N64 VRU + mic question
Staf:
A few years ago I saw a Hey You, Pikachu! game cartridge by itself for $1 at a used game store and figured I could buy it and pick up the mic for it later on. I browse eBay and Amazon.com every once in a while looking for a good deal, but most of the time they are just the VRU unit for super cheap or the VRU + mic for a higher price or the VRU + mic + game for a still higher price. I found one that says it is the VRU + mic for about $15 on Amazon.com, but I was wondering what kind of mic it is. Would a standard microphone work if I bought just a super cheap VRU so I could play the game, or is it something special? I'd love to have the official setup, but I don't quite have the money to be spending on it at this point.

Alrighty, I ran a little experiment, and I'm really surprised by the results!
I tried the VRU with a couple different microphones, and they ALL worked! I'm actually beginning to think of not using the mic that came with the game, because it was probably crappy. Half the time, Pikachu didn't knew what I was saying. But, when I was using nicer mics, he understood be every time.
So go ahead and buy yourself a cheap VRU, because the microphone port seems to be universal to me. ;)
amarthar:
If the connector is a standard mini-jack then I guess any mic will work.

Thank you for this.
Been thinking on buying this.
Will buy CIB but save the mic in safe place so it does break, and use head set.

Go to radioshack, look for a 1/4" Male to 1/8" Female connector. Most Mic's (like the ones I have) are mini-jack, being the 0.135 inch width (or close to it). You need to buy the adapter. All together, the VRU: $1: Salvation Army, Headset: Free: Online Offer, Jack Adapter: $5: RadioShack.
Again, I prefer to use my "custom" mic more than the "original" as the "custom" mic is more of a headset instead of a mic on a stand.
