Super Mario Sunshine MINIMUM

I am playing Super Mario Sunshine for the 1st time in like 9 years, I only beat it once.  What is the Minimum number of sprites or suns (what the hell are these things?) that I need to collect to access the final boss?  I do not care how many there are in the game, just the minimum to beat it.  Thank you.

The requirement for getting into Bowser's lair is getting the 7th shine sprite in each of the seven stages. So I think minimum is 49.

No there are 8 per stage + secret ones totalling 120.

Nope, 7th star of each world is the fake mario, which you must beat in each world to open new ones.

It's been so long time since last play that I didn't remember, so I checked Gamespot boards, and someone said that the minimum was 49.

I don't see him in any worlds!  He is always running around the damn island.  Are you pulling this from memory, or from a website?  I'm playing right now.  I have 18 stars so far.
