Anyone else do this? I came across a giant bin of 2600 games at a thrift store today and bought one game I knew was good: Pitfall. They were all priced $2.99 and I noticed some other popular games like Space Invaders and Ms. Pac Man. Problem is, I don't have an Atari 2600. I told myself when I started collecting that the NES was as old as I would go. Now I'm here buying 2600 games. I also have two original Xbox games and I don't own an Xbox or Xbox 360. Is this this bad? Do I have a problem?! :P Anyone else do this?
P.S.
I saw Pitfall II in the pile and researched it when I got home and it looks to be a pretty good game. I'm regretting not buying it, but I'm also thinking to myself, "Do I really want a 2600?"

I own like 7 PSP games now and i dont own a playstation portable.
Lol
I used to have one though and i still plan on getting another one.
So as long as you plan on getting one I find it completely acceptable.

I did the exact same thing lol. I ended up doing the atari flash back 2 mod.
Now I just need a NGPC (have a small stack of games for it :P)

Yup, about 2 years ago I bought a stack of turbo grafx cd games that were too good a deal to pass up. Still don't have any means to play them. Lol

I have a few SNES and Genesis games but I don't own either system at the moment. I do plan on getting both of them at some point but I'm not sure when xD
-
Bought an original xbox game (thinking I could play it on my 360) but then found out it was one of the few xbox games incompatible with the 360 :\
Not wanting to have a game I couldn't play I started looking at xbox's....not long after I found a CL ad that had one for cheap lol
But I would buy games for systems I don't have if I know I wanted to get the system...I'd hate having a game with no way to play it lol

I've been buying Sega CD games even though I don't own the system. I've been waiting to come across one at a good price.

I bought everything for my bare model 1 sega cd that was supposed to work but didn't, so i returned it to the buyer. I still have all that stuff (joining plate with screw, mixing cable, Retro game cave 3in1 power adapter & I even own a Mega Everdrive that also acts as a Backup Ram cart) but no sega cd :(
Eventually I'll get one though.
-
I dont have a TG16 or Gamegear, but own Kieth Courage, Shining Force: tSoH and Defenders of Oasis.
I primarily collect RPGs. If I see them cheap enough I grab em.
-
I found a NES game at a dump (Tecmo Bowl) and I took it, I did not own a NES
I got a N64 controller at a tag sale, no N64
I found Genesis, NES and SNES CIB games at a old video store for cheep (Battletoads In Battlemaniacs, Pro Wrestling, Sonic 2, Gods, Lagoon, and some others), Did not have those
Found 2 Dreamcast games at tag sales (Generator and Soul Calaber) No DC
Got a Saturn game at Goodwill (Dragonforce), No Saturn
I have Rockband 1 & 2, The Beatles Rockband instruments, and soon Tales of Xsomething for PS3, No PS3 currently.
I bought a Famicom game off eBay (Chalenger), No Famicom currently.
I own many manuals and boxes to games I do not own.
You can see some of the stuff on display in old collection pics.

I only do it when I know I'll be picking up the system...although I have a box of Odyssey 2 games and do not currently own one. I did at one point buy Sega CD games when I didn't have a system because well...I could just use an emulator till I got the system, same with 3DO.
-
Well, i have some PS2 games but i don't own one, planing on buying one in a future
-
I've done that quite a bit and have eventually acquired most of the systems that I wanted....with the exception of the Sega CD...found a bunch of games that were in really good shape at a local thrift store for like $2.00 a pop so couldn't pass that up. Still waiting on finding a good deal on a working Sega CD.
-
I haven't bought any, but I have received games from people who don't want some of their Wii games anymore. Now that the Wii mini is out, I might actually buy it and get to play them.
-
I owned Mega Man 1-6 before I got my NES
I own Mega Man for the Game Gear and Mega Man X7 and X8 for the PS2, and own neither systems.
I plan to get Mega Man: The Wily Wars reproduction cart for the Genesis, as well as Mega Man 64 for the Nintendo 64, despite not having either console, and I was planning to get Mega Man: Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X for the PSP without actually buying a PSP (by chance I ended up getting 3 PSPs for free, and managed to get one of them to work, so now I have a working PSP with no games).
The only reason I have them is because of my Mega Man Collection. I have no plans of ever getting a Game Gear, and I've been on the fence about a PS2 for a long time (not so much on "is PS2 good?" but rather "is it worth it to try and hunt down the quality PS2 games now?") and even if I decide I want it, I won't be making any purchases anytime soon (being broke sucks).
-
Picked up Tetris for a Philips CDI, after 4 years I think I give up on hoping to find one on a Goodwill run.
If you have a modded xbox it plays TG16CD and sega cd games very well (and imo has a better controller, mainly due to cord length)
-
It's pretty rare that I find games for systems I do t have, so I don't really have that problem. If I actually do come across a game for a system I don't have, I usually pick it up then get the system later.
-
2600 was before my time but i'd like to get vader one sometime and a couple carts. and i do own dreamcast games with nothing to play them on, but generally i'll try to avoid that sort of situation since you can't confirm the used stuff you just bought actually works. only got a few snes, 3ds and vita games before picking the machines up.
-
I usually make it a point to avoid buying games for system I don't yet own. There have been a couple of exceptions here or there, but that's generally my rule. This rule mostly only applies to newer-gen systems, as I have all the older systems I want at this point. But I've missed out on good deals in the past simply because I couldn't justify the purchase without a system to play it on.
-
I've done this once. Street Fighter Alpha 3 for PS1. I never owned a PS1 or any other Sony console. But I did play the game. Around that time I also discovered emulation, so I played the crap out of it on PC.
Right now I'm also considering buying Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4. I've played them in the past and I think those are the best JRPGs out there. If only P3P had the expansion that P3FES has that would be THE best version of the game.
-
I've considered buying some Turbografx/PC-Engine CD games since they can be played on emulators.
But the only games I've actually bought without owning the system were a few 3rd party Wii games that Walmart stocked the week leading up to the Wii's release. Almost didn't get the Wii launch night and most of those games turned out not to be very good (as is often the case with launch titles), so I've avoided repeating that mistake.

This.
Picked up Kingdom Hearts for 5 euros and a few other games for 1-5 euros a piece, all decent titles.
Never owned a PS2 though. Might try and get a hold of a backwards compatible PS3 just for that.
-
yes, I have a bunch of CAVE shmups for JP XBOX 360.
-
I will buy games for systems I don't have if the game part of a franchise I am a fan of or as a collector item. For example I reciently bought Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Jaws for NES even though I don't have a NES but because I am a fan both franchises.
