I was reading a post on the Nintendo forums and, as not everyone has the time/money to case their N64 collection, I got to thinking.

The biggest issue with N64 games is that you can't read what they are from the top/side - there's no label!

Now, this is just an idea I'm throwing outand it's not something I have the talent or time to do, but... what would y'all think about putting together a N64 Top Label project?

I suggest we find a standard sized label that you can buy (probably Avery brand, as they're about the most common) that fits right onto the top of the N64 cart.  Using the dimentions of that label, individual (and purdy) labels could be made that have the name of the game and, perhaps, some pretty graphics on them that go with the game.

This is just a crazy idea, but I know there's quite a bit of N64 love on this site and since the N64 cover project is pretty much done, this could be a fun way to go...

Good idea, but more work would make people go crazy.

lol... probably. ;)

Just to note, while it's neat, this probably isn't something I personally would even use (since I don't have a printer and wouldn't be able to print the labels out at Kinko's or Staples probably...)

I was just reading that post and thought it'd be a neat thing to suggest and throw the idea out there. :)

Another UncleBob crazy idea... :P

This would be neat for those unable or unwilling to buy Universal Media cases, but for the rest of us (which are among the majority) we don't need such labels because the N64 games fit perfectly into the cases (they were designed for them!) and then the insert convays which game is which. So it would kind of be pointless from that prespective. but hey, if anyone's interested, go nuts.

Neat idea. $3 each seems a bit high though...

*edit* Maybe not...

I would love to do something like that for my games that don't have end labels (SFC/N64)

Haha, those top labels for Super Mario 64, StarFox64, Diddiy Kong Racing etc. looks awfully familiar.  :P
It was taken from my vertical cover that we have on the site.  I can tell because there are the same smudge tool marks that i didn't clean up and logo placement over the art. I don't mind them using them at all. I think this is a really good idea for people that keep their carts loose.

EDIT:  It is VERY pricey though  :o

EDIT #2:  We could do that VERY easily and squish pretty much all the labels you need on one piece of sticker put for less than a buck

EDIT #3:  I take it back, maybe i am a little upset about this ... he's claiming them as his own and looks to be making a lot of money on these.  I guess we have just another case of people taking advantage of what we offer for free.  ....Maybe i should register on their forums to educate the potential buyers about the labels ...

100% sure.  Just look at the spines for my vertical covers vs. their labels.  The Zelda Ocarina of Time one is the most obvious

For some reason my comment on that site you linked isn't going through so i'll repost what i was going to write here until its up there.

I think its a great idea but ...

I don't totally feel comfortable with this guy taking custom cover artwork he didn't make so he can make a quick buck.

Check out some of the spines from the covers that thecoverproject.net provides for free.
Look familiar?

Diddy Kong Racing

Super Mario 64
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=10032
Legend of Zelda

Super Smash Bros.
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=10311
StarFox 64
http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=11154

Shall I continue?

Normally I wouldn't do this but since i feel so uncomfortably about this guy making money off of other people's hard work (not to mention overpricing)feel free to drop by thecoverproject.net and i'll make you all the top labels you want for FREE!!!!
I'll explain how to print them off yourself and i'll provide all the actual competed top label images.

Cheers!

Yeah I thought the spines looked familiar as well. The fact that he's making a profit off this bugs me very much only because it can easily be done for free. I do think it would be a cool thing to do on the site though. Hopefully there aren't any ass-backwards policies around taking someone else's idea and doing it for free even though they've been using your work to sell it, because I wouldn't want our site to get shut down over something like that. Then again I'm always paranoid of this stuff.

If there's a policy about that, then we'd come out ahead anyway...

@Zombiewolf

The way i figure it is if he is trying to pass our hard-work as his own then i hold the right to use his idea.  His top spine label is a complete rip-off from vertical spines, it even uses the top banner!  Like i said i normally wouldn't care about this but on NintendoAge alone he is going to make $400 off of those guys!  :o  Something that should be free considering he didn't do all the work.  The idea isn't a new one anyway, unclebob requested something like this about the ~3 years ago.

Also, the 32x label he uses is just the entire spine from a UGC cover... weak  ::)

In that case I propose a new label thread :D

My only concerns legally were that we were going to be taking something that someone else was selling and making it free, but the fact that he's stealing our work entirely makes that a moot point.

Legally he has no ground to stand on. He is making money from copyrighted images owned by nintendo and the the deveopers of their respective games.
