--- Quote from: satoshi_matrix on June 30, 2010, 03:46:02 AM ---It's all about expansion audio. Unlike the NES, the Famicom had no restrictions when it came to expansion audio, and many games have vastly superior audio on the Famicom as a result. Sunsoft created Gimmick with the their own mapper and audio chip, the FME-7 which allowed for very smooth splitscreen and extremly high color depth. It also provided three extra sound channels, bringing the total available from four to seven. The PAL release uses the MMC5, which has no ability for expansion audio. --- End quote --- So "only" audio and color difference, nothing game play wise. |

Well yes. Gameplay wise, Gimmick like all NES versions of Famicom games are the same. Here. Watch this and the other videos in this series. This video is a playthrough of the Japanese Gimmick with the with FME-7. There are plenty of notes to tell you EVERYTHING you could want to know about Gimmick and why it's such a fantastic game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYcf2yUgblc I also suggest you check this out. its a direct comparison of the audio in Akumajou Densetsu vs Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse. Densetsu used the Konami developed VRC6 chip for expanded audio, while Castlevania 3 used the Nintendo developed MMC5 that had no expansion audio capabilities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v9339JUK3U Let me make clear that I'm not talking down the MMC5; its an incredibly advanced and brilliantly designed memory manager that let the NES do some amazing things. My only point is that in every case, the Famicom version is either the same or in the case of late Famicom games, vastly superior. |

Yeah the difference noticeable in Castlevania 3 (haven't played my copy of Mr. Gimmick yet). Damn now I want the Famicom games englishified on the original carts. Grin Quote from: satoshi_matrix on June 30, 2010, 02:12:50 PM Well yes. Gameplay wise, Gimmick like all NES versions of Famicom games are the same. Not the case in Parasol Stars on NES: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mjHijG3Nag After that video I realized that I have Euro version and now I want the US version too. |

Your stuck with Pal unless you get a repro . I'm not sure about a Famicon version fthough, if there is grab a gyromite with converter and go for it. |
