Lumberjack42's Family Computer Spine:

Satoshi Matrix's Famicom Spine:

There has been some debate over this, but since this site is democratic, I beleive everyone's opinion is important in deciding how to proceed. May the results of this poll determine the standard spine for use with the project.

Arguments for Family Computer:
-Offically named by Nintendo
-Consistancy with "Nintendo Entertainment System" spine
-Concerns over legality of changing a logo to "Famicom"

Arguments for Famicom:
-[opinion] looks better, sounds cooler
-More commonly reconized, distinctive single word name
-Disk System Spine would look crowed saying "Nintendo Family Computer Disk System"

Please anyone with a stake in this please think carefully before voting.

Cheers.

I vote consistency. So I vote for Family Computer.

Well, so far that's two for Family Computer, one for Famicom. I think we need a few more votes to make this a more equitable vote.

It's looking like (literally) 5-1 on the spine vote. I would still like to get some more votes in before making it official.

Yeah me too. Anyone who reads this, please vote! The more votes the better. I've cross posted this thread on Famicom World as well in hopes they'll vote too.

I'm not cross at the voting choice, in fact I had a feeling that this would happen. I myself am kind of unsure about it too. And becides, I can modify the cases easily for my personal collection if needbe. This is just to decide the offical spine the site should adaopt. By the way lumberjack, could you please email me your beta Famicom template? I want to test it a few ideas of my own. email me at satoshimatrix@hotmail.com.

Cheers.

Famicom does sound better and is more recognizable, but Family Computer is more authentic, so it gets my vote.

Couldn't both options be posted? I say make both styles available, and let the user decide which they want for their personal collection.

I personally think Famicon sounds better, but not having any games for it, I'm not gonna bother voting :)

While I don't see me printing out any Famicom covers, I have to say "Family Computer" would, IMHO, be the better option, since it is the official name.  Famicom would be like having covers that just say "NES" instead of "Nintendo Entertainment System"....

But at the same time, Famicom is much more reconizeable. Even Nintendo eventually dropped the Family Computer name, with Famicom games such as Famicom Wars, Famicom Detective Club, the sequal system the Super Famicom, and years later Famicom Mini series on the GBA.

There were such examples for the NES like NES Open Golf, but Nintendo Stuck with the Entertainment System idea. The sequal system was even called the same thing, just with Super infront. So Famicom isn't techincally as wrong as some may think.

But by that same token, Everything that has to do with the actual system itself, Nintendo still uses the "Family Computer" brand. I saw that just the other day on a toy replica of the system at Game Exchange. The toy itself, as well as the packaging (licensed by Nintendo, btw) used the original name. Games that use the shortened moniker also had the Nintendo Entertainment System, or the Family Computer name on the box, despite the title.

I voted for the long winded name .... but in all honesty who owns one of these things nowadays? I mean it's as old as the Pong machines or Atari 2600 aint it?

I wasn't even born when these things were around. I think my grandfather was ... but that may even be a stretch as he's dead so I might not be able to verify that ;D

well it seems Lumberjack's Family Computer spine wins out. Hey lumberjack, please send me your template so I can start work on my own covers right away.

The next question: what about the disk system? Should it be "Family Computer Disk System" or "Famicom Disk System" as stated, "Nintendo Family Computer Disk System" makes the label awfully crowded.
