So, I got Duke Nukem Forever a few days ago. Before I got it, I saw a lot of negative reviews for it from sites like GameSpot and IGN and such. But, I had already completely paid off the Balls of Steel edition months in advance, so I decided to take a chance and go for it anyway.

And I'm very glad I did. It seems as if all of the things that critics are complaining about with this game just so happen to be the things that I think make it a fun, one-of-a-kind experience. People seem to hate the platforming, or at least the amount of it. I think it's awesome. It adds a nice bit of fun to be had in between all of the crazy gun fights you get into. People say that the abundance of "side-missions" (make popcorn for strippers, drive an R/C car around a room to retrieve a battery, etc.) make the game feel like it's trying to add gameplay length with no real substance, when I think that they are genuinely enjoyable individual experiences that make the game diverse. There are so many moments in this game that made me say "I could only do this in a Duke Nukem game." and it's really an all-around enjoyable experience for me. The weapons are all fun, that seems to be the one thing that everybody can agree on. It's like the sequel to Duke Nukem 3D that we never got. And, I think that the similarity between the two is what turns modern gamers off, and makes me like it even more at the same time. Critics are saying the game feels "dated" and "un-polished". Of course, being the type of gamer who still plays Atari games, calling something "dated" is completely irrelevant to me, but I can see what they mean. It feels almost as if 3D Realms created a highly advanced FPS game (by 1998's standards), locked that game up in a time capsule, and then allowed Gearbox to publish it. This game is, by no means, a typical modern day FPS game. "Duke Nukem Forever" is not "Call of Duty: Modern Whorefare", like (it seems) people wanted. It sticks very close to it's classic roots, and doesn't revolve 100% around non-stop shooting and killing. There's plenty of (relatively simple) puzzles to solve, side-games to play, and some very interesting and, at times, genuinely difficult, platforming involved as well. I believe that this focus on other activities aside from bloodshed keep the shooting segments feeling fresh and exciting. It's for this reason, actually, that I don't enjoy 90% of modern shooters. All you do is turn your brain off, run down hallways/paths and kill stuff for 6 hours, then it's game over. Duke Nukem Forever really brings back the side-activities, platforming, and infrequent puzzle-solving that I think most critics forgot about in Duke Nukem 3D.

Then again, maybe I'm biased and blinded by my excitement to see my favorite childhood anti-hero in a current-gen game. I played every Duke game, the good and the bad. Sure, the graphics aren't off the charts, and the game isn't non-stop killing, and the loading times are pretty brutal (hint: don't die so much), but I have had an awesome experience with it so far. (I haven't even gotten to the online multiplayer, which most people are saying is the best part of the game.) I feel like this game is very much worthy of being called a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D. I feel like if this game came out a few years ago, on the PS2, it would have been a huge hit and considered a great game. But, amongst today's shooters, and today's gaming audience, the game does feel slightly dated. But, I think that the feeling of being dated adds a lot of charm to the game. It makes it feel like a shooter that has already withstood the test of time, like Duke Nukem 3D.

In short, I think the mainstream gaming audience will dislike this game, and I feel like it might sell poorly unless it's notorious development history sparks a lot of people's interests. But, at the same time, I feel like 3D Realms and Gearbox delivered a perfect love letter to classic Duke fans, and I predict that this game will have a cult-classic following that will only become apparent after a few years. I think this game is pretty excellent, although I might suggest playing through Duke Nukem 3D first, just so you can comparatively tell just how graciously the series has aged.

Anyway, enough of my opinion. How do you guys feel about it? The Duke seems to be getting a lot of unfortunate hate, but this forum has the most diverse group of gamers that I know of, so I wanted to catch everybody's opinion here. Love it? Hate it? Discuss!

FINALLY! A positive review of DNF. Its just sad that Call of Dooty has taken over the Genre so much that classic franchises cant make a comeback without being shit on for being NOT like call of dooty. Frankly, I see it as a VAST improvement over Duke 3D, the build engine was pretty poor when it came to platforming, and this does fix that quite a bit, the weapons are fun, the environments are classic 3D reams, it really reminds me of some old DOS FPS games and thats why I love it. Its a classic style shooter, with some stupid jokes (but still funny) and you don't have to kill terrorists like in almost every FPS these day. The engine is quite good if you ask me, and I would LOVE to see Duke 3D redone with this new engine.

This game will be a cult classic for sure, much like Shenmue has become.

It's good to heard that people like this game. I was getting worried for a sec. ;) I haven't bought a new game in years, so whenever I pick this up I'll be glad to know "dated" isn't a bad thing. The only version of DN3D I have is on iOS...maybe I can struggle to play that before I grab this one.

As for classic shooters, I'll always hold Timsplitters 3 up there. :)

I'm glad someone finally agrees with me! I completely agree with your view on CoD. I'm just not attracted to them any more! They're all the same thing. Looking down the barrel of a gun for 6 hours straight until you finish the game! They're all so similar now that I could probably look at gameplay for the last five big FPS titles and not be able to even tell the difference between them.

