Not to be "that guy" but I called this turn of events before the system ever launched. There were just to many problems with it. To avoid fanboy disapproval I will state now that the system is not inferior but the circumstances were bad. To start with $250 is a lot of money for a handheld anything. For that price most people want a home console. Next you have the fact that while many people like 3D many also staunchly hate it! While I am able to understand that the 3D can be turned off there are many who wouldn't buy a system who points to that as its main selling point feeling like their none 3D counterparts will be less fun as something is missing even if what is missing is by their own choice. While the game line up is "solid" it is also stuff that we have seen before. Zelda remake, Starfox remake, etc. Not everyone shares the love of old titles that many of us hold dear to our hearts and then there are those of us like myself who want the original; not a remake of any kind. (maybe if it was free/cheap but not for the price those games ask) Then there are those people again like myself who feel mistreated and jaded towards nintendo. I am quite discerning about which games I choose to play. They don't all have to be 9-10 rated games as I find I dislike many of those "good" titles but they must bring something special to the table. I don't play games to fill the time. I make time to play the games I will enjoy and Nintendo has been short on those lately. It seems that since the passing of the SNES no system from nintendo has been able to cater to my needs. I still own an N64, a GC, a Wii, and the handhelds but glancing at my libraries I can't help but see a difference. PS - 40 games, N64 - 14; PS2 - 52 games, GC- 11; PS3 (which I only just purchased) 19, Wii 8. Every generation there are fewer games from nintendo and so I have created a rule that I now see others following. I won't buy a system from nintendo until it has 5 exclusives that I "must" play. This can take years for them to give me and so far there is nothing that I have to play for the 3DS that I haven't already played somewhere else. The Wii U is going to have the same problem. They are pitching games that I have already played on other systems so why would i buy another system with what looks like a worse controller just to play the same stuff again? Nintendo has fallen as a gaming leader. Nintendo is not without great ideas. But if they don't start sharing them then this next generation might be their "last story". Congratulations if you got the reference. If not take this with you. Nintendo refuses to produce an exclusive title and ship it to the states unless it will make a certain profit that is far higher than the profits that most others make. As a result of this greed they have started to lose loyal customers and may soon meet their downfall. I'm not claiming to know everything or anything really about video games or the way business works (although I spend a good deal of my time with both) but so far I have predicted many things correctly about the industry as a whole because I have eyes and ears and unlike our favorite gaming giant of old...I use them. |

Nintendo has sold 87.57 million Wii units. They are Japans 3rd wealthiest company, worth $85 Billion and have been involved in gaming since 1889. I think they can weather a slightly underselling handheld. I have been hearing this same junk for most of my life. First they were crazy to get into videogame consoles after the crash, then Sega was going to destroy them with the Genesis, then the Playstation was going to drive Nintendo from gaming, then the gamecube was a kids toy, then "a handheld with two screens??? thats stupid!", then "who wants to wave their arms at the TV???" Now people are going on and on about the 3DS and the WiiU... Nintendo knows what they are doing, every so often they have a disappointment or flop like the virtual boy but it is very very rare. |

Clearly you didn’t understand my point most likely because you and I have a different view on what makes a company successful. To begin with all of those other things you said about the DS and Sega were not things that I agreed with and I am a staunch supporter of the DS. It would appear that your view a company’s success based purely on numbers which is an honest and good approach that many people do take. So yes they have made a lot of money. But I have two issues with this approach in this particular case. The first is that sales figures alone don’t prove the quality of a product. Companies like extenze (<sp?) and other companies that make miracle diet pills rake in lots of cash but create a poor product and retain poor customer loyalty. If I could bottle my own urine and sell it at a billion dollars a pop I would. It doesn’t mean I have a good product; simply ill advised customers and as we have all seen from mothers entering Wal-Mart with carts full of shovel ware, people buy anything. Next if you are basing it a pure numbers well they are still sort of failing. My commentary on the last story is an example of this. Nintendo has data proving that they would make millions of dollars by simply porting the title to the US along with several other finished games. They have gone as saying though that the profit while high isn’t enough for them to care (obviously lawyer-ed terms were used but I fine search for the exact quote futile as we all understand what was meant.) Which is sort of foolish because if that simple products raised them from say your $85 billion to say $86 billion well that’s a billion better isn’t it? Now don’t get me wrong. I adore some of Nintendo’s products. I stated in my previous comment that I own all of their system thus far excluding the 3DS and to make thing completely clear I also lack a virtual boy encase someone tries to troll me about “lying” through omission. I simply would like what many people these days would like which is for them to support the hardware they produce and make better choices because I want them to continue to make game. I want them to prosper because I couldn’t image a world without a new Zelda or a new Mario. But I currently have to imagine it without countless other good titles because of these poor choices they have made. That was my point. Not that they are going to completely fall of the earth as game designers but simply that they continue to make mistakes and as someone who was once a loyal customer it irks me something fierce. And for the record, I hate waving my arms at a TV. When I want to play sports and move around I go outside :D |
