Hey guys!

I wanted to take a moment and post about my latest pickup which is actually a really big milestone for me.  I picked up a copy of Chocobo's Dungeon 2 for the PS1.  And with that, I have now obtained every North American RPG released for the original Playstation.  Hopefully...

I have been trying to collect every PS1 rpg for about 10 years or so.  Admittedly I had a lot of them when they were new, but games got traded, sold, damaged, etc.  It wasn't until about 2010-ish that I really focused on amassing the entire set.  It started when I found a copy of Tactics Ogre in a closet at my parents' house.  I had completely forgotten about that game and realized I never finished it.  Going back to it made me nostalgic for Final Fantasy Tactics.  And then Final Fantasy 7.  Then Koudelka, Kartia, and others - but I realized a lot of the ones I had as a teenager I no longer owned.  So my hunt began.  I found some here and there, but I began to notice that some were really expensive.  I couldn't justify spending around $75 for Valkyrie Profile, no matter how much I missed the game.  So I kept my eyes peeled.  Looked in thrift stores, local game stores, eBay, etc looking to see if I could find it cheaper.  And I did.  I found a lot of them, maybe 30 or so, in the first 2 or 3 years, spending no more than $20 apiece.  There was the occasional splurge, like when I spent $100-ish on Tales of Destiny 1 and 2 in 2012, but I built up a respectable collection for not a lot of money.

Eventually I had collected all the ones I had nostalgia for or just wanted to play.  The last one was Vandal Hearts II.  After that I kind of threw up my arms and figured I might as well catch 'em all.  So I began to keep track of all the titles I could think of and made it a point to look for them regularly.  It was always awesome to find one cheap in a game store or garage sale.  It really got the adrenaline pumping.  I bought a few here and there off eBay, but I found that I didn't get much excitement from that.  No sport.  Some of these I was collecting just for the sake of collecting, and I didn't want to just throw market price at something I wasn't really going to use (to this day I still regret paying something like $25 for Saga Frontier 2 in 2012).  So I made a promise to myself to only buy these in the wild or if I found a low price buy it now on eBay, or winning with a low bid.  Basically, I didn't want to pay going rate for most of this stuff and was just fine waiting it out until I did find it cheap.  I had pretty much all the expensive ones by that point, so it didn't bother me if Alundra 2 went from $15 to $25 in a few years.  I'd still appreciate the hunt and not go into debt buying them all right away.  Technically I paid more for some games in 2015 than I would have in 2011, but that comes with collecting.  The longer you wait, the more likely it will cost more.

This did occasionally backfire as some games would unexpectedly shoot up in price.  The ONE game I didn't grab as prices began to raise that I still kick myself for is Shadow Tower.  That was a $20 game for years so I passed on it to spend my money on other games I thought might jump up at some point.  Then one day I look and it's close to $100.  And unlike other titles, i.e. Persona or Valkyrie Profile, that one never seemed to fluctuate over the years, only rise.  So when I found it for about $20 less than average I had to jump.

As I was getting close to the end of my list, a few years ago I was reviewing my list and someone pointed out I was missing some of the more obscure titles. It made me realize that my list might be missing more, so I looked to the internet to find a complete list of PS1 rpgs. Surprisingly, a definitive list was very hard.  Everyone has a different idea of what counts as an RPG.  Is Symphony of the Night an RPG?  Some say yes, others no.  It comes down to a personal preference, I guess, but I decided to be very liberal with my list and included anything that someone could argue would qualify.  I even made a post on TCP  asking for opinions and got some interesting answers.  Ultimately my final list may have games that some people don't think should be there (I'm still not 100% convinced the Mega Man Legends games belong on here, but whatever), but I'd rather have too many than be missing some.

