This is where you get odd blurring or shimmering around moving objects on screen. Plasma doesn't suffer from that because it's capable of updating much more quickly than 120hz or even 240hz. Don't take this as a knock against lcd/led, because each form of display has it's distinct advantages.

Since I don't care for these debates all I will add is that the 120/240Hz deal is a misnomer. LCDs do not have refresh rates. You're right, it's just creating a buffer frame to give the set time to draw the next, actual, frame to reduce blur. It kind of works in that it reduces blur. But like you said, it increases artifacting around moving objects. I found that more irritating than the blur. Though I hear this is less of a problem in newer sets. I haven't shopped for one for a while. In the end it's not really drawing each frame any faster like the higher refresh rate might suggest. Instead, look at the pixel response time. That has more to do with motion blur than the made up refresh rate.

I just wanted to make sure everyone knew this.

What's even funnier is that this whole '120/240hz' vs '600hz' on lcd/led vs plasma is all a 'my ------ is bigger than your ------' battle. LCD was being perceived at being inferior to plasma because of the plasma's ability to update quicker, resulting in less 'vapour trail' effects from moving objects. Even though the vapour trail effect has largely disappeared with the most current 60hz lcd tvs, it was still a perceived weakness, so they stamped the 120hz stat on the boxes and in the technology to make it look better than plasma by the numbers. Plasma countered with 480hz, followed by 600hz. So basically it's all a oneupmanship contest between the techs. I use a 60hz tv as my monitor, and it looks pretty fine to me. I game on a plasma, but on occassion when the wife kicks me off my big tv, I'll game on the smaller lcd. No issues.

Oh and Polygon, yes the artifacting has improved but still noticeable. 120hz still has life to it let alone 240. It's a numbers game. Nothing more.
