So Ive got like 3 spare Model 1 Genesis' and a spare Model 2 Genesis and Ive been wanting to give the region mod a try for a while now and figured now would be a good time. Dont want to use my Game Genie everytime I want to play Golden Axe III anymore.  :)

Ive got everyhting I need to get the job done accept a good reliable walkthrough to do so. Ive looked around and found a good tutorial on MMMonkey mods, but their tutorial is for a PAL console and there seems to be some small differenced like cutting traces that dont appear on my NTSC console. That or I find tutorials that are just for the JAP/Eng switch and I figure if Im going to mod my Genesis I might aswell do the 50/60Hz while Im at it. Does anyone know a good tutorial for both Model 1 & 2 Genesis that I could use or has anyone here done this thmeselves and can point me in the right direction?

Any help would be much appreciated!

If i were you BC, i would only mod the model 1's. They're pretty easy to do in any region. And if your ok with electronics, try to suss out the switchless mod, giving all that switchy goodness without showing any actual switches.

Im working on the Model 1 right now and Im thinking the 50/60Hz switch is pretty much pointless for me so Im just gonna go with the Jap/Eng switch which is looking pretty damn easy. Well see how it turn out.

SUCCESS!! That was pretty damn easy. Im still gonna give the Model 2 a try sometime soon. Im up for the challenge and its good practice. Might have to give that S-Video mod a try sometime. Fuck coax cables! ;)

Heres the Genesis in action running Golden Axe III (the whole reason I did this mod):

And heres where I mounted the throw switch. Seemed like the most practical place to put it:

No more Game Genie region lock out code for me and now Im totally converting my second copy of Golden Axe III to a Red Template version!;D

Composite cables are pretty cheap...

s-video is better though

You could use an RGB/Scart cable through a Scart to Component converter. It gives a far superior picture quality to S-video and you would'nt have to mess about modding the Genny. Downside is buying a scart lead and converter though.

Few questions:
1: So after these modifications it runs all games from all regions flawlessly , no exeptions, right?
2: How high percentage of the games turn into English after the language switch mod?
3: Japanese carts are bit bigger than EU and US, so using Jap MD would eliminate the need of largening the cart opening?
4: Will RGB-scart + component converter give better picture quality than RGB-scart alone?
5: Will the mods allow use of MCD and 32-X games from all regions aswell?

@Arseen and sheep

1: There are a few PAL games that were optimized at 50hz and so have a glitch or two at 60hz so for 100% flawless, you need a text switch and a 'hz' switch. With those in place, everything runs.

2: Multi region released stuff tends to have both languages on the cart and adjusts to the switch. JP only games stay JP text only. Streets Of Rage for instance, becomes Bare Knuckle and has JP text.

3: Yes

4: Not really. But my TV (Samsung) handles the signal better through the composite connection than the upscaled Scart one.

5: MCD no. Still needs a CDX (or similar) or multi-bios to work. I use a Megacart for that purpose. It boots the Mega CD to any region depending what button you hold down on start up. Also is a flashcart and allows flashing from cd's in the Mega CD itself, if your into that sort of thing. 32X is ok for some games but needs a similar 'hz' selector to the MD for proper compatibility.

Megacart : http://products.genny4ever.net/megacart_v1x.html
Not sure if they still make these.

RGB to Component converter : http://www.lektropacks.co.uk/view_product_standard.php?department=239&product=91&sub1=239&show=239
One little problem is that these dont have a sound input.

MK1 MD's and MS's use the same RGB scart lead. The converter does'nt respond well to the MS signal though, i think its to do with the resolution (dont quote me on that). SNES/Saturn/Neo GEo/Dreamcast/Jaguar look very nice through it though
