer to any questions rests upon Snowcone.

I know that MANY members have had ideas and opinions and I'm ready to design a forum based upon all of those ideas. I like TCP and I'm willing to help upgrade this awesome community  ;D

i have to log off for a few hours. be back later ...

Wiki Threads -- only forum that I frequent which has them is CAG

Here is an example: Japanese Niche Games Deals Thread 2.0 (https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/342929-japanese-niche-games-deals-thread-20/)

Basically anyone (with a certain forum level, maybe it's title, or post count, etc) can edit the post(s) designated as wiki posts.
Good for threads which maybe have would have lots of updates and and several contributors.

I'd see it being useful here for some of the cover threads where the first post contains templates, 2nd,3rd,etc post contain links to covers not hosted on the site. Would allow those creating covers to help keep the lists updated instead of relying on the OP entirely for that task.
Title: Re: Welcome Back!
Post by: noemann on March 27, 2015, 10:36:10 AM
i see it from a programming perspective: permission-based settings. so, yes, it can be done.
actually, a new user could be allowed to edit/delete/change any post. you could allow a new user to delete the admins avatar. permissions are powerful.
i would suggest that trustworthy members be grouped apart from registered users (lurkers, spammers, etc.)
we could make a forum called 'wiki-style' place to post and set permissions accordingly.

we could also have hidden (approved members) forums. we could even restrict access based upon a variable. for example, if you have never uploaded a raw scan to tcp, then you cannot see TDIrunners raw scans. otherwise, welcome to TDIRunner's raw scans.

got to go for now. be back later Friends ...

He has.
IIUC it's on constant back burner, as in it's been done but not super actively.

I didn't word it correctly. I'm still sick and thus tired. Anyway, I'm aware of a desire to upgrade but i've not been approached about it as a definite answer. In other words: i'm just building a forum on my own and if ya'all like it, then we'll have a new toybox for all of our gaming desires.

which reminds me, I've already seen a use for one of my bbcodes:

I've always liked tooltips. I've added tooltip functionality (titles) to the board for those who wish to offer explanatory text. For example, I didn't know what IIUC means. I had to look it up. Therefore, we could use my bbcode like that in the above image. I was thinking of already adding common uses, so that shorthand code be used. If I've already added the entire string, then just place a quick code.

okay, back to work ...
I'd like to add a custom profile to the toybox  ;D I've always wanted a few extra fields, such as: favorite game? favorite system?
plus, i'd like to add this wiki-style forum.
I also have some tweaking to do for layout.

also, I'm adding languages to the forum so that each user can select a default language. I've added German, Finnish and Japanese. I'll add more...

regarding wiki-style:
I tried to see if permissions could be configured for smf too and it worked!

here is what I did:
create a new group called Team Players.
create a new category called TCP Team Work with one forum called Wiki-style editing.
created a new profile called Wiki-Team and set permissions to modify someone elses post ONLY in the Team Work category.
set Default Profile for all other groups/forums excluding guests.

so, it works for smf 2x as well.

edit:
Also, i suggest a registration Q&A challenge to combat spam.
I am playing with something similar to the following question:

numbers "one" and "2" replace which games? Legend of "one" and mega "2".
answer: zelda man

Title: Re: Welcome Back!
Post by: noemann on March 29, 2015, 07:14:47 AM
No, I don't know what you mean. Dutch is a Noun/Adjective for one from The Low Lands.  :P
the forum on my server is a test forum, so it's not TCP. It's a development environment.

Meantime, I just added custom bbcodes to smf 2x. The spoiler code is now fully functional.
I'm surprised that TCP is so outdated with all that is available.
I'm hoping that Snowcone upgrades because alot can be accomplished with the software.

My opinion is smf or bb. I like both but smf is more simplistic in design (nicer to look at.)
I am going to use smf for my own website. I will be adding a forum for my members thanks to TCP.
I'm glad that i started investigating the forum software. good stuff.

anyway, I'm almost finished with functionality for a tcp upgrade. If Snowcone decides to pursue a change, he can download my framework and go from there. The layout is unchanged because i believe that Snowcone already has a template/theme.

I have alot to do today. Hope you have a Great Day ...

By Dutch I meant their color of choice which is orange like TCP.
Title: Re: Welcome Back!
Post by: noemann on March 29, 2015, 11:55:09 AM
oh ja, I didn't think about that meaning  :P da! I should've known that one.
I'm not changing themes because I understand that Snowcone has one that he'd like to use (the Orange.)
I'm more focused on functionality and customizing functionality (adding custom bbcodes, approved mods, etc.)

