--- Quote from: KaiserWAVE on May 07, 2011, 11:23:34 AM ---Btw, I got a question comradesnarky or in fact anyone with a Region B or codefree Bluray of Escape From New York could answer. I'm a huge John Carpenter fan and most of his well known movies have been released in Germany but half of them is really abysmal in quality. I got Halloween, The Thing and Big Trouble In Little China and they all look great. Well worth it. Especially Big Trouble In Little China, awesome campy movie and incredibly colorful. The Fog, Escape from New York and John Carpenter's Vampires have been released in Germany but they look horrible. I don't even think they had a HD master, it really looks like an upconverted DVD (and a bad one at that, real bad). comradesnarky mentioned Escape From New York as a must have so I was wondering if he could say anything about the quality? In fact, if anyone from any European country could point me to a good Bluray of any of these three movies (or other Carpenter movies that I didn't list here) or someone from the US who could confirm that there's a region free Bluray release, please come forth :) --- End quote --- Well I mentioned I hadn't seen a Blu-Ray copy of it. I just pimp the movie out wherever I can. ;D I was just saying the DVD looks bad, but I'm sure the Blu-Ray is a step up. I know that there was a US Escape Blu-Ray released recently that was apparently much better than the DVD. I do know about the European release, and I've seen captures from it. It looks like garbage. The problem with a lot of Euro Blu-Rays is that they take the 2k masters that were created for the DVDs, so they really don't capture anything of the Blu-Ray format. That goes for Pulp Fiction and a few other sought after movies that aren't on Blu-Ray. In most cases it's best to seek out an American copy, if you can, because they typically go back to the negative and create a new transfer, or at least an interpositive. Really, Escape is never going to look great. It was a low budget film and it was shot at night. I've read that the American Blu-Ray has excellent color, and is a very film accurate transfer. I've been trying to come across a copy, but no success yet. |
