well, the state of michigan has a "Lemon Law" meaning that if you buy something and it ends up being a dud, you can return it and get your money back. This law has helped me in exchanging numerous defective games,

I've never really had a problem buying a defective game used, saved for a copy of Crazy Taxi on the Dreamcast. I already zone in on the higher quality cases when buying older games used, I just have to hope the clerk gives me a non-defective disc. By the way, does anyone else hate when they buy a game with an original case, and they give you the "greatest hits" version of the disc. That sort of thing always annoyed me.

But yeah, it's always a gamble buying older games used. Garage sales are no better, but a lot cheaper. So far my SNES collection is being obtained via the internet and handmedowns.

I did return them today on my way home, still very annoying. The games themselves looked okay when I got them (what I didn't notice where the scratches on the label side of the disc because that's not usually something anyone pays attention to when they pick up games). I rarely have trouble with buying games used (6 games I've ever bought used didn't work, 4 of them being Gamecube games from GameStop), it just sucks when you get a game you want for a good price to find out it doesn't work.

TC - come cross one of the bridges - we in Bellevue have a couple Gamestops (Belleuve Square and Crossroads), and there is a Play-n-trade in Kirkland. I have only had to return two games in 10 years.
I'd love to, I go to school in Redmond, just don't really have the time or will to go all the way out there just to shop at Play-n-Trade.

I have friends that have worked at GameStop's in different places before, and most stores do have a policy where they are supposed to at least "look" at the condition of the game before taking it for a trade-in and if it's not good enough, then they have to send it in to be resurfaced. Sadly no store I know of actually does it because the clerks just don't care.

Actually a US citizen, but the US playstation id's look like crap :(

optical discs should have come in caddies that would have allowed you to use it with out handling the disc itself, while at the same time protecting the disc.

Nah, I am talking about a system where the entire disc is protected from the elements, no case to loose unless they put the disc+caddy in a case. You put the disc+caddy into the machine, the machine extracts the disc and gives you back the caddy.

Too expensive to make. The whole allure of cds for companies is that they're extremely cheap to manufacture. literally pennies per disc.
