TheGreatGonZo:

I have never used the program before and have a few questions .
Seeing that the templates on this site are in that format I would like try to mess around with making some covers myself .

Ok question 1 where and what level of software do I need? Is the entry level for 150 bucks  enough to make them? Here is a link to stapes website.

Question 2 is there a place i can buy a older version . I though of ebay buy i got screwed on buying software in the past (no key) .

Thanks !!!!

GIMP can open and edit them, but it doesn't support layer folders, so they end up being a giant nightmare to use. I'd read a few places that GIMP is supposed to get layer folders eventually but who knows when that is.

amazon has multiple versions available for various prices

what is the difference between photoshop and photoshop elements, are they both adaquet for custom cover jobs?

Jigsaw:

Elements is kind of a dumbed-down beginner/private consumer version of Photoshop which lacks a lot of features compared to its big brother. If you are a beginner though, it's unlikely that you would be able to tell the difference, and what Elements offers should be plenty if you're only looking to kind of get your feet wet with some simple covers. It'll get as advanced as you make it though -- I have used Photoshop for over 15 years so over time I've gotten used to doing a lot of things a certain way, and I've grown accustomed to having all the bells and whistles accessible, so personally I tend to feel like I've got my hands tied behind my back if I'm stuck with Elements (or Paint Shop Pro, or anything else that isn't what I'm used to...). But at its core it's still Photoshop, and like I said if you don't have prior experience or bias, you should be fine with Elements.

TheGreatGonZo:

I think I will buy it and give it a go . I just want to be able to make my own covers
so I can contribute SOMETHING  to the site so I don't feel like such a leach. ;D
I have a ton of games I know that there are no covers for on the site. so stay tuned....  8)
Thanks for the input.
