NES or SNES controllers to NGC controller port converters - do they work?

As the NES adapter is not good enough (no select) I'll skip it, but will definitely order few of the SNES adapters.

the NES one is a great solution for playing original Gameboy games as most don't use Select for much of anything, and it is amusing to be able to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles with an NES pad ::)

JewWario recommended these for USB. I was just gonna buy a third SNES controller and gut it, but this looks like a much better option :)
