My girlfriend got a new job and needs a laptop. She asked me to help find something for her.

She works in claims in health care. She needs the laptop for large volume data management, data mining, and data analysis. She works in excel a lot with huge spreadsheets. She'll need 32gb memory minimum.

She hates laptops, but needs one because we live in So Cal and the job is in the bay area and she will need to be onsite occasionally.

She prefers a larger screen. The max size of 17 inches would be nice, otherwise it's difficult to read. We already got two 24 inch monitors that she will attach with a universal docking station, but she wants the primary screen to be as large as possible as well. It's not a deal breaker though. She can work with 15.

She hates lenovo thinkpads because she can't rest her wrists in front of the keyboard. She has to peck at the keyboard and her hand gets cramped.

I asked her about her budget and she said that she would like to spend $600-800, maybe a thousand, and from what I've researched already, this doesn't seem realistic for her needs. She will need to spend more, which she is ok with, but she would love to get a deal (who wouldn't, right?).

Any advice? Any more information needed to give recommendations?

In before 'pics of girlfriend needed'..

She needs a powerful processor and enough raam to handle the massive volume of data in her spreadsheets. She picked up a pretty nice desktop last year and said that it was adequate but still slowed down compared to her work pc. This job is really important for her.

It's very close to where her daughter is going to school so she'll be able to visit her, the pay is substantially higher, and she was unhappy with her old boss for awhile and prayed for this.

She needs a good laptop that won't let her down. I was reading reviews on some options on Amazon and people were complaining that their laptop broke or failed shortly after the purchase and, in one example, HP refused to repair the laptop because the seller had upgraded a part inside, voiding the warranty, and Amazon refused to help.

If something like this were to happen to my girlfriend, it would be a total disaster. So I guess we need to get it from a reputable seller with a good warranty.

I'm going to look into the specs of her current desktop and will report back...

I think that this is the desktop I got her last year. I just checked the back and it says model- OP-DTW2-BK

She says that it's adequate, but slower than her work pc.

At the time, I figured that if it could handle gaming, it could handle her spreadsheets and when I told her the specs, she said that she thought it would work. Seemed like a good deal at the time.

I think she needs something at least this powerful for her new job but in laptop form.

Specs:
Intel i7-800 3.2ghz 6-core/12-thread processor
32gb ddr4 2400mhz desktop memory
512gb ssd + 2tb hdd
Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 8gb GDDR5X graphics card
Windows 10 home 64-bit

If she needs 32GB of RAM it's probably gonna be over $2000 and likely will be as slow as the desktop you got her. Those are pretty high specs (minus the graphics card) for a laptop.

Yeah, I told her that budget needs to come up if she wants the performance.

Thinking about something like this but it's not out until late November and she starts on the 8th.

She can either try to get by with her old weak laptop, get a desktop to keep near her work and do remote access to her pc here, or get q laptop that's available right now.

If this is a work Laptop, why is the office not buying it?

Work issued laptops tend to be overly restricted (limitations on apps you're allowed to download, sites you can access) and underpowered. It's easier for her to get the equipment herself to do the work she needs to do.

If they buy a laptop that can not meet the needs of the employee, then that IT department sucks and should be gutted.

I would benchmark the CPU before really doing anything honestly.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/
$1249.99 Laptop above : AMD Ryzen 7 4800H : Passmark score of 19389

If you can find something with a higher score for cheaper, I would say that's your best bet.  I would also invest in a warranty for it, as my Alienware has already kicked the bucket over 3 times from power consumption issues.
