Hi All,
I would really like to use the covers that are provided here for my project, how do I go about it? Is it freely licensed? I don't want to steal a community's work.

A bit info for my project:
It's a video game website for players to find other players, really light on the social networking side, more into finding other players side. The site will be really granular in its ability to search, examples:

a gamer adds a game of Street Fighter, the gamer would also be able to specify what character he/she is playing. So other people who would like to challenge is Ryu or Blanka, they'd be able to search just that. This would apply for other games too, Modern Warfare gamer, would be able to define his primary weapons, secondary, classes etc.

What do you think? I'm really open for ideas , im especially open for helping hands :)

We can't tell you what to do with these covers. A link to our site would be nice.

I don't see how our covers are really necessary for your project at all honestly.

But eh do what you need I guess.

I agree with this. To be honest even with links provided, Id still prefer our covers dont be hosted anywhere by anyone.

im getting mixed messages here  ???

The purpose of the covers is when gamers are browsing, having a visual representation of a game (the covers) would be more visually appealing and not to mention easier to scan rather than textual titles.

Well then go ahead and scan your cover art.  Process it through paint or GIMP, make it look awesome yourself, and then host your cover.  We have spent many hours perfecting raw scans that people have contributed so that a perfect cover is available.  I say, if you want to make it easier to scan rather than add "Created by: Shenske" or "Created by: BadChad", then go somewhere else.

Even on our site here we acknowledge who made what cover.

Description: Custom Cover
Format: NTSC
Created by: Shenske
Region: United States
Case Type: DVD Case - Standard

That was extremely hard to add.  5 seconds compared to the 10 minutes it would take to get the cover (if that is you have it), scan it, fix it up (which the 10 minute time frame would not fit into fixing the scan up), upload it to a site, post the finished product.  Somehow :o, I think you are right!! That does sound a lot easier!

i don't know - seems to be damned if you ask, damned if you don't.

as far as i'm concerned once a cover is uploaded (mine included) it's public property - do what you want with it, but i'd prefer you weren't making profit from it.

Your gaming site doesn't really interest me, but anything that benefits the gaming community as a whole is a good thing IMO.

I think it's just common courtesy to ask for a permission to use something that's not mine, since the covers are actually public property, I will go ahead and use them, with the link back thecoverproject.com.

Thank you.

oh i agree whole heartedly and i wasn't getting at you - there have been a number of threads recently about people using covers without asking, and here you are, asking politely and with an exciting project ahead and people still get twitchy.  I guess if people don't want covers used then they shouldn't upload in the 1st place.  Not trying to be controversial here anyone, so please don't start getting emotional - just voicing an opinion.

I'm not telling him what he can or can't do, just saying that something like, say, mobygames might be a better resource for what he's doing. Hi-res covers would be an unnecessary strain on his servers. If he really wants to use our stuff, that's his problem really.

Thats what Im thinking. I dont really see the need to use our covers if your just using them for visual presentation. It would make more sense just to use simple cover art scans that can be found anywhere online, not to mention save on space aswell.
