No anti spam stuff - that was a 2 year old topic that got bumped because of.....spam

The recent spam infiltration is to do with the registration process.  Read the red notice at the top of the page.

Maybe we should go back to approving all registrations.

This would be my vote.

It's not the spammers who come, spam and go,  but the lurking spammers who slow down the site.

If I had to guess, I'd wager the current approval system went into place on the 18th.

Dat chronologically-sorted Member List. Sigh.

Correct guess.

This resulted in many new eager members having their accounts deleted 2-3 times before getting in. This meant angry emails to the admins and many times to me directly. I'm prepping us to move to a different forum software so I'm hoping that helps minimize future spam too.

A lot of those are probably just plain lurkers. I can only imagine the number of accounts that have been made only to download some covers or just make a request post.

Folks - don't reply to the spam.  All you're doing is wasting your time and bumping the spam to the top of the page.  It's not like A.) The spammers will read your replied or B.) Will care about your thoughts regarding their spamming activities.

Report it and move on.

I don't know about any other mods, but whenever I'm at my computer, I get a pop up whenever anyone reports a post (via a notification that I have a new e-mail) and I swing by as soon as I can (which is usually pretty soon).

I'd be interested to know what the purpose of the SPAM is .. how does the person setting up the SPAM benefit?

Most of the time it's illegible anyways.

It leaves backlinks with related content (in some cases) from our site to theirs. This helps them rank higher for certain keywords.
