There were rumors prior to the press conference stating that they would name it simply the "Nintendo". Which I think would have been great. Sorta like, ok, this is who we are, this is what we are about.

But I can see the motivation and maybe even the need to reference to the original Wii. With the Wii they tapped into the vast market of casual and non gamers, who tried out the Wii and made it the success it was and still is. The core or serious gamers already read months in advance about the Wii and made their prorders or bought it at day one. But unfortunately these gamers are not the ones who made the Wii the success it is. That was due to the casual crowd. Now the new system is coming and again, just based on my own oppinion as a passionate gamer, I'm already highly interested and will follow the months to come with great interest. And if nothing unforseen happens to change my mind I'll buy it day one.

The majority of Wii owners (I own a Wii msyself, just to clarify I'm NOT in any way try to slam it) is not concerned about a new console. But when they read Wii U and then you tell them it's an upgrade to the Wii, they might at least be interested. Also in the last years a lot of households bought a HD-TV. So maybe it makes sense for them to upgrade and they see it in a different way than most of us. Kinda like a lot of people upgraded from a DVD player to BluRay.

I will just throw out there that I am a huge Wii U skeptic. I want so badly to believe in Nintendo, but they really need to stop trying to hard to alienate themselves from the PS3 and 360. It really puts a damper on third-party support. I really can't remember a good Wii game that wasn't made by Nintendo. (I'm sure that there are, but none come to mind at the moment.) I feel like the Wii U is going to be the same.

I don't doubt that it will be financially successful, though. The wide consumer market that was won over with the Wii is probably going to at least be curious about the Wii U. Plus, it's got the big touch screen for people who were a fan of Apple's rapidly growing iPad/iPhone gaming scene. I think Nintendo got a big market with the Wii, and they caught a glimpse of that market being lost to Apple. The Nintendo CEO has even been quoted in saying a few years after the Wii's release that their "biggest competitor as of right now is Apple." I honestly think that when Nintendo as a company got that mindset, that was when Nintendo lost sight of the core "gamers" market, and started exclusively going after non-gamer consumers of all ages.

Of course, I will probably end up buying one and hoping for the best, just as I did with the Wii... And the Atari Jaguar... :-X

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm most afraid of.

They do however seem to be pretty serious about third party and more mature games this time around. Batman Arkham City, Battlefield 3 and Assassin's Creed are real heavyweight franchises that, if done right on the system, could potentially not only sell on their own but also sell systems.

I do know what you mean and I share your fear. I just hope that both of us are wrong in the end :)

I agree as well. I hope so badly that I'm wrong.

Also, one thing that kinda irked me was that the only game they really showed off was another New Super Mario game? I mean, you make this brand new console with all of this revolutionary hardware...... And then you turn around and churn out another 2D platformer that can be played with two buttons and a D-pad? Where's the revolution in that? It's essentially a reboot of the game we've been playing since 1985, and THAT is all you're bringing to the table to show off a revolutionary console? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a good game, just like all the other Mario platformers, but come on. If they opened up the Wii launch showing NSMBWii with people sitting on the couch playing with the controller sideways, it would not have been successful at all. The Wii showed launch videos of people doing crazy stuff with their consoles! Now with Wii U... I can play Mario on a device that's dangerously similar to an iPad, or I can flick it up to my TV... Whoopie.

Does everyone bitching about the Wii realize how much more successful it has been over other systems..?  It doesn't need to be all that more special, xbox has no "Mario" figure to compete with and the PS3 has been an overpriced disappointment from day one with its big bad ass technology and no good games to play.  And that slogan makes me laugh, "It Only Does Everything" lmao!  They came up with that AFTER they took away its only 85% PS2 backwards compatibility  ;D

Yeah, hopefully that was just some sort of program update to the current NSMB Wii game that let's you move the game to the new control tablet.

If they make Mario game it should be full blown HD 3d Mario whit innovative non-gimmicky support fo the new control tablet.

