PS1 Casing Recommendations

I'm looking to re-case my old Playstation 1 games, as many of my jewel cases are cracked and/or falling part.  For that reason, I'm really not wanting to put them back in flimsy jewel cases.

A few years back, I heard about "half height dvd cases".  They looked to be about the size of a Nintendo DS case, in height width and thickness.  I never could get hold of any.  I've been looking for them ever since, with no success.

I've also heard about 8-disc poly cases which also seem similar to a DS case, but WAY thicker.  Would be useful for multiple disc games.

Has anyone had any experience using the poly cases?  Half height DVD cases?  My big question is where did you acquire them?  I've found similar items, but I hate to bulk order 100 of them and wind up hating them because they're not quite what I was looking for.

OR if anyone has any better recommendations for PS1 games, I'd be interested in hearing them.  I'm trying to stay away from the tall DVD style cases.  Also looking for something CLEAR instead of colored, that way I can retain the internal artwork in the PS1 cases.

This won't make sense to you, but I 'make' my own cases if I found it loose.  I know full well that the person on the PS1 DVD Cover thread is going to call my a hypocrite, however...  I'm going from CD style to CD style [more of a 1 to 1] instead of CD to DVD.  Lots of wasted space and there is no easy way to make a PS1 cover in the style of a DVD case... unless you want something custom... and we are not TheCustomProject 





I... can't... help you at all on getting these plastic cases... as I got mine from where I worked; in which is now closed in my area due to Covid.  They are sleeveless and I add my own sleeves.  So again, I am no help =\  BUT I love them.  Absolutely love love love the cases.

What you should do is go to a salvation army / garage sales and ask for a wholesale price if possible (say you really just want the cases).  Never hurts to ask.

I am never going to replace 'good' cases with these plastic cases, as similar to the DVD cover thread, do you really want to store the original cases somewhere while always constantly creating / asking for new covers.  However, if you are completely Hell-bent on trying to find replacement covers, I would desperately try to find these cases (with sleeves).  They are compact and extremely similar to the original cases (making creating a variation cover stupid easy and accurate).

Hmm.  Upon re-reading my post, perhaps the word "re-case" is... wrong.

What you're doing is pretty much exactly what I was wanting to do.  Clear and square-ish cases, with remade artwork.  A set of interior clips to hold the manual.  I was looking for something a little thicker in the spine area (once again, similar to a DS case) so the game logo would be a little more visible.  But yeah, that's pretty much spot on.

I think just getting hold of the correct cases is going to be my greatest challenge.

I HIGHLY recommend just buying new jewel cases.  CD jewel cases are not fragile (compared to long box jewel cases).  I have hundreds upon hundreds of PS1 games and music CDs that are 20 years or older in their original cases.  Cracks and broken hinges are usually caused from abuse rather then from normal handling.  Replacement jewel cases are fairly cheap, and they can use the original artwork and manuals.  Unless your collection is really small, it's going to be a ton of work converting or creating artwork for different sized cases. 

It's been common for people to take the time to create new artwork for different cases for Sega CD and Sega Saturn games (usually DVD size).  This happened because those cases were truly fragile and up until recently, there was no easy way to get replacement cases, and even today, there is no cheap way to get replacement cases.  The libraries for those systems are fairly small as well, therefore, the work to convert everything into DVD was seen by many as time well spent.  However, since CD jewel case replacements are cheap and easy to find, there is no reason to use anything else.  Again, that's my opinion, but if you plan to own a sizable PS1 collection, you will thank me when you realize how much time and effort you are saving keeping them in jewel cases.

I uprooted a majority of my PS2 games and went with slimline cases ~14 years ago.  When I finally had the space to actually display all of those games, I either misplaced or threw out the covers (thus ultimately making those games loose).  I've hated myself ever since for doing so.  Keep the original artwork, people pay for it.  Because of that, I would say continue to use the original glasstic cases.  But if you find anything loose, I absolutely love the poly cases (thank you Nacho3 for the link!). 

As TDIRunner just mentioned, I wouldn't uproot your entire collection to a new medium, the continuous work every time you find a new game is a complete waste of time.  Longboxes (Sega CD/Saturn/some PS1)  are just a stupid joke on how fragile they are.  That's a different beast entirely.

Casing them in DVD styled cases... doing that is such a waste of space.  I would advise against it as we really don't make covers here for them (unless you find a collector who is also doing so that also wants to share those covers)

Be less defensive. Nothing wrong with making your own covers for any size or any reason. We all have our preferences and methods. There's no wrong way to go about this.

Oh no reason to be less defensive, I am just stating the facts that people really don't make DVD styled cases.  I have my own alterations of a case that I personally create the covers to.  So for me to sound like I am saying 'using a different medium is stupid instead of the original' isn't what I am saying at all.  I'm just saying that others won't really make you covers if it doesn't fit the greater good of the group here.  So if you decide to go with some new case, people will most likely not really help you out with making a cover for it.  Better time than ever to learn how to use Gimp / Photoshop
