Wii U

The Wii u is like if a Wii, a Ds, and a Ipad had a 3 way. I really hope they change the name.

I was specting to see the announce of GTA V in the system as I read some rumours about negotiations between Nintendo and Rockstar *SIGHT*
I like the idea of not needing a TV to play and the compatibility with the Wii accesoires but I'll wait to see the power of the system, what it can offer and the price. I have just read that it would probably be compatible with GC discs too, which would be great.
I'm quite dissapointed with the games for the last days of the Wii, only interested in Zelda SS. Didn't they say that there will be more important titles for Wii for this year? We'll see...

Yeah the new controller is nice addition, it opens new possibilities, both good and bad.
Examle of bad was on the first video on the site I linked. Imagine if we are forced to kill Zelda enemies like that. I PREFER TO PUSH A BUTTON!!!!
But imagine the new control pad control tablet as interactive map, or point at TV to "magically" see enemy's weak point, highlight cracks in wall, reveal pass through walls (ala lens of truth) or other secrets.
Or quick keys to weapons.
Maybe use to controll drones thru it's view point.

BUT NOT FOR THE ACTUAL FIGHTING, GAMECUBE BAD IS GOOD FOR THAT!!!

I thought "Wii" was a stupid name but I got accustomed to it and now I don't think about it anymore. I think it will be the same with the Wii U.

What was more troubling is that the press conference and the unveiling of the controller left me more confused than I was before :)

Like, they showed a guy playing a game that looked like New Super Mario Brothers, and then he switched the channel to watch tv and continued playing on the screen of the controller. That's a neat idea, but does it work with HD games as well? I kinda doubt it, but we'll se.

The controller basically had all the features of a 3DS, without the 3D effect of course, and the 3DS is quite expensive. So that makes me wonder how much will this controller alone cost? The techdemo (NintenBirds if you will ;) ) they showed to showcase the graphics power makes me think it is at least as powerful as PS3 and Xbox360. Add the new controller to that equation and imagine the price of the console...

The Golf game where they put the controller on the ground and you see the ball lying on the ground on the Wii U controller screen was nice but it feels very gimmicky. I don't know if I WANT to lay it on the ground not to mention they played the actual golf game with a Wiimote, which means two controllers to play the game.

The demo with the bamboo forest and you throwing shurikans from the controller was great, as was the new zapper/wii u controller combination for some kind of sniper techdemo. Even if a new Silent Scope or Sniper Elite is the only thing that spawns from that idea I will die a happy man :D

Big franchises like Battlefield 3, Assassin's Creed, Batman Arkham City are also an awesome addition. The question is if they can capitalize on the Wii U controller. Batman Arkham City and Battlefield 3 come out this October. The console will likely release around NEXT October. (It's just a guess of mine, they didn't specify a release date for the console other than 2012). So they have to bring something new to the table to make people buy a game that has been out for a year again on a new system. Best case scenario is they release the games as a kind of goty edition, with all the DLC that has been released so far and add Wii U controller specific exclusive elements. Worst case is they release the same game with just some gimmicky control for the new controller.

All in all, I will definitely buy it. Personally I buy a new Nintendo console mainly for the big Nintendo fanchises and the few games from other talented developers that are unique and only possible on Wii U with the new controller. The prospect of a new Zelda, Kirby, Metroid, Mario alone, is enough to lure me in. Thinking of the possibiliies is very exciting. But that was also the case with the Wii and for me personally the novelty wore off quickly and the truly innovative and awesome games were rare compared to the endless stream of shovelware and bullshit minigames compilations.
For multiplattfrom titles I think I will pretty much stick to PS3 and Xbox360, as I have grown pretty fond of achievements and trophies :) I know it's sad but I love it. Unless the games for Wii U have a very engaging feature or way to use the new controller.

lcvolt:
i think the controller is not as expensive as everyone says. i think it is a simple "input" "output" device , the processing part comes inside the console (which wasn't even shown, but seems to be like an enhanced wii). is a normal controller with a tactile screen and sooome basic features.
i estimate this thing to cost at much 120, and the console 150 ,and h ewhole bundle with a regular controller and a game for 300 or 320

the name sucks, i wish they shange it later to something that has the big N and not the generic W

Yeah but still better name would be nice.

Yeah they would make the controller dual screen using 3DS screens but bigger, so the controller could be used instead of 3DS, I might be willing to start playing DS games, as current DSs are too small for my hands.
That was too confusing let's try again:
They should make the 3DS XL that would have the shape of the Wii U controller, for better ergonomics.

They'd better do it atleast as powerfull as Xbox360/PS3 or serious players will skip it.

And if they upgrade the controller to 3DS XL I'd pay more.

Yes they should take real advance of the new control tablet, but not any wii sport like tech demos and call them games (unless they come free of charge, so ignoring them does cost anything  ;D).
They should concentrate on taking good advance of the control tablet.
Like I said before they should use it as additional controller without any stupid forced gimmicky uses.

Imagine using the controller to fly attack drones in Battlefield or Call of Duty  :o :o :o

Hope for the best fear for the worst, that's my motto in life.
