This has also been a long time concern of mine. I'm no graphics artist, and have simply made a few covers in paint, but I too would love to see Famicom covers. Customs are better than nothing!

Well as you know I mad that Famicom template I showed you a while back.  I ultimately decided to not make any covers as it would take forever to try and translate all the covers to Japanese and ALL would have to be customs.  If no one has a problem with that I guess i could give the template another go?

I like to comment that this is an awesome site and the many talented artist deserve high praise for there time and effort for customizing and uploading these beautiful covers.  I am a huge collector game console and games and I started collecting Famicom and Super Famicom games and most of them I was able to aquire them with the box and manuals, so as soon as I have a chance I would love to upload these covers and maybe one of "youse" guys can do something with them.  Here is my List for Famicom:
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Donkey Kong 3
Mario Bros.
Wrecking Crew
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Dragon Ball 1,2,3
Dragon Ball Z 1,2,3,4
Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star), 1,2,3,4
Dragon Quest 1,2,3,4
Golf
Tennis
and those are some, of the games I have with cover, I love for someone to works on these for me.  I will scan and uploads as soon as I have free time, being a bus driver and a father of two really takes up most of my time.

Rough Work In Progress

The style is heavily based off of the Famicom Mini series rereleases in Japan for the GBA.  I would explain more but I'm kind of in a hurry so i'll give you something to chew on.

for comparison box originally looked something like this

Absolutely perfect shenske. I actually have more Famicom games than NES, but with only one or two exceptions, they're all cart only. I'm really hoping people here will take a liking to the idea of Famicom covers.

I don't know what the general opinion regarding Japanese covers is, so I'll voice my opinion: when it comes to the back box description for custom covers for Japanese games, I feel it doesn't need to be written in Japanese. In fact, the majority of those who I know who collect Famicom games read little to no Japanese whatsoever. I can read Japanese somewhat, but still feel it makes more sense to use English as its the global language we all share.

Every custom Famicom cover I've made I've written the game description out in English. In some cases, the NES game description fits the Japanese Famicom version completely fine. There are many Famicom games that differ from their NES localizations of course, but there are many still that share everything in common with the NES versions except for number of pins. Therefore, what do you guys think of the idea of using select NES boxes in shenske's template in lieu of an extremely difficult to obtain Famicom box?

Whatever the case may be, I would just like to see the Famicom cover project finally become a reality. If requested, I can supply my English write ups for the backs of these Famicom games:

Balloon Fight
Binary Land
Boulder Dash
Challenger
Chase H.Q
Chuuka Taisen
City Connection
Clu Clu Land
Devil World
Famicom Wars
Ganbare Goemon 2
Hino Tori
Pooyan
Rockman 1-6
Sword Master
Star Wars (Namco)
Tetris (Bullet Proof Software)
Tetris (Tengen)

Great work Shenske! You never cease to amaze me with your skill. I have no use for and no interest in Famicom covers but I thought I'd leave a comment as your template turnded out pretty well :)

they're all cart only. I'm really hoping people here will take a liking to the idea of Famicom covers.
Could you possibly scan the carts then? At least its something to start with. I'll probably send it through vectormagic anyway.

So what is the common consensus with this? Should i use english text on the back of these? I would like to know everyone's opinion before i make too many famicom covers (or make a final template).

Yeah I can, I'd like to get the famicom questions and a few more covers squared away first.

For me personally, I like to have Japanese text if its a Japanese template, and English text if its an English template. Whether the game is Japanese or not doesn't matter.

So, for me, I would use Japanese text for Famicom games. If I had a Famicom game use the NES template, though, it'd be English.

Btw, love the template, and if I ever get a Famicom (which I plan to do), I'd definitely use it.

But shenske's famicom template is based on the NES one just with the styled early Famicom pulse line that was universally used in all early 1983-1985 Famicom titles. Maybe the best solution would be to do two versions of each. That way, everyone is happy.

Thats actually not even that big of a deal to do two languages considering i have to do an english write up first anyway.  Oh, i should clarify that both languages won't be present on the cover at the same time (I'm not going to fall into the same fait as pal covers ... all tiny text and a few pictures ... yuck).

I have a few more ideas that i think will benefit the template.  Before i get a concrete plan down i need to try it on a few covers to see how it looks with different games.

Also, i think with this template i'll make it similar to the vertical template i made for SNES and N64. Have set boundary boxes for screenshots, text boundaries, editable text etc. We will just have to see how it goes  :)

The template looks nice to me, but one thing really stood out to me; I think the drop shadow from the "frame", or whatever you'd call it, is way too prevalent. If there absolutely has to be something there I think it could stand to be a lot more subtle. I also think the box should say "Family Computer" and not "Famicom" as the latter never was an official name (outside the Sharp Twin Famicom, I suppose). I think it would look better, or at least more accurate - if you can use that word for a custom cover template - if it had the Family Computer logo on top, and the FF logo, complete with "Famicom Family" text on the bottom left or something. The basic layout looks great to me, though.

As far as the language thing goes, my personal view is that custom covers should always strive to look as official as possible. As such I balk at the idea of Japanese Famicom covers having English text. If someone wants "Japanese" covers with English text for their personal collection, that's perfectly fine with me, but it's not something I would ever want for myself, nor do I think it should be the default.

Realistically, I don't think TCP has a lot of Japanese or other non-English speaking "customers", but in principle I think we as a community should always make an effort to cater to as international an audience as possible. In addition there are also people like me who simply like to collect Japanese versions of games, and want everything in and on said games to be in Japanese. Simply put, I think it would be a terrible mistake to assume that English is always the norm, and what everyone wants.
