Wii U
KaiserWAVE:
There were rumors prior to the press conference stating that they would name it simply the "Nintendo". Which I think would have been great. Sorta like, ok, this is who we are, this is what we are about.
But I can see the motivation and maybe even the need to reference to the original Wii. With the Wii they tapped into the vast market of casual and non gamers, who tried out the Wii and made it the success it was and still is. The core or serious gamers already read months in advance about the Wii and made their prorders or bought it at day one. But unfortunately these gamers are not the ones who made the Wii the success it is. That was due to the casual crowd. Now the new system is coming and again, just based on my own oppinion as a passionate gamer, I'm already highly interested and will follow the months to come with great interest. And if nothing unforseen happens to change my mind I'll buy it day one.
The majority of Wii owners (I own a Wii msyself, just to clarify I'm NOT in any way try to slam it) is not concerned about a new console. But when they read Wii U and then you tell them it's an upgrade to the Wii, they might at least be interested. Also in the last years a lot of households bought a HD-TV. So maybe it makes sense for them to upgrade and they see it in a different way than most of us. Kinda like a lot of people upgraded from a DVD player to BluRay.

I will just throw out there that I am a huge Wii U skeptic. I want so badly to believe in Nintendo, but they really need to stop trying to hard to alienate themselves from the PS3 and 360. It really puts a damper on third-party support. I really can't remember a good Wii game that wasn't made by Nintendo. (I'm sure that there are, but none come to mind at the moment.) I feel like the Wii U is going to be the same.
I don't doubt that it will be financially successful, though. The wide consumer market that was won over with the Wii is probably going to at least be curious about the Wii U. Plus, it's got the big touch screen for people who were a fan of Apple's rapidly growing iPad/iPhone gaming scene. I think Nintendo got a big market with the Wii, and they caught a glimpse of that market being lost to Apple. The Nintendo CEO has even been quoted in saying a few years after the Wii's release that their "biggest competitor as of right now is Apple." I honestly think that when Nintendo as a company got that mindset, that was when Nintendo lost sight of the core "gamers" market, and started exclusively going after non-gamer consumers of all ages.
Of course, I will probably end up buying one and hoping for the best, just as I did with the Wii... And the Atari Jaguar... :-X

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm most afraid of.
They do however seem to be pretty serious about third party and more mature games this time around. Batman Arkham City, Battlefield 3 and Assassin's Creed are real heavyweight franchises that, if done right on the system, could potentially not only sell on their own but also sell systems.
I do know what you mean and I share your fear. I just hope that both of us are wrong in the end :)

Me too to both of these points.