However, my Wife just found another forum and i've installed that one. wow! I like it.
I am going to play with it a bit today and see what i can do with it. Maybe that will be the one for TCP.
we'll see...

By the way, my site is not game related. just so you know. I am a photographer too.
enough about me and my site.

I will announce when i am finished with a useable upgrade and everyone can decide if they want to use it or not.
I will add orange theme for the hell of it ...

going to eat dinner now. Have a Great Day Arseen ...

Yeah I remembered your paparazzi tendency. ;D

Yeah the night will be nice, as I'm heading to do a night shift.
I watch TV while making sure that 7 persons stay in their beds, or I might sleep... or hang in TCP.
Such a laboursome work at nights!!! 8)

I'm starting to tweak the design now.

I've added orange to the drop-down menus. Dutchified  ;D that's not even a word.

Anyway, I will make the test forum look exactly like this forum and see if Snowcone likes everything. I'll need some time to learn the code so that I can make a TCP theme. I'm going to start coding now ...

Have a Great Day.

i've tampered with the code alot today and worked in 32 choices  ;D
Colors-a-Plenty, my Friends.

I've done alot of programming today and now i'm tired. Time to call it a day.
the forum is looking good. L8er.

alot of forum software is poorly coded. I am getting stressed out trying to find code that should be organized neatly. I am amazed at how many programmers lack an understanding of simple concepts such as scope. I have decided to start production of my own Forum Software. I am writing it in asp.net. I've done some research and I will choose to use C# for server side details. I am new to C# so i will spend some time learning the basics. I will work on my software in my spare time. I want to make it powerful, thus, the program will not be open source.

Meantime, i'll have to limit customization of a tcp upgrade. I'm sick of the sloppy code. I'll just finish what i've started and you can use it if you want to do so.

I'm off to read some C# books...

I'm still working on a forum. Not going away  ;D

update:
have you guys seen the CKeditor?  :o wow! what a nice piece of work. so many options. H0lY CoW.
I am playing with MyBB and I really like MyBB design but I hate the SCEditor that they use by default. Then I discovered CKEditor. Imagine that on TCP.

check out the full demo:
http://ckeditor.com/demo#full

any thoughts?  ;D
obviously, one would need to customize the editor download. We don't want to be st00pid and permit iframe or flash here. just sayin'...

Is a full featured editor like CKeditor a feature you guys think we are missing?

I suppose that I'm the only one that likes it. Noone has said anything.
I like the editor as it addresses a few issues mentioned here before. I think that resizing images was mentioned a few times. I hate to implement newer technologies which could exclude older systems but customization of the editor allows one to remove unfriendly features.

I asked for any thoughts but noone has mentioned anything. Moving on ...

I think the message posting interface is good enough.

I think CKeditor is a bit overkill for forum like messaging. You would have to trim down the options and end up with pretty much what we already have.

An image resizing feature would be nice, but it does not require any change of editor. A few lines of CSS or a small jQuery plugin could facilitate that on the forum view.

If there is a site redesign in progress, one nice feature that could be put in is to make the design responsive (with something like bootstrap framework).

the current forum is outdated. smf is at 2.09. I decided to investigate the newer version and other forums in existence.

image restraints are already included with smf but currently not in use. I cannot enable such restraints as i am not an administrator. I would recommend 400x400 max-size for posts and 160x80 max-size for signatures.  noone has said that ckeditor is specifically for resizing an image - it's just another nice feature of the editor. css requires no intelligence to author so anyone could add it to a post file. I prefer using html5 on my site which even offers input type for color. very nice upgrade to html.

anyway, I only offered to help upgrade the forum which is smf. I have nothing to do with tcp. i'm just another member here.
i suppose i'll keep my opinions to myself. off i go...

Hi noemann, I'm just another member too (1 out of 1282). Please don't stop doing what you like just because I may have a different preference on small details.

In first place, I replied to your message because I had interest in it, certainly not to tell you how things should be done (that is a big no-no for brainstorming sessions).

Keep on the great work.