Anyway.  If you read this far, thanks for listening.  This collecting goal meant a lot to me and it was definitely a long and bumpy ride.  Now that it's done I feel a strange combination of joy, relief, sadness, and emptiness.  What next?  Where do we go from here?  What else is there for me to collect?  Or maybe I should just sit down and PLAY these games.  I'm sure most of this is hitting me because I JUST received the final game today, and it is very possible all this will pass in a week or so.  For a decade I have had this goal anytime I walked into a store.  Now it isn't there anymore.  That it is definitely a weird feeling.

So to all of you who have your own lofty collection goals, good luck.  Your patience and perseverance will pay off.

TLDR:  I finally collected all of the PS1 RPGs either by finding them in the wild or paying under market value on the internet.

The final piece of the puzzle...

The entire set...
(sorry about the glare, with everyone home during the current pandemic the only place I could do this photo shoot was the attic, and the light is right above the door)

One last thing - all games are complete with case, manual, soundtracks or demo discs (if they came with them), and any other extras they may have originally came with.
Also, all are original black label, with no greatest hits discs, cases, or manuals.

Nice work, you may want to invest in some protectors for your Lunar games.
Retroprotection.com has some great options and even has the very rare 3DO protectors.

Currently my entire Working Designs collection is sitting pretty in their case protectors.

It helps that Dan (the owner) is a nice guy.

Awesome collection.  I still have a ways to go.

Since PS1 is my favorite console to collect for, several years ago I went through the entire library and put everything into categories (including RPGs).  Just for fun, I thought I would compare my list to yours.

These are the games that I classified as RPGs that weren't on your list.
Tail of the Sun
Warriors of Might & Magic
Yu-Go-Oh! Forbidden Memories

These are the games from your list that I classified under different categories (they have RPG elements, but I still put them in different categories)
Blood Omen
Castelvania SOTN
Tecmo's Deception
Diablo
Gauntlet Legends
Harvets Moon
Mega Man Legends
Mega Man Legends 2
Tron Bonne
Monster Rancher
Monster Rancher 2
Nectaris
Parasite Eve
Parasite Eve 2

Again, nothing wrong with the differences, I just thought it would be interesting to compare.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Oh wow this is incredible! I feel like the PS1 and the SNES are the two main consoles that come to mind when I think about RPG's, so this is incredible impressive.

So I gotta ask, what are some of your big recommendations? I grew up a huge Suikoden fan so those ones will forever be my favorite, and I've played the Final Fantasy's of course, as well as some miscellaneous ones like Legends of Dragoon and Chrono Cross. What are some must-play's/must-own's that you'd recommend?

Yeah I agree (maybe?). In my book RPG= turn based battles. You press a button, your guy doesn't swing/ fire his weapon. You select to do that in a menu. If your dude swings/ fires his weapon every time you press a button, it's not an RPG. Simple as that. My definition anyway.

Thanks!  I am very familiar with his work as I have several console protectors, special edition protectors, etc.  The Working Designs cases are on my list for whenever I order again.

As for different lists/definitions of RPGs, I totally get it.  Everyone has their own working idea of what an RPG is.
My list started as JRPG stuff but ended up growing.  Is Mass Effect an RPG?  How about The Witcher?  I think most would say yes, but they're definitely not JRPG stuff.  They're that western action RPG style.  That's what led to games like Blood Omen, Castlevania, etc getting put on my list.  Like I said, I'm not out to publish a definitive list.  I just want to make sure I have it if someone can make a good argument for it.  So while I don't think the Mega Man games should count, there are some who have decent arguments, so I own them.  Actually I had those already anyway, but you get my point.

TDI had a good thought with his suggestions.  Luckily, I already own 2 of those 3.  The only one I didn't have is Might & Magic, and that is dirt cheap enough to where I just bought it for $9 off eBay (so  guess I own it now).   I don't think I ever would have counted Tail of the Sun as an RPG.  Then again, I didn't think I ever played it or knew anything about it.  It kinda sorta seems to fit in the action RPG category, so why not....probably not gonna retake the picture though.  That took a lot to carry all those upstairs, set them up, back downstairs, and back on the shelf.

Thanks!  That means a lot.

