Again, a very good scan Sebastian.  A little better than mine I think.  Well, here are the remaining covers I have as promised.

Yours don't look bad at all! :)

And don't forget you've done maybe twenty covers in the time I've done two...  ;D

Regards

P.S. Could you give a link to the full version of let's say vanishing point? I'd like to try tomorrow if it's really easy to change the normal spine/back to the PAL dreamcast cases spine/back.... I fear not but the fun is trying isn't it?  ;)

Tiktektak.

SOME ADVICE ON WHAT I HAVE DONE TO HELP YOU IN CONVERTING BACK TO PAL DC CASES.

What I have done with the rear covers is simply digitaly cut off the spine and filled the top and bottom white corners with the clone tool.

Hope this helps.

Ok so I tried rePALing(I created a word jipiehhhhhh ;D ) the vanishing point cover back!
It went ok besides the problems that the size of my back covers and the australian ones are slightly different and that the colors differ a little bit too...
Ah yes and I had to cut a little off the spine so it fitted and so the dreamcast logo on the spine is now nearer the upper end and I didn't manage to find the exactly same wordart for the game name sooo... I don't know. It's good enough for me but for the coverproject I don't know! :)
Here's it:

The file itself for download(it's not converted down cause the original is smaller then 1,5meg):

What do you say? Not near perfect....  :(

Ping Tiktektak.

I think you have done a very good job on remaking the cover into a PAL standard DC cover.

Just some points on the size of the covers I am uploading.  The Australian DC case is identical to the Euro ones, right down to the Euro ratings logo which had an Aussie ratings sticker placed over it.  The size difference is because I have resized the rear to fit a standard CD Jewel case (1616x1384 pixels).  I round everything off to the nearest 8 pixels to reduce artifacts in the Jpeg compression (or maybe I am just kidding myself and it doesnt matter at all if I round them off).  These are from my measurements.

The inlay for the rear of the PAL DC case is slightly different in proportions (but only slightly...maybe 2-3%

But in the end.  Your remake of the cover is OK for me too. If only replacement PAL cases could be found :(

What do we want to be hosted on the site?

PAL covers in their original format
PAL covers with thin spines to enable users to use standard CD cases

or both of the above. Realistically users aren't going to be able to obtain replacement DC cases so the thin spine cover is the one that is going to get a lot of attention. But that doesn't mean we should preserve the original form either right?

  • ...and that's the bottom line
I'd say the thin spines are the way to go. You could replace PAL DC cases by buying used DC games which would work if you just want to replace 1 to let's say 3 or 4 games. But If someone buys a used Dreamcast with a bunch of loose games this option would be pretty tiresome and expensive whereas CD cases are dirt cheap, available everywhere, and usually come in large quatities.

Hmm, I'd suggest that we store the PAL covers in their original format on the ftp as a kind of backup and give a download link when someone requests one of them. Additionally people who create PAL covers in their original format could store them on their PCs as well.

I don't know, is this practicable? Is there equal or greater demand for the original format?

Hey guys....

I think you're right about the case situation.... I'd love to store my PAL DC Games in original boxes because they're really beautiful....
But 3 Euro per case(bought new sports games on ebay) is as cheap as it gets I fear....

I think it's sad but true that normal cd cases are the way to go... :( Storing the PAL versions on a on demand basis is maybe a good idea but a little complicated because only few people have access to the ftp and always asking them to give links to the PAL versions will also be a bit annoying for them I think...

So I'd say

for the price we should go for standard cd cases but for the heart we should go for the original style... ;D

As I mentioned above it's possible to rePAL cases... It's not easy but for me it's good enough if I get some cd covers and convert them back to the old style... I dunno if there's demand for original covers beside me so maybe it's an easy one...

I am not sure why both cannot be available (unless storage space in the problem).

My thought has always been to make the ORIGINAL covers available first and then to have modified covers available for those that want them.
I would think that the Original PAL style (thick spine) cover would be the first cover listed (as original) and the modified CD style (thin spine) would simply be listed as another cover available. The thick spine would probably be nice for those that want to use the short, thick DVD cases for their games.

For example, I have already discussed w/Snowcone about having the original CD style covers for the PS1 availavle, as well as the modified DVD case covers. He did not seem to think it was a problem.

I point to PS1 Castlevania: symphony of the night as an example - it has 4 custom DVD covers and no original CD cover (yet)
Hopefully someone will upload the original and it will be posted.

To me it makes things a lot easier.... the person that has the PAL cover does not have to do any conversion unless they want to. They can simply upload the original and someone who prefers the thin spine can download it and convert it (and upload) it.

That is what I plan to do with all the PS1 covers I have. Upload them as CD covers. If anyone has the game and wants a DVD cover, he is more than welcome to get my original and convert it. I would simply ask them to upload their DVD cover to make it available to others who might not be so artistically inclined.

This is just another way for people who might not have any covers or cash to contribute to the site and make it better.

Hello!

EDIT: I found a way to get my pal DC cases for 1,70 Euro per case via an extremly reasonable ebay seller I talked about on top of my post! He sold me 40 sports/other games and when I talked to him I could convince him to send them cheap from holland! :) I think that's a reasonable price.... More then ever because I can sell the DC games with instructions for 1 euro per game at the second hand shop in austria(money point).... That means I pay 68 for the games + cases sell the games for 40 = 28 Euros for 40 cases....  ;D That's good enough for me....

@wshbrngr
I've got exactly the same oppinion... Now that I now a way to get some cases cheap I think original art firstly and then other covers are the way to go....

@all
I'll scan all the 4 games(each I bought 10 times ;) ) I get before I sell them for sure!
