Thought I start a new thread as I post my few PS1 original covers....

One question...
The first one I posted(Time Crisis 1)... Why is the front cover labeled "cd case manual cover" and why is the rear insert labeled "Cd case insert"? Wouldn't it be clearer if they would be labeled "front cover insert" and "back cover insert" or something like that?

Just a suggestion...

Now back to scanning.... :)

Regards

I was trying to accomplsh 2 things. Keep uniformity with the Dreamcast CD games and ensure that people can easily tell the cover is for the CD case.
One problem is, the website displays things alphabetically, so I added 'CD' to the description to keep everything together and uniform. Without the 'CD' the website mixes the DVD stuff with the CD stuff, and it just didn't look good. (to me)

I was originally calling the front 'CD Front Insert' - however, when I started to scan the multi-disc paks I realized that they have a front & rear insert plus manual(s).
Eventaully we will have the manuals available as .pdf files like the N64 section.
On most of the U.S. games, the manual is the front insert.
I think its important to make the front cover of the manual available to those who want to download it to create a custom DVD cover.
------------------
I have questions for you, as I am only familiar with the U.S. games.

Is the front cover an insert? or is it the front cover of the manual?

The U.S. single disc games come in a completely clear CD case. They have a rear insert (back cover) w/inlay (picture on the back of the rear insert which displays under the disc). The front cover holds the instruction manual and the manual cover is also the front cover.
For example:

Game Case Front - actually the instruction manual

Inside - back of manual and disc holder

Disc removed - back of manual and rear insert inlay

Rear of case - rear insert

The U.S. multi-disc cases usually have a front insert w/inlay - then instruction manual(s) - then game discs - then a rear insert w/inlay.
For example:

Multi-disc game front (front iinsert)

Inside - Front Insert Inlay & game manual

Inside - Second game manual - Rear insert Inlay

Rear of case - rear Insert

I am open to any ideas as to how to keep uniformity in the naming. If the PAL cases are put together differently, let me know.

Basically my idea was:

Single Disc games:                        Multi-disc games:
Manual Cover                               Manual Cover(s)
Rear Insert Inlay                           Front Insert
Rear Insert                                  Front Insert Inlay
Manual (to be added later)            Rear Insert Inlay
                                                 Rear Insert
                                                 Manual(s) (to be added later)

Open for suggestions before we get too many uploaded.

P.S. Check out Grandia, I used your labels, let me know what you think.

Aaaaaaaaahhh now I understand....

It's just that in PAL covers over here in austria it's completely different...

It's like that:
The cd case is clear but has black trays in it.

The front cover is just a piece of paper with the same artwork on it as the front of the manual but it's seperate!
The back of the front insert is just plain white....
Then there is the manual lying inside the box on top off the cd...
The Cd itself is fixed in a black tray...
The rear insert is white on the inside(you don't see this because of the black tray) and has the back artwork on the back... :)

That's all so artistically the PAL covers are less interesting....

That makes the PAL PS1 cases more like the music CD cases we have here, they have a black insert in them.

Well, we can change the description to anything, I just want to be uniform.

Suggestions?

Additional to wshbrngr's comments .....

I think I started the naming ball rolling because I didn't like those DVD Dreamcast covers appearing in front of an 100% original cover. And CD cases are the ONLY original over where PS1 & Dreamcast games are concerned. As far as I'm concerned ... for the sake of correctness the site should be named in the following way .....

CD Case Front / Rear / Inlay = US version of game
CD Case - AU etc followed by Front / Rear etc = Other region original case art
Cutom DVD Cover = US DVD cover
Custom DVD Cover - AU etc = other region DVD cover
Disc Label = US
Disc Label - AU etc = other region

Similar setup for N64 games. Take a look at Mario Kart 64 to see it in action.

What it does is put US original versions at the top with other regions following. And US versions are the most popular so it makes sense to make it easier to get that without more mouseclicks. Small savings I know but if you look at a number of covers the savings get bigger and bigger. And for me ... being oriented toward originals ... it is truer to the artwork that came with the games.

Here is my first PS1 cover.

Castlevania: Symphony of The Night (European PAL Boxart)

http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/Dante_Ali.retail.ps1_castlevania-front_eu.jpg Front

The European version came in a Double CD Jewel Case. The spines are 76 pixels in width and both the front and back are 1773x1383. Hopefully these dimensions are correct.

I'm with TheValeman regarding the naming of the covers....

One question would be... If we upload japanese originals would they be before or after the US originals?

To me always the jap versions are the originalst originals.... but not the most common!

Thoughts?

This site is English so Japanese games would be classed the same as Au/EU eg,

CD Case - Japan or
Cover - Japan

Have a look at Mario Kart 64 where we have the Japan cover for a classic example.   ;D

How about Alphabetical  lol.

For example:

Australia/NewZealand
Austria
Brazil
Europe
Japan
USA

(yes I am only being flippant, but I love to stir the pot...)

Or...How about the distance from the South Pole...

Or...How about......Actually, whatever the Valeman wants...Seems Logical to me the way it's been setup. Although I will pretty much disagree with anyone who says that the standard CD cases used by the US for PS1 and DC games look better than the double width version of Europe and Australia/NZ.  Or Jap Saturn compared to US or EU saturn. Or Pal Mega CD (Standard double CD cases) as compared to Sega CD (Better custom games cases). CD cases are however more pragmatic for cover making on this site as the special cases are...well... rare to impossible to get...How did I drift right of the course here...next I'll start doing movie reviews..Shutting up now :)
No Metroid on N64, What was Nintendo thinking? ;)

The black colors of this one are not that great but the cover was really battered...

That's OK, I still like you anyways...   :)