Maybe with Dennis Hopper (R.I.P) as Bowser!  ;D

Yeah, right. Aside from the techdemo with the bird and the very short glimpse of Zelda in HD (which when it comes out might look entirely different) all we saw as very Wii like. Maybe I'm just spoiled nowadays but a full price game for a new console shouldn't look like a downloadable XBL or PSN game for $5 - $15. I'm guessing drop the next bomb in a few months showing us actual Wii U graphic. The interview with Reggie over at Gametrailers.com at least specified some details. He was dodging many questions and didn't want to tell too much but at least he said that it will be able to have 1080p graphics, a proprietary optical medium, suppsedly in the range of a BluRay as far as storage capacity is concerned, an online service and it will be a competetive hardware with competetive pricing. So maybe they won't do anything too fncy with the hardware and will be able to sell it at the price the PS3 and Xbox360 are at right now.

Honestly, I think they are just teasing us :D They wait until after the holiday season when they sold enough copies of Zelda Skyward Sword, which will be one, maybe THE, last of their big titles for Wii and THEN they pick up the pace discussing the Wii U.

Yeah but Wii was popular amongst non-gamers.
No real good games except Mario Galaxies and maybe Zelda and Metroid prime 3.
And even those were good DISPITE the gimmick controls.

Nobody denies that the Wii has been way more successful than either of its competitors. But really the reason Xbox has no Mario is because they have an entirely different group of consumers. What Mario is for Nintendo is Gears of War and Halo for Xbox360.

And as for the PS3 being overpriced and a disappointment, that's debateable. But no good games to play? That's ridiculous, sorry. Killzone and God Of War might not be for everyone but they are great games. And calling Uncharted no good is almost delusional :D I mean, come on, you don't honestly think those are crap games do you?

Hopefully not combined!

And Reggie doesn't really care about Nintendo, only making money.
If he would care about Nintendo and it's fa base he would have studied Nintendo before accepting his current job.
HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT VIRTUAL BOY!!!

Don't forget the first Ratchet and Clank Future, third was OK too, but the second can should MUST be forgotten.

Yeah, mariocaseman, it is FINANCIALLY the most successful console, probably in all of history, but they completely alienated the core gamer market that they thrived on up until the end of the N64. (I liked the Gamecube a lot, but most of the gamers I knew at the time said it was "uncool" and favored the blood and gore of the Xbox and fantastical RPGs of the PS2.) Wii was their first real movement outside of the core gamer market, probably because they realized that a lot of gamers thought the Gamecube was a child's toy, so they decided to stop listening to the violence-hungry core gamer group, and started targeting gamers' parents and grandparents and baby sisters. Since the Wii came out, I have never seen more regular people playing video games. But, they only thing people play is WiiSports because "The Bowling game is really fun". The Wii library is comprised of 80% GARBAGE, and that's because tons of cut-rate, low-life, third-party developers are trying to leech off of the success of the Wii by making crap like Carnival Games and Redneck Trailer Park, or whatever that game was called. Sure, we got Metroid Other M and Mario Galaxy, but that doesn't make up for the complete disaster that we call the Wii library.

In short, financial success does not equate to good games, nor goes it get you the respect of the gamers that supported your company from the beginning, like I have.

Skyward Sword.

Hope they don't fuck up again with the tech demo sorry game like wirh Wii Twilight Princess.

Gamecube version proofed that the gimmick controls were unnessary glue ons.

Try 99%

Gamecube was OK, but they fucked up with Mario Sunshine with the gimmick waterhose controls.

Nah, 99% is pretty harsh. 80% sounds more like it. But you have to admit that the games which are good on Wii and were made specifically for the system (Mad World) or ported with sginificant enhancements (Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition) were truly great and sometimes unique.

I bought a Wii at launch and an Xbox360 about half a year later. Now I have 12 Wii games and 97 Xbox360 games.....  In the end it was all worth it and if the Wii U suffers the same fate it will still have been worth it for me buying it. But these figures alone should give you a hint what I'm getting at :)
