http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act

this has been running a couple weeks now.

i know the site by no means is piracy, but it indeed has something on the intellectual property (like when sore clerks deny to print the covers).
whhat do you think?

I really really hate this bill. It could really kill sites like this and sites that strive off of user-generated content. I'm just going to link two videos that describe it better than I ever could because I could write an essay on this, and my time is better spent writing essays that are actually due for class.

Just host the site outside of the US, then US law does not apply.

I honestly don’t think that this is the type of site that is being targeted nor will it fall under this laws jurisdiction. Technically speaks this new bill could create grounds for action against the site, but someone would still have to care enough to push the charges through.

If this were some magical kill switch that could find and turn us off we would have to worry but the sites this targets are those sites that are already under attack by major companies because they cost them money. Sites for example that allow you to watch movies for free or download free games.

Our site here allows you to download user created content that serves no other purpose than pure joy and in many ways free advertisement for the videogame industry. No one on this site makes any money off of the items distributed here and no one loses and money by their distribution.

When you look through this site you find one of two things. Cover art for a game you already purchased (making the big companies happy) or a cover the peaks your interest in a now future purchase (something that should make the big companies REALLY happy).

If you see sites like this being shut down then expect to see game reviews and fan art pages taken down too. The reality is that it would cost a company like Nintendo money to shutdown a site like this that probably makes then money so…if they shut it down they lose twice!

Keep making covers and enjoying gaming! As long as we stay free to use there should never be any problems for this site. Think about how many different sites there are on the Internet that aren’t in the “grey area” but who are really breaking the law. Until every one of those is shutdown, no one is even going to even think about thecoverproject, let alone take action.

It wouldn't take much money at all to shut down the "good" sites like this one. Threat of legal action is usually enough to kill off sites like this, sites that, as you say make little or no money. They have no money to defend themselves. If this law is passed then expect to see sites like this one lumped in with dozens or hundreds of others that host covers for DVDs. The cover project is not going to be seen as a site that "brings joy" but as a site that "enables" piracy. That false perception will, you can be sure, result in form Cease and Desist Letters being sent out to every single site like this one. Those letters will be printed for a dime a dozen and will cost next to nothing. Better to cover their butts and vigorously defend against any perceived infringement of copyright than spend time and money to see which ones are legit and which ones aren't.

Boycott the companies that support this bill.

Thankfully Obama intends to Veto this bill. But Congress can override his veto...if they do then...fuck.
