Is there anything we can do about the amount of spam posts, its getting annoying? cant we have some sort of captcha or something on posts or sign up so people can automate them and what not.

'meh, it happens.

Tends to come in waves.

This forum actually seems to get a bit less than on some forums I've been on.

I think some people aren't aware of the sheer volume of spam we are getting because it gets dealt with so quickly.  I logged on at one point yesterday and there were about 30 new spam posts.   This is a regular occurrence at the moment.

Take it to Snowcone.  He's a great guy that listen to suggestions.  If he thinks your idea would be beneficial to the site, he'll do it.

'meh.  On NintendoWorldReport.com, another forum I moderate (i.e.: play Spam Captain) on, 20+ spam posts isn't anything unusual.  It's the internet, people robots spam.

We have a captcha in place afaik but that doesn't keep spammers away completely. These aren't bots those are people who get paid for spamming.

The thing that would probably make the biggest difference would be setting up a robots.txt file that exempts the forums from all the search engines.

Spammers aren't posting on the forums to sell crap to you and me.  They're posting trying to get the various search engines to pick up on their links and jump them up in the rankings.

Take the forums out of the search engines and you'll slowly see spammers go away.

I agree with this.

It's been pretty bad for a while now. Arseen's pretty good about getting it, but damn it's a mess.

Log in here at like 3 or 4am and you'll see it FLOODED with spam posts.

The really big problem is also that the person in charge has gone missing almost completely for the past 1 and a half months.

I haven't gone missing.... I don't check this place on a daily basis. I don't even get here on a weekly basis right now. I'm neck deep in trying to get our forums moved off SMF since I'm just not happy with the features and tools available, but I'm having to write and tweak a conversion utility.

That said, I've updated the robots.txt file and excluded the forums from all search engines.