Frankly, I see it as a VAST improvement over Duke 3D, the build engine was pretty poor when it came to platforming, and this does fix that quite a bit, the weapons are fun, the environments are classic 3D reams, it really reminds me of some old DOS FPS games and thats why I love it.

I completely agree. There were times when the platforming in DN3D just got downright infuriating! In DNF, they really improved upon that. Also, I heard several reviewers say that the environments are dull and bland, but I'm sitting here playing the game remarking at how the levels really look a lot like current-gen remastering of stages from Duke 3D, and I love them! Like, the desert stage with the four-wheeler really reminded me of the San Andreas Fault level from Duke 3D, and the alien hive reminded me of those alien-infested sections from D3D, with the slimy green walls and alien pods everywhere.

I honestly think that the game is great. I think critics are just being extraordinarily critical on this game, and some are probably looking for a game that could live up to 14 years of hype and development. Which is completely ridiculous. NO GAME could have lived up 14 years of hype, no matter how good it is. That's just impossible.

Honestly, I feel like 3D Realms had A LOT to do with the development of this game. I mean, their logo is still all over this game, despite the fact that they are completely out of business now. I feel like all Gearbox did was put finishing touches on the game, because this game FEELS like a classic 3D Realms game through and through.

Hm, I might be getting this game sooner than I thought.

HOLY CRAP. You know, right when I saw the first Redbox, the first thing that came to my mind was "They need to do this with video games." I'm glad somebody figured out that no-brainer! I wonder if they'll only cost $1/day like the movies. Either way, I hope this turns out to be a successful business model for them and they start offering a LOT more than just a few video games at a time. Maybe a spin-off chain called "Bluebox" or something. Just game-specific vending machines. Maybe then someone could finally put everybody's favorite greedy, fascist corporation out of business. ;D *cough*GameStop*cough*

$2 a day, to rent a game. Hopefully they get some catalog titles in for cheaper prices like $2 for new, $1 for catalog.

RedBox started doing games less then a week ago around here, infact Duke Nukem was the first game I rented from it. And I'm glad I did because Personally I hated the game.

I'm glad you like it and that there are some other people out there that like it as well. But I just couldn't get into it at all.

First off I do want to say that I was never a big Duke fan, I played Duke 3D when I was in high school and thought it was alright. So I went into this game with no expectations, I was just "okay lets try this game that people have been talking about for 15 years". Also I'm not a CoD fan at all.

So from a Non-Duke fan I thought the whole story (or lack there of) was pretty lame, the dialog & jokes reminded me of high school (which could be a good or bad thing, more bad for me), the 360 version had really bad frame rate issues, and the load times, even when installed on the hard-drive took almost a min. I had no issue with the gameplay in the game, but over all that was only meh at best. The game also started off really slow and seemed to take along time to get up and running (It still didn't feel like it was at full when I quit) I was also pretty annoyed with the aiming system, it seemed like I could be pointing right at the guy and the gun would still miss. :/

In the end it just boiled down to the fact I was just not having any fun with the game, I got maybe a 1/4 done with it before I just gave up and sent the game back.

In then end I think I had offically put up with Duke Nukem long enough, and now this game can go away FOREVER! Hope the franchise has better luck in another 15 years.

If anyone's thinking of trying it, be sure to wait. Not many people like the game; it will drop in price very quickly.

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss. Too bad I never played it online. Maybe I should use Xlink Kai.

The day before I was gonna pick it up two of my friends told me not to get it only because of what they heard from others.  I still ended up getting it since I have collected the other duke nukem's + have made covers for them. What little I have played of DNF I so far enjoy playing it alot. it reminds me of how a lot of the old classic fps games were that I love and still play to this day.

That's exactly how I felt playing it. I actually just finished the game (The credits are still rolling. Rock covers of Duke Nukem's theme song FTW. :P ), and I have to say that literally my only complaint is that the game ends. I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience from beginning to end. Not once did anything feel tedious or unnecessary. I can't even fathom how biased against Duke IGN and GameSpot must have been in order to berate the game as much as they did. I found this game to be one of the most enjoyable FPS games that I've played in probably a decade. It is so one-of-a-kind. I can't believe critics hate this game.

Best part? After you beat the game, YOU UNLOCK CHEATS!! Invincibility, one-hit kills, big heads, and the ability to change the DNF freeze ray to the sweet freeze ray from DN3D. I literally cannot remember the last time I saw a modern-day game give you cheats. Cheats are a thing of the past. THIS is the kind of respect for old school games that 3D Realms had. It's too bad that they're out of business now, but Gearbox did a fine job picking up where they left off.

Oh yeah, one more bonus for beating the game: A SOUNDBOARD. Can you say Duke Nukem prank calls anyone? ;D

tl,dr; This game is awesome.
