Im looking to pick up a TG16 but dont know a whole lot about it and was hoping I could get a bit of help.

Theres a TG16 im thinking of picking up with 17 games, 2 controllers and all the hook ups. But Im thinking at some point Id like to pick up some of the CD games aswell which require the CD add-on. Does anyone know if the japanese NEC Duo has any regional lockout to it because It might be more wise for me to keep a look out for one of those instead of getting a TG16 and then later trying to find a CD add-on.

Thanks.

A TurboGrafx 16 with 2 controllers.  Do they have the controller adapter?  Becuase you will only be able to hook 1 controller to the system  :D

  • Think off-center.
Cant go wrong with a Turbo Duo. Still expensive but not as expensive as the two separate. Plus a lot of the games are cheap just a small amount are worth crazy money. (i just picked one up last week ;D )

Jup you should go for a Duo.

CD games are always region free (the only thing you'll ever need is Arcade Card Duo for some of the ram hungry games) but for Hu Card games you need a hardware mod and a converter.

Nontheless the Duo is the most versatile machine.

Ditto Tik.  :)

For 2 to 5 pads, you need a multitap. Biggest issue is the CD drives are not particularly reliable and can be a real pain to use (as in stuff not loading, music tracks skipping etc). If you can solder though, fixing them is not too much of a task (caps change or new laser) and if your lucky, the previous owner might have allready done it. I have a JP Duo-R with the arcade card and it runs all CD's i have come across. A Tennokoe Bank data backup card (is there a U.S version?) would be usefull if your going to buy RPG's as the units RAM can fill fairly quickly.

I thought you daisy chained the TBG16 controllers? Or am I thinking of the 3DO?

As Grunble said you'd have to buy a multi tap to connect a second controller. The daisy chaining the controllers is the 3DO and CDi.

@ tik:
Is modding the hardware to play HuCards on a TurboGrafx -16 really necessary? I always thought that to play HuCards on a TurboGrafx-16 you just need a converter and modding the hardware is only necessary if you want to play Turbo Chips (US games) on a PC-Engine?

I thoguht it was like this

TurboGrafx 16 ---> Japanese games ---> converter needed
PC Engine       ---> US Games          ---> converter and modding the hardware needed

Jup you're absolutely right. It is a pretty easy mod though.

So I ended up going with this:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190482048057&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I told the seller Id take it if he were to remove the shipping charge so I picked it up for $250. A nice little collection to get me started. Was this a good deal?

Doom's kinda like some kinda bizarro anti-collector or something. I remember him saying once that he hoped he'd never have more than 200 games.

Neutopia and Splatterhouse were the winners for me. There are a few in there I couldnt care about but the majority of them seem to be good titles. Looks like Ill also have have about 7 TG16 covers to contribute once they come in! ;D

Nice catch. Hope you enjoy it.

If by accident the games you couldn't care about are Bonk's Adventure, Galaga 90 and especially Alien Crush you know where to find me ;)
