Holy crap! Although Gimmick is vastly superior on the Famicom *then again, what wasn't?* I'm very pleased to see the PAL NES release to get a cover. What's next? Ufouria cover? Haha.

For anyone who hasn't heard of Gimmick, load up an emulator and play a stage or two. Be amazed by the audio and ghe fluidity of the graphics. Then go on ebay and import yourself this beast.

This game is Sunsoft's best game, bar none.  If you like Batman, Blaster Master or any of Sunsoft's other games, you shouldn't miss this one.

And... since Sunsoft had been risen from the dead to re-release Blaster Master on the Wii's Virtual Console, I hope they can thrive into uploading more, including those not available to North America.

I second this. The soundtrack in this game is definetly one of my all time favorites and the graphics are something else. I found out about this game a little over a year ago and it instantly became one of my favorites. This game is also quite a challenge. Good luck finding one on ebay tho. Ive yet to see a JAP copy on ebay. This is a tough game to find but is much cheaper than the PAL version.

Care to explain the differences?

What's next? Ufouria cover? Haha.

Actually if you look thru BadChad's covers there already is PAL and NTSC versions.

It's all about expansion audio.

Unlike the NES, the Famicom had no restrictions when it came to expansion audio, and many games have vastly superior audio on the Famicom as a result.

Sunsoft created Gimmick with the their own mapper and audio chip, the FME-7 which allowed for very smooth splitscreen and extremly high color depth. It also provided three extra sound channels, bringing the total available from four to seven.

The PAL release uses the MMC5, which has no ability for expansion audio.

So "only" audio and color difference, nothing game play wise.

Well yes. Gameplay wise, Gimmick like all NES versions of Famicom games are the same.

Here. Watch this and the other videos in this series. This video is a playthrough of the Japanese Gimmick with the with FME-7. There are plenty of notes to tell you EVERYTHING you could want to know about Gimmick and why it's such a fantastic game.

I also suggest you check this out. its a direct comparison of the audio in Akumajou Densetsu vs Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse. Densetsu used the Konami developed VRC6 chip for expanded audio, while Castlevania 3 used the Nintendo developed MMC5 that had no expansion audio capabilities.

Let me make clear that I'm not talking down the MMC5; its an incredibly advanced and brilliantly designed memory manager that let the NES do some amazing things. My only point is that in every case, the Famicom version is either the same or in the case of late Famicom games, vastly superior.

Yeah the difference noticeable in Castlevania 3 (haven't played my copy of Mr. Gimmick yet).

Damn now I want the Famicom games englishified on the original carts.  Grin

Not the case in Parasol Stars on NES:

After that video I realized that I have Euro version and now I want the US version too.

There is no NES NTSC version for Parasol Stars.  Your stuck with Pal unless you get a repro .  I'm not sure about a Famicon version fthough, if there is grab a gyromite with converter and go for it.

What I meant to say was that all Famicom and NES games share the same overall structure and gameplay. There were plenty of examples where there were minor differences in difficulty, audio, or even sprites.

Shatterhand/Solbrain is a good example of sprite changes and stripping the story.

OK, I  meant differences like Shatterhand/Solbrain or Rainbow Islands or Super Mario Bros 2/ Doki Doki Panic, meaning any bigger differences that warrant of buying the other version too.

Thanks for the scans. Consider it done.