Recommendations?  Hmm.  Well, it kind of depends.  Just about anything by Squaresoft (FF, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, etc) is going to be worth your time.  Breath of Fire 3 and 4 are some of the best stories in JRPGS on the platform.  And, of course, Suikoden 2.

As for some more lesser known or underrated recommendations?

Grandia - I think most people know about this game, but it is solid.  One of the best on the system.  Very traditional RPG with your basic story elements, character development, and subplots.  But it does it really well, better than a lot of other more mainstream JRPGs.

Koudelka - this one is a horror RPG set in a gothic castle.  It's actually a kind of sort of prequel to the Shadow Hearts series.  It's a turn based RPG that has some strategy RPG elements.  I really love this one, although I am a big horror fan as well.  Has 3D models and bad voice acting a la Resident Evil.  It's good...but NOT worth the going price.  I don't know if this is one is in the playstation store, but if it is I would definitely go with that over a physical if you just want to play it.

Alundra - Stop me if you've heard this one...a blonde elf kid with a sword sets out to stop a big bad, solve puzzles, and save the world in a top down action RPG style adventure.  Did you like Link to the Past?  Then play Alundra.  It isn't a carbon copy, but it's got good game play, a great story, and still holds up pretty well.

Tactics Ogre - A personal favorite, this is a strategy RPG with an amazing story.  But this game can be hard as balls.  It isn't a grind fest per se, but you need to know what you're doing before going in to battles.  You can't just wing it - hence the strategy part of this game.  If you've played Final Fantasy Tactics then it's a very similar experience, although I would say Tactics Ogre is miles ahead of its FF counterpart.

Wild Arms 2 - The original Wild Arms has its fans.  I was never that into it to be honest.  But WA2 is a lot of fun.  I think the gameplay and story are much better than the first, the graphics have improved, and I think it's easier than the first one.  As for story, you don't need to play the first in order to enjoy this, and it's more than just typical save the world JRPG stuff.  Has a lot of great anime cut scenes as well.

Legend of Lagaia - BAD graphics.  GREAT story that doesn't take itself too seriously.  This combines fighting game elements with a turn based RPG.  Takes a little getting used to, but it works surprisingly well.  During fights you can input special moves to attack enemies.  It's actually pretty fun because you keep learning longer and longer special moves that do more devastating attacks.

Also, full disclosure, but I haven't actually played every PS1 RPG.  I've played MOST, and beaten maybe 1/3 of them.  So it's very possible something like Battle Hunter may turn out to be the best game the system has to offer (doubtful) but I can't be sure since I only put about an hour into it.

You have me on the hunt for Alundra now. Looks awesome. Is Alundra 2 any good as well?

PS1 games are shockingly expensive. I think that’s part of the reason I’ve never disected the library.

Alundra 2 isn't bad, per se.  But it is significantly different.  It's not a true sequel, stories aren't connected and it just carries the name, kind of like most Final Fantasy sequels.

Where the first game drew heavy influence from Link to the Past, Alundra 2 looks like it took A LOT from Final Fantasy 7, from the look of the game to its music.  But instead of turn based, it has action style combat.

Alundra 2 is a fine RPG for the PS1 and I had fun playing it.  Would I recommend it?  Sure, it's still pretty cheap these days and can be fun if you can put up with the FF7 style graphics.  But would I say it's a decent replacement for the first one?  Absolutely not.

Sadly, the first title has gone up in price the past few years.  I had no idea it was THIS expensive though.  it was around $45 a few years ago when I last looked.  It's crazy how fast some titles shoot up out of nowhere.

If you're looking for a PS1 RPG that is like Zelda, there's Monkey Hero.  It's definitely not as good as Alundra, but isn't bad in its own right and it is way cheaper.  Just be warned that Monkey Hero won't play in a PS2 (not sure about a PS3).

it's so beautiful  :'( I just recently got back into playing old school rpgs, especially PS1, PS2, and PSP. My wallet hates me right now.
