Hi, I'm new here so start by saying Hi!
I'm in the UK so can't get hold of UGC and was thinking about using VHS boxes instead. I had the idea to use foam around and behind the cart to keep it held in and modify covers from this site to fit.
I would use this for my NES, SNES and N64 games collection.
Has anyone tried anything like this? How close are the dimensions of the covers to the UGC? and would anyone be interested if I posted some pictures and guide if I go ahead with it? If all goes well and other people were interested in doing similar things I would be happy to upload the modified covers!

Definitely do!!! I'm in Germany so I can't get a hold of UGCs either. At least not for a reasonable price. Right now I have all my SNES games in clear VHS boxes without a cover so I'd love to see you doing covers for these or convert existing covers to thier proper dimensions.

tiktektak convertetd some N64 covers for me so I could use them. The overall dimensions were 3200 x 2220. So it has similar dimensions as a UGC it's just not as wide and a little bit more height. I could give you the measurements in cm or mm, but I guess you're better off finding out alone. Tell me if you need them.

I've been modifying the UGC covers for a while now. Here's my earlier post

http://www.thecoverproject.net/forums/index.php?topic=417.msg2798#msg2798

I've now got a spine style I like so I'm slowly getting them to match up. Should look quite good when its done.
If needed, I've still got about 30 snes covers in VHS size on my hard drive so if anyone wants them, give me a shout.

Nice boxes there. Looks like you put alot of work into editing the arts to suit the VHS cases. I was thinking about having the art sideways like the original box art.

I'm home from university today so I've edited the cover for legend of zelda for the NES to fit a VHS box. (I don't have a cart to put in so I'm just guessing the game will fit when I get back later!) I made the cover about 2cm too long so cut abit off each end. I'll need to mess around with dimensions so I can get a perfect fit.

I'll get some pics up later with the cartridge...if it fits! I'll be doing NES covers then SNES then N64. I'm going to experiment with foam to hold the cart at some point aswell. Hopefully if this works I'll make VHS covers and foam inside parts for all my games and some acessories such as gameboy camera and game & watch games. I'll post how to guides on here if all goes well and hopefully I can upload the custom covers for people to use.

EDIT:
Just got back and the NES cart doesn't fit! It's very very close but just doesn't work so looks like I'll have to find something else. Maybe wide DVD cases. I'll still be making covers and boxes for all my SNES and N64 so I'll keep this thread updated with any I make.

These are what I still have on my hard drive. Once I adapt a cover I usually delete it so this is all I have now. Some of them were "test runs" and as such are pretty ropey.

Could you also upload some of the covers as UGCs if you haven't done it allready? Some off them are missing on the site and it would be really great to have them.
Or did you allready upload all of them once upon a time to the site?

Namely they would be(correct me kaiser if some off them are allready posted but not visible on the site):

Addams Family
Illusion of Gaia
JAP_Castlevania 4
JAP_Final Fight
Jimmi Connor Tennis
Junglebook
Lemmings
Ultraman
Pitfall
Unirally

These I didn't find posted so it would be quite awesome to get them up.... My main parts off the projects are SNES and Genesis/Mega Drive covers after all so I'd be happy as can be to get so many at once up to the site.... If it's too much work resizing them for you I'd do that myself without any problem! Just upload what you have as a raw and I'll do the rest!
Your help would be greatly appreciated! If you allready did upload them sometime in the past thanks anyway! :)

Regards Sebastian

VHS cases vary in dimnsions, so can't give one measure.

As for the cases, I use Double wide DVD cases with 27 mm spine, and UGC sized covers fit nicely as the DVD cases are only half centimeter taller.

I've made some custom VHS covers for SNES games a while back (here in Poland UGCs are out of the question). 3 for European games and one for a Japanese game. They're all based on the Japanese design though. They pretty much always had better artwork then the US/EUR, and it's easier to make vertical covers. Currently those are all the games I own, but more will come, when I get new games (currently hunting for Zelda:ALTTP PAL in English, which is somewhat a rarity in Poland).

I live in Finland, and ordering them from england is not that expensive, and probably are easy to find in Poland domestically too.

It also depends on the manufacturer. I've got one double wide DVD case and the cart just slides and rattles all over the place. Besides I've already got a nice way to mod the VHS boxes to house SNES carts. And I've got a ton of VHS boxes as opposed to double wide DVD cases.

If any of you want to go with VHS instead of double wide DVD cases. There's a freeware program called ezCoverMaker. Google it, it's easy to find. It has a VHS template where you just drag/drop the image you want to print and you're done. You can even use the covers formatted for UGCs here and it converts them to VHS. Not a 100% perfectly since the VHS spine is a bit wider, but the difference is minimal. Check my thread in the "Photo Gallery" for images.
