It’s actually better to avoid scanning things against the edges of the scanner. We prefer to have that “gray area” all the way around the scan. That guarantees that none of the cover is cut off. And it avoids any other abnormalities associated with the edges of scanners.

I know I just learned a couple of days ago how to scan without the gray area. I will be rescanning them as soon as I have some spare time.

Just popping in to say that I don't think you can use the Descreen option on anything past 600DPI.  We usually look for descreened scans so that the Moire pattern is limited.

I can up to 1200DPI.

What scanner is that?  My Epson Perfection only supports descreen up to 600dpi too

Canon Pixma MG 3550 printer/scanner, the cheapest I could find. 40 euros or so it was.
Canon's software (Canon IJ Scan Utility (or the ScanGear part of it especially)) is awesome.
