I thought the first two were connected.

Some time after the first game Zelda fell a sleep and Link had to go on to the second adventure to wake her.

Yes, that is true. I left that one out, because it's the only obvious sequel. (I mean, come on, it's called Zelda TWO. ;D)

Also, Minish Cap is supposed to be a direct prequel to Four Swords, because the games show the villain Vaati going from his original form as a member of the Minish race to a full-sized sorcerer who ends up getting killed by Link using the Four Sword, then Four Swords Adventures comes directly after that.

Other than that, most games have no discernible connections. Except maybe Phantom Hourglass coming after Windwaker? I can't exactly remember the setup of Hourglass, but I'm pretty sure the game starts you out as the same tunic-less Link from WW, and you find the same boat and you don't seem to be too surprised by it. I THINK.

Also, Link to the Past says on the back of the box that it stars the Link and Zelda predecessors to the NES games. But, before the release of Ocarina of Time, Miyamoto told Nintendo Power in an interview that the order of the games went OoT->Zelda->Zelda2->LttP.

This whole series is screwed up.

See what I mean, there is no distinguishable timeline. Sure, LOZ-AOL, OoT-MM, WW-PHG, Minish-FS-FSA go with each other, but it seems there is little or no connection between the whole series, which is why I am thinking each game/set is in their own little universe.
