Back to NES Case Art... :-P
I have been working on this Great Waldo Search cover. I was whipping up one with some different source materials to use in place of any real scans that came in. It wouldn't have been "retail" but it would have been Hi-Resolution. OOBGARM has provided a scan from the box, but my goodness if it isn't difficult to work on this

Anyway.. Thought I would post some progress. I have almost completed the front.. I re-did the "Explosion" and all of the logos / seals. I tore the Waldo on the front to pieces and used updated elements to bring back a much more detailed "as intended" Waldo for this cover. His hair isn't the "Black/grey" messy blob that it is on the NES and Genesis covers.
Do I stay true to the ugliest of the retail, or update the elements with what I have? An example is Waldo's hair.. It's almost black on retail.. but you can tell the images I am using were part of the original, but either the hair color got changed to a darker for some reason..

Then the question is, what do I do about the back and spines? If you look at the front of this WIP, I took the HIGH resolution stuff I had and combined it with the scans OOBGARM provided to fill in the missing bits of the High Res image.. This worked ok in some parts, but others leaves me with a "LINE" or color difference/clarity on the figures. Does this look ok, or should I go back and do more work to try and clear up the images of those figures? It's pretty much all the people around the scroll and waldo that were taken OUT of the SCANS and placed on the HIGH RES pic I have of the book cover.
While making covers is something I like to do there is only so much time I have to give to it.. In fact, I don't even USE UGC's for my NES collection, so it's not really something I'd use myself!! I just have a really big love for NES games and the preservation of video games like these and I saw this community could use some more cover artists / collaborators to get the material produced. I also see the material created being used in the future for a lot of things (Bit Boxes) and other products, so it's awesome to see it used by folks. I don't see any cover I produce for this game (from the scans) to be good enough to post to the site, so that leaves me with a dilemma.. Finish what I started earlier and post the closest to retail version of my "Custom Cover" or take forever and a day to finish the real "Retail" cover and still not have it hosted on the site due to quality concerns..
Let me know what the community wants. I think I will go back to my earlier WIP and finish that out regardless.. It will be higher resolution (though not 100% retail) and will look closer to the books is all. I can re-use all the rear elements to finish out the "True" retail cover in the future if I dig up more time..
RETAIL SCANS - Thanks OOBGARM!