Hello monjici, I'm not mad or something. maybe i sounded rude? if so, I'm sorry. I usually type in a hurry these days as i have much less free time. I'm familiar with you here at tcp. I've seen your posts before and you contribute alot of good stuff here. all opinions are welcome. positive or negative. I take no offense to someone offering an opinion  ;D

i'm happy to help tcp upgrade the forum. i plan on making a template for the site too. I like tcp. i just thought that i would mention ckeditor and see if averyone likes it or not. i like it but some may not. I'm moving on. all is good  ;D

i have school in a few hours so i have to log off now. i need my morning coffee. I hope you have a great day ...

well, you have me on your side. Just let me know what you have in mind and i'll work it the project. pm me or email me.
I have had a long week, so i am going to bed early. i am so tired.
i am going to work on more programming tomorow.
i am looking at several books about newer technologies to catch up with the industry.

anyway, i'll get back to the site/forum work tomorrow morning. time is 10pm here.
Goodnight...

Hey noemann, what happened to this, did you happen to finish?
Title: Re: Welcome Back!
Post by: noemann on August 30, 2015, 10:24:17 AM
I've changed alot of code but i ran into problems.

1. i downloaded and installed Microsoft Visual Studio to use php and mysql. The damn thing didn't work correctly. I posted a few questions on their message board/forum and as usual someone attacks my post. ask a simple question, get a "you're a troll" response. typical americans here. every damn forum has a useless american exercising the word troll once-per-day. so i say, hey, Microshit, Fock you.
i've uninstalled this garbage software. Apache is designed for linux. Windows versions are unstable. i will not install Apache.
i only have my laptop right now. all of my other systems are in storage. i'm not installing anymore web servers. I hate MS.

2. smf, phpboard etc. ask a few questions in a forum and the troll word appears again. sick of that shit. I asked a simple question about where to find the code to change something in the forum. i can't read every line of code - i have a life too. ya? damn shit. anyway, more attacks from members.
no! wait a minute! here is what i got from smf forums: why do you want to customize it? then came troll attacks. LOL.

3. i'm too busy right now.

i'm wondering if i should post this message because we have "troll" users here too.

now someone might reply with a troll response because they think it would be funny...

I hate trolls as much as the next guy.  In fact, I might hate them more.  But I hate it even more when you see people encourage the trolling by responding to their comments.  I can't help but think, "How do people not know how trolling works by now?"  The ONLY reasons trolls exist, is because people respond to them.  The new trend now is for trolls to go around accusing others of trolling.  However, nothing has changed.  DO NOT respond and they will do away.  Fact.

One of the reasons why I love this site, is that the trolling is almost non-existant.  Sure one or two will get in every once and a while, but the community is small enough that it's easy to weed them out.

And for the record, I've seen many trolls from outside of the US, so we aren't the only country that breeds them. ;)

Hopefully you get your software issues figured out.  How is the baby?  Our is almost 2 now, so he usually sleeps through the night, but last night was the exception.  He hasn't been feeling too good and there was more crying last night than sleeping..... :'(

the guy at Microshit ende up deleting his post  :o
i guess MS told him that it may not be good for business.
i asked a simple question and he started with an attitude and used the word trolling.
then i suppose he asked some of his friends to post too.
interesting. turns out, i was correct; he was wrong. too late...

meantime, i ha the same experience at the board forums.
smf folks insist that you shouldn't customize the code. i got pissed and moved on.

my Son is much better  ;D he burps himself which amazes me. he figured out why we pat his back.
we only have to pat his back if he has trouble getting it out.
he is much better dealing with gas now. he still fusses but no screaming.
all is good here.  :)

i hate those long nights. i get stressed out. i hate it when i have no sleep.
appeasing a crying baby can be difficult when you don't know why the baby is crying.
i always go through a mental list: are you hungry? y/n. need to burp? y/n. dirty diaper? y/n. gas? (listen for rumbling and belly noises) y/n. cold/warm? y/n. constipated? y/n (consider gas drops to relieve pressure). laying on something and cutting circulation? y/n.

we sometimes rub the belly and back or bounce him gently like a ride in a stroller (to break gas bubbles and calm him down/relax him.)
all else fails, miss sleep and drink alot of coffee.  ;D

i hope that your Son is feeling better. try to get some sleep TDIRunner.

edit: you know, TDIRunner, i was thinking that maybe your Son is having trouble with teeth?
crying at this time: i think that it is why they call them the terrible twos.
i would check for teething issues...

We are pretty sure it's the last of his teeth coming in.  The fact that he has a runny nose isn't helping either.  :-\

It's funny though, this morning, he was the happiest baby in the world.  My wife and I are too tired to move and he is running laps around the house.  :P
