They do nothing to keep the system cool, infact they have the adverse reaction. The best way to keep it cool is to keep it ventilated and in a cool room.

Yes, the cooling fans draw energy from the 360 increasing power consumption and thus heating Xbox 360.
They also blow dust inside which accumulates inside blocking ventilation and thus again heating Xbox 360.

The STS is over the existing fan. It blasts the hot air out of the system. From what I can tell with the pictures I found the new 360s have some good ventilation on the left (or top) however the dvd rom drive is right there as well. There isn't any vents in the back.

Just buy a new slim 360. Those are the only version of the 360 to own. Very cool and power consumption is also pretty low.

Thats what I have. Got it last weekend after my original ELITE kicked the bucket with a recurring RROD (Arctic Silver didn't work any more)

The new system still blasts out a good amount of heat from the top vent.  strangely that is the ONLY fan in the system. just to the right of it there is a perforated area for air flow and to the left next to the DVD rom drive like i stated before is a vented area.

I decided against the STS cooling  fan and built a slightly elevated shelf with rubber bumpers to elevate the system about 1/2 an inch while 2 pc fans blow at the systems 2 main vent intake spots from a few inches away. The fans are on a toggle switch running off an old remote control car battery charger that puts out 12v.
