Hey, everybody. Just came by to say that I'm not dead. Of course, talk is cheap, so I brought along a cover for Freelancer. Both original scans and my template edit. Man, Freelancer was so awesome. Unfortunately, I forgot to save the links, so you'll have to wait until it's on the main site.

Also, something's really puzzling me. I didn't scan this myself (in the US it didn't come in a DVD case anyway), and I have no clue what region it came from. Usually I can tell by the ratings system, but there are no ratings anywhere on the original scan. And it's all in English. What country has no video game ratings system but speaks English? I know it's not the US, Canada, UK, or Australia.

Tribes: Vengeance, easily the most underrated game of recent years.

Okay, this one I'm really proud of.

At first I was having a lot of trouble. I've long since lost the box for this game and don't have a scanner anyway. But no site around these here intertubes had any high-res scans!  Or indeed, any scans at all. I finally found an awful, dusty, scrached and bent and misaligned 72dpi scan of the German boxart (from cdcovers.cc, the most tragic failure of a site in the entire cover scene), and resolved to work on it until it was something usable.

After a couple hours, I realized that it wasn't gonna happen. So I threw it all out and despaired. Then I thought to myself, "Self, you dumbass. Why don't you go to Vivendi's web site and download the fansite kit. It might have boxart, or you can cobble something together yourself out of promo screenshots since T:V's boxart sucked anyway."

And so I did. And I opened up the huge zip file to find perfect original cover art. Not scanned from a printout, but original.

Then I opened it up and found it was 72dpi. I was about ready to break something.

So I looked through the zip some more and found the original, full-size front box art, without the logos or anything. Just the art alone. I grab that, build the back and spine out of other promo stuff, and throw the ESA's template on it. Bam. A full-size box art that never saw a scanner.

From now on, whenever I draw a blank at something, I'm going to go download the fansite kit.

Without further ado:

The original fansite kit is here, if anyone else who has this game (all two of you, at best) wants to put together something better:

Also, since I'm on a roll, Jedi Knight II.
http://www.thecoverproject.net/uploads/The%20Warlock.custom.win_jedi_knight_ii_jedi_outcast_final.jpg

Front cover came from an excellent scan of the front of the box that I found somewhere.
Back cover and spine came from a shitty scan of the Xbox version (I hacked out all references to the Xbox, of course).

Pretty typical.

Hey, does anyone have a Starcraft cover anywhere? Custom, stock, whatever, I just figured it would be pretty easy to find but there sure isn't one here.

Oh, and I'm just about done with all my PC games (barring a few really old ones that I don't think I'll be able to find art for). I guess I'll do Dreamcast covers next.

I've added your PC covers. I labeled the Freelnacer covers as US covers. Since they had no indication what region they're from, the text was all english and on this site the US covers are the default covers, I thought it would be the best solution to that "problem". If that's ok with you?

You might want to add an "unknown region" category, but as long as people can find and download it I don't much care either way.

I do know that it's not the US cover, though. The US version was never in a DVD case and didn't have the "A Universe Of Possibilites" subtitle, and would have had the T for Teen ESRB rating on there somewhere.

Since it's a custom cover anyway I guess the missing rating and the different cover art are neglectable as long as the cover looks good, and quite frankly, the cover rocks! :)

I meant the original scan I uploaded, too.

I always upload original scans (if I have them, anyway) along with my covers, because I'm more than aware that some people don't like my template.

Of course, half my covers need to be hacked out of promo art or covers from other consoles, so I don't always have originals to upload.

EDIT: On a sidenote, somebody really ought to remove the NTSC/PAL crap from the PC covers. Those are TV formats; PCs don't use either.

Good to see you're not gone.... Seems like your the one and only PC cover maker around which makes you very "important".....
I love diversity but just have no time for PC stuff unfortunately.... Got too much to do with my other consoles and their covers....

short version: Five covers uploaded.
Black & White
Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project
Starcraft: Brood War
Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition
X2 The Threat

long version:
Okay, I generally like to talk about each cover I do, just so others can learn from my mistakes.

So I finally borrowed somebody's scanner and scanned in a bunch of stuff I had lying around. First up was the box for Black & White. Now, I got this game from Goodwill, so the box was crappy when I got it, and it has been sitting in my closet for about a year now, which certainly didn't help anything. What I'm saying is that I had a lot of work to do to clean it up. Man, this site has really improved my Photoshop skills.

That said, I think it came out really well. There was a cool-looking embossing on the box that the scan picked up really well. I also like what I did with the spine.

I can upload raw scans if anyone wants to take a whack at it without my template, but I'm warning you that these scans are VERY raw.

Moving on: Duke Nukem Manhattan Project is awesome. It's another one I grabbed from Goodwill for like $3 when I found out that they had some old games. All I had was the jewel case, and the front art got stretched a bit, for which I apologize. Still, all told I think it came out well.

Warcraft II was partially hacked out of the PS1 boxart that Exist2Inspire uploaded. Many thanks. I put on the Battle.net logo and completely redid the back. It looks nice; I'm proud of it.

I found scans for Starcraft: Brood War from somebody on the Internet and hacked out a cover. I would have prefered box scans of the original Starcraft, but beggars can't be choosers. I just put both discs in the Brood War case.

X2: The Threat was kind of troubling. I had a really nice front cover scan to work from, and I got the spine art from the official fansite kit. The back was another matter entirely. I couldn't find decent scans for it anywhere, and I'd long since lost everything but the discs myself. (In fact, I think I got the game used, back when EBStop still sold used PC games). So I ended up "garbage picking" and grabbed a low-res scan from MobyGames or somewhere similar. I might go back and redo it later with custom artwork and everything. Also, pigs might fly and Leonard Peltier might get elected President. I have X3 Reunion now and don't really care about X2 anymore, and I'm a bit burned out after all these covers.

I also did a cover for Red Alert 2, but it was based on scans from cdcovers.cc (garbage picking out of desperation again), and it's downright embarrassingly low quality, so I'm not going to upload it.

Final note: that's it for PC covers from me. I currently have four games that don't have covers:
Red Alert 2 (the crappy one doesn't count)
the original Command & Conquer
Warcraft 1
Dune 2000.

I have no scans or anything at all to work from for any of these, and to be honest I don't care about the old DOS games all that much. Still, if anyone has high-res scans for any of those four, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm going to start doing Dreamcast covers next (and believe me, I've got a whole bunch to do). I'm also going to make a good cover for Chrono Cross, because the one that's up here already sucks, and I'd like to make a DS case for my shiny new EZFlash5. Then you probably won't hear from me nearly as often.

Also, I've got a few pet peeves with some of the low-quality Dreamcast covers that certain users have uploaded, and I'm going to post an advice thread on how to properly use the main Dreamcast template.

I'm working on several other pc covers right now and I was wondering. Does any body have the games for windows template only modified for a standard sized dvd case? All I can do is shrink the current one down to the right size like I do with the rest of the spine. I personaly don't think it looks bad at all but it would still be nice. Also for those who didn't know their is a new version of this they are using on games that support the new windows live feature. It looks exactly the same except on the far right it has live written just under the pcdvd or pccd. It looks like the same live logo they put on the xbox 360 games.
