I currently own six consoles and I'm running out of room on my TV stand. I think I can fit one more console, but I'm torn between getting an NES or Sega Genesis. I never owned either during my childhood because my mom had bought me an SNES and didn't think I needed more than one console. Friends and cousins owned them, so I did get chances to play them and liked them both.

So I know this is a difficult question, but which system has the most great games? The only NES games I've played are Dr. Mario and everything Super Mario All-Stars contains, and I've really only played the Sonic series on the Genesis. Games I'm most interested in are RPGs, platformers and puzzle games. I'm not big on fighting or racing games, but there are exceptions.

Get both, you can place Genesis on top of NES, or get Nomad instead of Genesis.

But if you only get 1, go for NES, I think it has more good games.
Genesis has does have one good RPG, Soleil, good Zelda clone with tiny twist.
But then on the other hand NES has several, and ofcourse the two originals (and some hacks).

Id go with a Genesis for what you are looking for in games. Landstalker is a great action/adventure/RPG its extremely similar to Alundra for PS1. (I think some of the same people worked on them both)

The Phantasy Star Series started out on Genesis too.

While you can get Final fantasy  and dragon warrior 1, 2, 3, 4 Zelda 1, 2 and im sure a couple more RPG games for Nintendo.... You might already have some of them in compilations or remakes, not to mention the high prices of Dragon warrior 2-4

I personally want to get the Shining Force series 1 & 2 on Genesis

As far as RPG Games there is probably close to an equal amount. But I would go with Genesis over NES for that type of game.

Im pretty sure the Genesis is also a bit cheaper to get too.
(you might need to replace the 72 pin connector on a NES if purchased from someone who doesn't deal with them)

I'd get a NES personally. But that's because I have "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" on PS3 (it's on XBOX360 and PSP too). It's not the same as playing with the original controller, but if all you want to do is play Genesis games than it's probably the cheapest way to play the most games (40 Genesis, plus a few arcade and master system games).

Actually a US citizen, but the US playstation id's look like crap :(

Sega Master System --> Sega Genesis

As a sega master system owner I'd say you're crazy if you're saying the SMS is better.

(besides there's the power base converter)

The Genesis is, on the whole, cheaper to collect for in my experience, especially in the wild. If we're just purely talking which has more great games, that's honestly extrmely close. I'd honestly say to try and get both. You can always make room for more consoles  :)

Sorry for the confusion, I was trying to point out that the Sega Master System was first, and then the Sega Genesis.  The Sega Master System = the NES of Sega.  So it's kind of hard to compare two different generation systems.  I love old games

If I HAD to pick, I would say NES. It doesnt get much more badass then the NES when it comes to videogames. But I love my Genesis too. I dont know what life would be like if I was never graced with games like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Shinobi trilogies. I would say you have to get both.

But before you do that you should go on an emulation spree and just downlaod anything and everyhting that looks like you might enjoy. I played ALOT of video games while I was still pretty young (dad bought me my NES at 3), but it wasnt till I was about 14 that I found out about emulation. I pretty much dug through everyhting for the NES, SNES and Genesis and found out about sooooo many good games I never even knew existed which greatly influenced me to start collecting.

I grew up with the Genesis, so I'm quite fond of that one. It's what started me on my Sonic spree.

I think I'm gonna try to get both and stack them on top of each other. I'll need to get another input box if I get both, in which case I could probably try to make even more room on my stand and get more consoles. But then I'd also need to buy another power strip because mine around about full. I need more than just three outlets in my room! Two of them aren't even anywhere near where my TV stand will fit.

A japanese Mega Drive for God's sake! :D

No, really. Mega Drive/Genesis for sure. No comparison. Sonic 3 & Knuckles? Alien Soldier? the Streets of Rage trilogy? all the great Sega/Disney games?
Still my favourite console ever.

take a look in the hardware section of wal-mart (or wherever you go), they should have some surge protectors with extra long cords.

i store my consoles in those plastic sweater boxes with cables and such. When i watch the Angry Video Game Nerd hooking up an Atari5200 with all those systems hooked-up at once, i scream "FIRE HAZZARD!" it freaks me out.
i hook mine up, play, when i want to switch, it goes back in it's box, onto the plastic etagere and then the other one gets hooked up. I even trained my son, who would want to play one system, then a different one, then...smack! one system at a time!
so, BOTH
(but Sega Genesis is my fave)

ummm ... how is it any more of a fire hazard than having a computer + monitor + printer + speakers all plugged in at once? It's not like anyone's saying to daisy chain power strips ... which is the only time it is ever really a fire hazard. It's actually better than plugging them strait into the wall so ... (I may not personally know too much on the mater, but my dad's never complained about it and he's a Fire Lieutenant over here).

On Topic: Choosing both is probably smart :P you can't really go wrong with either system, it just comes down to Nintendo games vs Sega games.

The only reason I would pick the NES over the Genesis is that (IMO) almost all of the good games on the Genesis have been re-released in some form that can be played on the Wii, 360 and PS3. The NES on the other hand has lots of games that have yet to see the light of day since the NES era ended.
