I've started to work on my second cover! Jiepieh... It's Super R-Type and very destroyed.... *fg* Ahhhh that's how I like 'em!

Here's a picture:

I don't know what the person I've got this cover from did with the front. He must have been a real wacko!  ;D

Now to my question! Why do I have to split the cover in three parts then clean and resize them and then put them back together? Why can't I just work on the cover and leave it in one piece? Are there some special reasons I don't know or is it "local custom" ;) ?

Regards Sebastian

The dimensions of the front, "spine", and back of the box are not the same ratio as the cases, so if you were to size it so that the your overall scan matched the size of the cases, the spines wouldn't line up correctly.

Hmmmm.... Where's the difference between....

Splitting the picture in three parts and resizing them and then putting them back together
and
resizing the picture without splitting?

You always get an A/R(aspect ratio) error regardless of the way you resize it(splitted or not) because you have to change the number of pixels without constraining proportions....

Or am I getting something wrong?

Yeah .... but the original box spine is thinner in real life proportionally than the side of the universal game case. So when you resize the whole cover in one go the spine ends up intruding into the space for the front/back scans ... or vice versa ... cant remember exactly which but I know as I tried it once and had to redo it as a result  :-\

Ok....

My problem is that I have no cases to try my printings out.....  ;D

So I hope it's ok if I clean and repair the covers in one piece and then split it and resize it and put it back together... If not the work of 12 hours today was for nothing.... Or maybe not nothing but to learn more about photoshop!  :D

I suppose you could split them and resize them after the leanup as well.
Here is what happens if you don't split/resize. I took the raw image, resized it for the univerrsal game case, printed it out and tried it. The SNES scan is very close to correct.

Here are the results:

This is the spine, as you can see its not too bad, however, the super in super r-type rolls over to the front and appears cut off.

As you can see from the white line, the spine is almost 1/4" on the rear cover. (same on the front)
the white line (cover crease) should line up with the hinge.

Like I said, overall not too bad a fit, but the spine is about 1/2" too wide overall.

Hope this helps.

Good stuff wshbrngr .....

All that needs to be done is copy the individual pieces into seperate files ..... grab an existing N64 cover off this site .... then select and paste each piece into the appropriate front/back/spine area etc.

Sounds hard but is plain old easy eh wshbrngr In Paintshop Pro it's a breeze. Cant say for Photoshop as I dont use it ....

Hey guys!

Thanks a lot for your help!

I think I'll be able to finish R-Type today.... :) I at least hope so!

So after the cleanup I'll split and resize it.... Then put it back together and voila....

Super R-Type is finished....

I'll upload it as we speak....

One thing I'm asking myself is... Why are the filesizes of the jpegs so different?

There are N64/SNES covers with 10MB and with 4MB and my Super R-Type even has just 3,3MB...?
Just that you know I compressed the jpeg with maximum quality/biggest filesize!

Some of the covers are saved at 11 or 12 in Photoshop which balloons the image size without a real visible increase in quality. Your 3.3MB file should be adequate.

Hmmm.... That is the weird thing about it...

I'm using photoshop and the R-Type image for example was saved at 12....

Any idea why it's so tiny nonetheless? Is it maybe depending on how complex the colors are on the cover?

Printed and it fits in the case perfectly.
Everything appears to line up correctly and it looks very nice. :)
