Iinstall Paint.net, and started to experimenting with it.
Noticed that it has that same annoying flaw feature of blending neighboring colors, ie I drew red line on blue back ground and instead of drawing the edges cleanly it makes the edges with shades of purple and violet.

Can the autoblend be turned off to keep the edges sharp?

I tried that, it was even more annoying. When I tried to draw a line I didn't know how!  ;D

Look at the third bar from the top. On the right there should be a beaker filled with a green liquid. Click it to turn off blending.

Also look into using layers (ctrl shift n) to write over stuff seperately from the main image.

Thanks! Will see if that helps.

Nope, but next to it was anti-aliasing and turning that off solved the problem, so thank you for getting me to the right track.  :)
