At work now, like two previous nights (after now four free nights).

Otherwise it has been quiet except as I was leaving for nightrounds about 45 minutes ago and stepped out from frontdoor of the building where our office is I was stopped by two policemen.

They asked who I was and let me go. They checked the list on the wall of people living in the house and were acting bit nervous. I was checking what they were doing while dusting snow off from our work car and de-icing the windshield.
No idea who they were after. ???

When I returned the police were gone but the lights of the building (more precisely the basement floor ones) auto-switched on without anyone being visible or heard so there might be someone hiding there but I'm safely in the office now behind locked doors.

So what happened next?

Nothing ended happening.

Did not see the police again.

Janitor in the morning did tell me however that the basement door had been wide open in the morning when he arrived... but this can be due someone going out for smoke and forgetting to check that the door has shut properly.
And judging from the snow on the floor it had been open least few hours, so it is possible someone had been hiding there.

About 10 years ago there was a police car chase in the St. Louis area that ended near where I worked at the time.  The suspect jumped out of the car and fled.  He ended up hiding in the parking garage in the basement of the building that I worked in.  The police notified the building that someone was hiding in it, so we went on "lock down."  "Lock down" didn't really mean much for us because our doors were always locked and you either needed a key card or had to call to get into our office.  But temporarily, no one was allowed in or out until the police found the guy.  After they started the lock down, the CFO grabbed me of all people (I guess because I was the youngest person working there) and he and I walked our entire office and checked every room and closet just to make sure he hadn't slipped in before the lock down.  The Police eventually found him.  He was not in our office, but it was still an interesting and eventful day.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

I dount I was in any danger.
At that time of night here most likely it was drunck driver or something.
I just checked as gossips here (town of 2700, and some of my coworkers being on the top tier in gossiping) fly around like flies around fresh pile of dung on hot summer's day... but nobody had heard anything even day later.

It's amazing what makes it in the local news and what doesn't.

Sometimes i see huge accident scenes by the side of the road where cars were clearly totaled and yet nothing about it in the news.  Very interesting indeed.
