I have been wondering what people think of this. My Phoenix Wright 1 case is a bit gunky, and I want to replace the cover sheet.

Does anyone feel that a game isn't the real thing once you've replaced the cover? This might sound awkward, but I am a collector, so games being in good condition is important to me.

I have a few covers that were pretty messed up when I bought them. I'm reluctant to replace them, but once I get a better printer they'll be replaced in an instant.

Well.. The fact this site is here shows that most people don't necessarily feel that way.

I see were you are coming from, and if I could have all my my collection in the original covers, trust me I WOULD (I'm sure most people feel this way).

In my case however most of my games have been converted to new covers. The bulk of my collection is Sega (CD, Saturn & Dreamcast) and 3DO. Since it's very hard to find games in original, good condition cases I started casing some of them in DVD and then my OCD took over. In the interest of parity, I cases all of the above in DVD cases and stored the original cases in boxes.

P.S. Thanks for the post I-Pwn-Tetris. It's an interesting topic that I'm sure most of us collectors have had a debate with at one time or another. Kudos to you :)

Yes, but it feels better than an almost ruined cover or, god forbid, plain case.

I've always been one to just inherit games and many times with no cases or original artwork. Does it take away from the "purity"....in my situation i dont think so especially when they are well done like @thecoverproject.net  ::). And to true collectors i would assume it would matter especially when buying selling and trading.

I kind of jumped to the conclusion that since its my collection, and no one else's, that I don't really care if I replace my cover. Considering I have the manual and game, I'm not that concerned. Plus its different in our age.

For example, with NES, SNES, N64, etc. the box is printed with special artwork, meaning that a box is printed for a game specifically. With a DS game on the other hand (or PS2, 360, etc.), they take a completely random case, insert the artwork, and then put in the manual and game. I would probably not be cool with replacing a manual with a printed one of the internet, but a case or the artwork is so simple and easy to replace, that I am cool with it.

Plus I plan to get a new copy of Phoenix Wright 1, and keep it sealed just to have a second copy around (yes, I am a bit nuts lol)

Thanks for the speedy replies. I am new to the site, and am loving it. I am about to go down to my university copying store (which is thankfully open 24/7) and print off the Phoenix Wright 1 artwork. I'll post back how it goes.

Thanks!

Ya I just got into collecting. It's pretty hard, especially that I don't work. Nonetheless, just got a PS2, and am loving it. And Phoenix Wright 1 is my favorite game on the DS, and the series is easily one of my favorites. Plus the prices of the game are going up, so I want to get a sealed copy soon before it takes off into the hundreds.

Btw, is there a way you can track posts on this site. I ask because you replied really quickly

nice, mega man is a great series. unfortunately, i have no working nes, so my favorites (mega man 2 and 3) are limited to emulators and virtual console. picking up extra copies of a game isn't too bad. I can snag a copy of Phoenix Wright 1 for $40, which is only 10 bucks higher than it originally sold for.

I would rather damage a copy cover than the actual.  Thats why mine are all stored away.  Fading from sunlight, rips and tears from excessive opening and shutting the case, accidentally dropping some kind of sticky or liquid onto the case are all good enough reasons for me to store my original covers in a box and use the custom prints

Sorry, meant to answer this one last night. You can click the "Show unread posts since last visit" and "Show new replies to your posts" links at the top of the page. My time browsing the site is generally just reading every single post that comes up, which is generally not much on an average day.

Back to the main topic of this post.. I say negative to that. The day I become rich is the day that I will start getting everything "complete". Until that day, I will be content with getting a 2 dollar disc only version of a game and making my own custom cover to add it to my collection.

Also, having plastic shell covers for systems that had cardboard boxes looks much more complete and amazing.

To the latest poster: Yeah, I agree with you.

My situation is not even that bad. I have the original case, manual and game, just the cover that's bad. I was planning to go to my local copying store, but I found out that they have a ton of different types of papers to print on. So I'm going to go back later today and bring the original damaged cover art, and try to match it with a type of material similar to the original cover art.

That's not even necessary at all. You aren't going to be able to tell how THICK the insert is if it's sitting on your shelf. Most people don't realize how much thickness actually varies among say, DVDs and ps2 games.
